We analyze how the total scattering cross-section (TSCS) and absorption cross-section (ACS) of a circular dielectric rod, illuminated with the E-polarized plane wave, is modified by a conformal graphene strip of arbitrary angular width and chemical potential. In the core of our treatment, there is a dual series equation where the unknown are the field angular Fourier harmonics. We subject this equation to the Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) that yields a Fredholm second kind matrix equation. Such a procedure guarantees the convergence of the obtained numerical results. We present the normalized TSCS and ACS versus the angular width of graphene strip and the frequency in the range from the statics to 1 THz. These plots convincingly demonstrate that the resonances on the lowest non-plasmon natural modes of the considered scatterer are still tunable due to the tunability of graphene's conductivity. © 2022 IEEE.

Envisioning Model-Based Performance engineering Frameworks

Our daily activities depend on complex software systems that must guarantee certain performance. Several approaches have been devised in the last decade to validate software systems against performance requirements. However, software designers still encounter problems in the interpretation of performance analysis results (e.g., mean values, probability distribution functions) and in the definition of design alternatives (e.g., to split a software component in two and redeploy one of them) aimed at fulfilling performance requirements. This paper describes a general model-based performance engineering framework to support designers in dealing with such problems aimed at enhancing the system. The framework relies on a formalization of the knowledge needed in order to characterize performance flaws and provide alternative system design. Such knowledge can be instantiated based on the techniques devised for interpreting performance analysis results and providing feedback to designers. Three techniques are considered in this paper for instantiating the framework and the main challenges to face during such process are pointed out and discussed.

Exploring the Impact of Random Distribution Choices on Particle Swarm Optimization: An Initial Analysis

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a robust stochastic optimization algorithm for solving complex and constrained optimization problems. This paper aims to systematically investigate the influence of diverse random number distributions on the learning parameters of PSO and evaluate the algorithm's sensitivity based on these parameters. To this end, several exhaustive numerical experiments were conducted on several test functions, including asymmetric Sphere, Easom, and Csendes. Initially, appropriate random distributions were identified for the learning parameters and proceeded to compare these distributions using all potential combinations. The sensitivity of PSO to these parameters was evaluated using the mean best score, the relative proximity of the best particle to the theoretical optimum, and the average objective function evaluations. The most significant contribution of this research lies in the insights derived from the experimental data. The discovery was that highly skewed and long-tailed distributions such as Chi, Chi-square, Lomax, and Exponential often underperform. On the other hand, distributions that are bounded proportionally to the problem domain consistently surpass the performance of the standard uniform distribution. These findings significantly enhance the understanding of PSO algorithms and provide valuable guidelines for their practical deployment.

The Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) paradigm is anticipated to be a cornerstone of the upcoming 6G networks. In order to optimize the use of wireless resources, 6G ISAC systems need to harness the communication data payload signals, which are inherently random, for both sensing and communication (S&C) purposes. This tutorial paper provides a comprehensive technical overview of the fundamental theory and signal processing methodologies for ISAC transmission with random communication signals. We begin by introducing the deterministic-random tradeoff (DRT) between S&C from an information-theoretic perspective, emphasizing the need for specialized signal processing techniques tailored to random ISAC signals. Building on this foundation, we review the core signal models and processing pipelines for communication-centric ISAC systems, and analyze the average squared auto-correlation function (ACF) of random ISAC signals, which serves as a fundamental performance metric for multi-target ranging tasks. Drawing insights from these theoretical results, we outline the design principles for the three key components of communication-centric ISAC systems: modulation schemes, constellation design, and pulse shaping filters. The goal is to either enhance sensing performance without compromising communication efficiency or to establish a scalable tradeoff between the two. We then extend our analysis from a single-antenna ISAC system to its multi-antenna counterpart, discussing recent advancements in multiinput multi-output (MIMO) precoding techniques specifically designed for random ISAC signals. We conclude by highlighting several open challenges and future research directions in the field of sensing with communication signals. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper considers the problem of image segmentation for medical images, in particular, cutaneous lesions. Given a digital image of a skin lesion, our goal is to compute the border curve separating the lesion from the image background. This problem can be formulated as an optimization problem, where the border curve is computed through data fitting from a set of points lying on the lesion boundary. Some recent papers have applied artificial intelligence techniques to tackle this issue. However, they usually focus on the polynomial case, ignoring the more powerful (but also more difficult) case of rational curves. In this paper, we address this problem with rational Bézier curves by applying functional networks, a powerful extension of the classical neural networks. A Graph-Theoretic Framework for Free-Parafermion Solvability

We show that a quantum spin system has an exact free-parafermion solution if its frustration graph is an oriented indifference graph. Further, we show that if the frustration graph of a model can be dipath oriented via switching operations, then the model is integrable in the sense that there is a family of commuting independent set charges. Additionally, we establish an efficient algorithm for deciding whether this is possible. Our characterisation extends that given for free-fermion solvability. In the era of global digitalization, digital innovation hubs have become essential, as they function as transforming forces. In this paper, we provide an analysis of the Montenegrin Academic Digital Innovation Hub by applying multi-criteria qualitative evaluation over several criteria: process flow of fully digitized operations of the Hub (with aspects of the innovation life-cycle, ethics, and security), resource management, strategic goals, and feasibility. The paper also proposes a model of comprehensive resource management via the perspective of smart specialization priorities of Montenegro. © 2023 IEEE.

With the advancement of information technology in the recent decades, digital and online services have become essential components of everyday life in Europe. Montenegro is no different in this regard. However, as digital literacy in the country is still in a developing phase in comparison with most countries of the EU, a higher portion of its citizens may rely on assistive technical communication. In this paper, we provide a case study on the assistive technical communication of Montenegrin eServices. The work addresses the sectors of online banking, healthcare services, higher education, national administrative services, and utilities. Our findings highlight the diversity in terms of implemented assistive technical communication, and distinguish usage contexts on the level of adequacy. Yet as the functionalities of Montenegrin eServices are expected to gradually expand in the upcoming years, assistive technical communication must aim to handle the higher extents of service complexity. © 2023 IEEE.

Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) plays a crucial role in enhancing human-computer interaction. Cross-Linguistic SER (CLSER) has been a challenging research problem due to significant variability in linguistic and acoustic features of different languages. In this study, we propose a novel approach HuMP-CAT, which combines HuBERT, MFCC, and prosodic characteristics. These features are fused using a cross-attention transformer (CAT) mechanism during feature extraction. Transfer learning is applied to gain from a source emotional speech dataset to the target corpus for emotion recognition. We use IEMOCAP as the source dataset to train the source model and evaluate the proposed method on seven datasets in five languages (e.g., English, German, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese). We show that, by fine-tuning the source model with a small portion of speech from the target datasets, HuMP-CAT achieves an average accuracy of 78.75% across the seven datasets, with notable performance of 88.69% on EMODB (German language) and 79.48% on EMOVO (Italian language).
