This paper reports record-setting performance for the ellipticcurve method of integer factorization: for example, 926.11 curves/second for ECM stage 1 with B1 = 8192 for 280-bit integers on a single PC. The state-of-the-art GMP-ECM software handles 124.71 curves/second for ECM stage 1 with B1 = 8192 for 280-bit integers using all four cores of a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600. The extra speed takes advantage of extra hardware, specifically two NVIDIA GTX 295 graphics cards, using a new ECM implementation introduced in this paper. Our implementation uses Edwards curves, relies on new parallel addition formulas, and is carefully tuned for the highly parallel GPU architecture. On a single GTX 295 the implementation performs 41.88 million modular multiplications per second for a general 280-bit modulus. GMP-ECM, using all four cores of a Q6600, performs 13.03 million modular multiplications per second. This paper also reports speeds on other graphics processors: for example, 2414 280-bit elliptic-curve scalar multiplications per second on an older NVIDIA 8800 GTS (G80), again for a general 280-bit modulus. For comparison, the CHES 2008 paper "Exploiting the Power of GPUs for Asymmetric Cryptography" reported 1412 elliptic-curve scalar multiplications per second on the same graphics processor despite having fewer bits in the scalar (224 instead of 280), fewer bits in the modulus (224 instead of 280), and a special modulus (2 224-296+1). © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2009.

Since its introduction half a century ago IT has become one of the most important infrastructure components of virtually any organisation. An important key area of qualitative research in information systems is interviewing decision makers. These interviews aim to disclose hidden structures within IT projects and usage to increase their efficiency and effectiveness. In this context, the definition and analysis of critical success factors for information technology projects are well established areas for qualitative research in information systems. The analysis of critical success factors is of special importance since the IT projects still suffer from high failures rates. Therefore it is an important research goal within information systems to better understand IT projects to improve their success rates. The interviews of critical success factors provide a good data basis to disclose hidden structures in this domain. Besides only quantitatively interpreting such interviews the analysis can be enriched by some qualitative methods to support quantitative analysis and may disclose formerly hidden structures within the data. Therefore the objective of the paper is to enrich the analysis of IT projects and evaluate rough sets based quantitative analysis techniques for symbolic data which are characteristic in the domain of critical success factors analysis. © 2009 Georg Peters, Simon Poon, M. By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are observed to become systematically more unbalanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large number of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. This is the first observation of an enhancement of events with such large dijet asymmetries, not observed in proton-proton collisions, which may point to an interpretation in terms of strong jet energy loss in a hot, dense medium.

Rough sets are applied to information tables containing imprecise values that are expressed in a normal possibility distribution. A method of weighted equivalence classes is proposed, where each equivalence class is accompanied by a possibilistic degree to which it is an actual one. By using a family of weighted equivalence classes, we derive lower and upper approximations. The lower and upper approximations coincide with ones obtained from methods of possible worlds. Therefore, the method of weighted equivalence classes is justified. When this method is applied to missing values interpreted possibilistically, it creates the same relation for indiscernibility as the method of Kryszkiewicz that gave an assumption for indiscernibility of missing values. Using weighted equivalence classes correctly derives a lower approximation from the viewpoint of possible worlds, although using a class of objects that is not an equivalence class does not always derive a lower approximation. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Concurrent transfer is a feasible solution to enhance the efficiency and reliability of data transmission. In this paper, we propose a new transmission control scheme, the concurrent multi-path transmission control scheme (CMTCS). Our CMTCS effectively minimizes the impact of packet reordering at the receiver under concurrent transfers. Experimental results show that with our proposed scheme, we reduce packet reordering delays under varying drop and delay conditions caused by the underlying network.

Blogs, Wikis, and Social Bookmark Tools have rapidly emerged on the Web. The reasons for their immediate success are that people are happy to share information, and that these tools provide an infrastructure for doing so without requiring any specific skills. At the moment, there exists no foundational research for these systems, and they provide only very simple structures for organising knowledge. Individual users create their own structures, but these can currently not be exploited for knowledge sharing. The objective of the seminar was to provide theoretical foundations for upcoming Web 2.0 applications and to investigate further applications that go beyond bookmark- and file-sharing. The main research question can be summarized as follows: How will current and emerging resource sharing systems support users to leverage more knowledge and power from the information they share on Web 2.0 applications? Research areas like Semantic Web, Machine Learning, information Retrieval, information Extraction, Social Network Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Library and information sciences, and Hypermedia Systems have been working for a while on these questions. In the workshop, researchers from these areas came together to assess the state of the art and to set up a road map describing the next steps towards the next generation of social software. © 2008 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings.
