In this paper, we propose a robust design for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multiple-input single output non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. By considering channel uncertainties, the original robust design problem is formulated as a sum-rate maximization problem under a set of constraints. In particular, the uncertainties associated with reflected channels through IRS elements and direct channels are taken into account in the design and they are modelled as bounded errors. However, the original robust problem is not jointly convex in terms of beamformers at the base station and phase shifts of IRS elements. Therefore, we reformulate the original robust design as a reinforcement learning problem and develop an algorithm based on the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient agent (also known as TD3). In particular, the proposed algorithm solves the original problem by jointly designing the beamformers and the phase shifts, which is not possible with conventional optimization techniques. Numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness and evaluate the performance of the proposed robust design. In particular, the results demonstrate the competitive and promising capabilities of the proposed robust algorithm, which achieves significant gains in terms of robustness and system sum-rates over the baseline deep deterministic policy gradient agent. In addition, the algorithm has the ability to deal with fixed and dynamic channels, which gives deep reinforcement learning methods an edge over hand-crafted convex optimization-based algorithms. © 2023 CCBY.

This paper examines the use of a quantum electronics Josephson Traveling-Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA). The JTWPA presents distinctive features for amplifying quantum signals through the nonlinear Josephson junction, influenced by quantum effects at microwave energy scales. The study focuses on characterizing this quantum effects-based parametric amplification, offering perspectives in communication and information processing technologies. The results, obtained with the Advanced Design System (ADS) pathWave tool suggest promising applications of JTWPA, paving the way for significant advances in quantum electronics. Notably, the findings indicate that at a fixed frequency of 4 GHz and a constant pump current of 1.85 μA, the transmission efficiency of JTWPA decreases by 32% when exporting the design as layouts using the High-Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS). Consequently, optimization with ADS emerges as a crucial step to assess transmission and information processing before the physical implementation of the JTWPA design. © 2024 IEEE.

This study examined the viability of column method utilizing the immobilized zinc oxide-loaded activated carbon obtained from corncob (ZnO@CB) to treat the landfill leachate. Instrumental techniques like BET, FTIR, SEM–EDX, and XRD were applied for the characterization of the adsorbents. The break through curve (BTC) was evaluated by altering the flow rate, bed height, and initial concentration of NH3-N and COD. At 35 cm bed height with an initial level of 3264 mg-COD/L, the optimal adsorption capacity was observed to be 35.44 mg-COD/g. Meanwhile, the optimal NH3-N adsorption capacity was 4.81 mg-NH3-N/g at a flow @ 1 mL/min, with an initial concentration of 460 mg-NH3-N/L, and a bed height of 35 cm. Both NH3-N and COD adsorption exhibited a correlation coefficient higher than 0.98 as calculated by linear plots of bed depth service time (BDST) equations, indicating that the column structure model was appropriate. The results reveal that the performance of the adsorption process could be well predicted by artificial neural network (ANN) at 4, 7, and 1 neuron for input, middle, and output layers, with a mean absolute error of 0.0096 and 0.0093 for COD and NH3-N reduction, respectively. In the RF model, higher values of R2 (0.9876 for COD and 0.9874 for NH3-N) indicate the model accuracy. The regenerated adsorbent achieved 54.2% and 54.1% removal of COD and NH3-N and adsorbent usage was feasible for up to three cycles. Results of BDST, ANN, and RF models revealed that packed column with immobilized ZnO@CB adsorbent is an efficient method for treating landfill leachate, highlighting the potential of ZnO@CB for industrial applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

We approach the problem of designing an automated trading strategy that can consistently profit by adapting to changing market conditions. This challenge can be framed as a Nonstationary Continuum-Armed Bandit (NCAB) problem. To solve the NCAB problem, we propose PRBO, a novel trading algorithm that uses Bayesian optimization and a "bandit-over-bandit" framework to dynamically adjust strategy parameters in response to market conditions. We use Bristol Stock Exchange (BSE) to simulate financial markets containing heterogeneous populations of automated trading agents and compare PRBO with PRSH, a reference trading strategy that adapts strategy parameters through stochastic hill-climbing. Results show that PRBO generates significantly more profit than PRSH, despite having fewer hyperparameters to tune. The beamforming performance of the uniform circular array (UCA) in near-field wideband communication systems is investigated. Firstly, the unique beam squint effect in near-field wideband UCA systems is analyzed in both the distance and angular domains. It is demonstrated that the generated beams at different frequencies are focused at different locations, resulting in significant beamforming loss. To alleviate this unique beam squint effect and facilitate beamfocusing, an energy-efficient beamforming scheme based on the true-time delay (TTD) architecture is proposed. Specifically, the phase shifters (PSs) and the time delay of TTDs are designed based on the analytical formula for beamforming gain. Additionally, the minimum number of TTDs required to achieve a predetermined beamforming gain while minimizing energy consumption is quantified. Numerical results show that the proposed beamforming scheme effectively eliminates the near-field beam squint and outperforms the conventional schemes in terms of spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

Uplink control information (UCI) and discontinuous reception (DRX) play important roles for massive machine type communication (mMTC). Despite their standalone significance, a conspicuous gap exists in comprehensively exploring the synergy between UCI and DRX concerning both energy conservation and latency reduction for mMTC. In this letter, we propose a UCI-based clustered access and DRX management (UCADM) scheme that strikes a balance between these two critical performance metrics, reducing energy usage while preserving low latency in uplink-downlink interaction for mMTC. Specifically, we present a strictly feasible solution for the proposed UCADM scheme by using the spectral radius and the constraint projection, which can effectively solve DRX switching operations as indicated by scheduling information from UCI. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of our scheme. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

The health status assessment of industrial equipment is critical to fault prediction and health management technologies. To fully reflect system degradation and accurately predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of a system, the construction of multiple performance indicators is important. Thus, a new state-space model and RUL prediction method are proposed herein based on multiple indicators, considering the three correlation relationships among features and degradation indicators. First, according to the extracted and selected feature signals, various relationships such as the correlations among multiple features, multiple features and indicators, and multiple indicators are analyzed. Then an intuitive multi-indicator state-space model is established considering the three correlations and the identified degradation patterns. On this basis, three failure modes of the system are defined according to the multi-indicator complex correlation conditions, and the corresponding probability density function (pdf) of the system RUL is calculated. Finally, the PHM2012 Challenge and XJTU-SY datasets are used as examples for experimental verification. Compared with other prediction methods, the proposed method can intuitively reflect the correlation between features and indicators, to solve the problem caused by the hidden random correlation. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

The increasing penetration of inverter-based generation such as solar, wind and battery energy storage systems (BESS) has an impact on the fault currents in a microgrid. Also, if the microgrid is grid-connected or islanded affects the fault current. As such, it is important to conduct fault analysis of microgrids in grid-connected and islanded modes with different penetration levels of inverter-based generation sources to understand the impact of increasing levels of renewable energy on the fault currents. Different types of faults in a microgrid with inverter-based resources are simulated and the results are discussed and analyzed in this paper. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, the validation and performance testing of a control scheme for a single-phase single-stage transformerless grid-connected Photovoltaic (PV) inverter are presented using the Control-Hardware-in-the-Loop (C-HIL) implementation. The control scheme uses the DC-link voltage controller and grid current controller, and it is executed in a LAUNCHXL-F28379D development kit, providing a cost-effective solution compared to commercially available tools. In order to extract the maximum available power from the PV system under different conditions, two Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms, including the Perturb and Observe (PO) algorithm and incre-mental conductance method, are investigated and compared. The simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the studied control scheme. © 2022 IEEE.
