Immersive technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (XR), create realistic digital experiences by overlaying digital elements. This study aims to highlight the benefits of utilizing VR technology in education, particularly in universities and higher education institutions, by integrating VR with educational theories to create engaging and interactive learning experiences that enhance understanding and retention. This review includes a comprehensive analysis of 103 works, synthesizing existing literature to evaluate the suitability of various educational approaches and theories for implementation in VR-based educational applications. The findings emphasize VR's potential to transform learning by providing immersive experiences that bridge different domains and encourage engagement. By integrating learning theory into VR development, meaningful learning environments can be created, improving student understanding and retention across diverse learning settings. The study concludes that the combination of technology and educational theories provides a novel approach to motivate students and foster deep learning in VR laboratories. © 2024 The Authors

To guarantee the low-congestion performance and quality of service (QoS) requirements of multi-services in Mega Low Earth Orbit Constellation Networks (MLEOCN), this paper focuses on the comprehensive communication link model in MLEOCN, commencing from users to access satellites, relayed by relay satellites, and finally delivered to the gateway by feeder satellites. Aiming at the problems of high congestion and low throughput in traditional path planning algorithms, we innovatively propose a multi-objective optimization service-correlated path optimization algorithm based on stochastic hill climbing strategy (MSCPO-SHCS). The algorithm initially achieves the joint optimization of three metrics through regular mapping and judicious weighting. Subsequently, it assesses the interplane hop via geometric parameter theory analysis (GPTA), then decouples the large-scale mixed integer optimization problem into the integer optimization problem superimposed linear programming problem, and ultimately employs the stochastic hill climbing strategy (SHCS) for path intelligent optimization. Based on the path Gaussianity assumption, we theoretically prove and numerically verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm boosts the throughput and load balancing coefficient compared with the greedy strategy, service-uncorrelated, minimum hop count, and resource allocation optimization. Additionally, it decreases the hop count compared with the maximum throughput and maximum balancing coefficient and maintains the optimal overall performance. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

This study presents a novel approach for using sliding mode control (SMC) for uncertain nonlinear systems with external unknown disturbances. A nonsingular adaptive barrier function-based finite time control is developed to deal with such systems. In technical implementation, first a novel sliding surface is designed based on the Hurwitz condition, then, using the finite-time stability method, a novel nonsingular terminal sliding manifold is established and the barrier function is obtained, which can guarantee the sliding surface convergence to the origin in finite time. For functional and numerical validation, two examples of uncertain nonlinear systems are selected to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with the other representative approaches. © 2023, The Authors. Evaluation can be defined as a process of determining the significance of a research output. This is usually done by devising a well-structured study on this output using one or more evaluation measures in which a careful inspection is performed. This paper presents a review of evaluation techniques for Conversational Agents (CAs) and Natural Language Interfaces to Databases (NLIDBs). It then introduces the developed customized evaluation methodology for Conversation-Based Interface to Relational Databases (C-BIRDs). The evaluation methodology created has been divided into two groups of measures. The first is based on quantitative measures, including two measures: task success and dialogue length. The second group is based on a number of qualitative measures, including: prototype ease of use, naturalness of system responses, positive/negative emotion, appearance, text on screen, organization of information, and error message clarity. Then an elaboration is carried out on the devised methodology by adding a discussion and recommendations on the sample size, the experimental setup and the scaling in order to provide a comprehensive evaluation methodology for C-BIRDs. In conclusion the evaluation methodology created is better way for identifying the strengths and weaknesses of C-BIRDs in comparison to the usage of single measure evaluations. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Purpose: Software modelling and Model-Driven engineering (MDE) is traditionally studied from a technical perspective. However, one of the core motivations behind the use of software models is inherently human-centred. Models aim to enable practitioners to communicate about software designs, make software understandable, or make software easier to write through domain-specific modelling languages. Several recent studies challenge the idea that these aims can always be reached and indicate that human factors play a role in the success of MDE. However, there is an under-representation of research focusing on human factors in modelling. Methods: During a GI-Dagstuhl seminar, topics related to human factors in modelling were discussed by 26 expert participants from research and industry. Results: In breakout groups, five topics were covered in depth, namely modelling human aspects, factors of modeller experience, diversity and inclusion in MDE, collaboration and MDE, and teaching human-aware MDE. Conclusion: We summarise our insights gained during the discussions on the five topics. We formulate research goals, questions, and propositions that support directing future initiatives towards an MDE community that is aware of and supportive of human factors and values. © 2024, CC BY.

Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) is a combination of ethics associated with the usage of artificial intelligence aligned with the common and standard frameworks. This survey paper extensively discusses the global and national standards, applications of RAI, current technology and ongoing projects using RAI, and possible challenges in implementing and designing RAI in the industries and projects based on AI. Currently, ethical standards and implementation of RAI are decoupled which caters each industry to follow their own standards to use AI ethically. Many global firms and government organizations are taking necessary initiatives to design a common and standard framework. We provide an overview of the results on Hughes’ model for pedestrian movements available in the literature. The model consists of a nonlinear conservation law coupled with an eikonal equation. The main difficulty in developing a proper mathematical theory lies in the lack of regularity of the flux in the conservation law, which yields the possibility of non-classical shocks that are generated non-locally by the whole distribution of pedestrians. This is a possible reason behind the availability of existence results only on one-dimensional spatial domains, despite the model having a more natural setting in two spatial dimensions. After the first successful approaches to solving a regularised version of the model, researchers focused on the structure of the Riemann problem, which led to local-in-time existence results for Riemann-type data and paved the way for a WFT (Wave-Front Tracking) approach to the solution semigroup. In parallel, a DPA (Deterministic Particles Approximation) approach was developed in the spirit of follow-the-leader approximation results for scalar conservation laws. Beyond having proved to be powerful analytical tools, the WFT and the DPA approaches also led to interesting numerical results. However, only existence theorems on very specific classes of initial data (essentially ruling out non-classical shocks) have been available until very recently. A proper existence result using a DPA approach was proven not long ago in the case of a linear coupling with the density in the eikonal equation. Shortly after, a similar result was proven via a fixed point approach. We provide a detailed statement of the aforementioned results and sketch the main proofs. We also provide a brief overview of results that are related to Hughes’ model, such as the derivation of a dynamic version of the model via a mean-field game strategy, an alternative optimal control approach, and a localized version of the model. The recent decade has witnessed a surge of research in modelling and computing from two-way data (matrices) to multiway data (tensors). However, there is a drastic phase transition for most tensor optimization problems when the order of a tensor increases from two (a matrix) to three: Most tensor problems are NP-hard while that for matrices are easy. It triggers a question on where exactly the transition occurs. The paper aims to study this kind of question for the spectral norm and the nuclear norm. Although computing the spectral norm for a general ` × m × n tensor is NP-hard, we show that it can be computed in polynomial time if ` is fixed. This is the same for the nuclear norm. While these polynomial-time methods are not implementable in practice, we propose fully polynomial-time approximation schemes (FPTAS) for the spectral norm based on spherical grids and for the nuclear norm with further help of duality theory and semidefinite optimization. Numerical experiments on simulated data show that our FPTAS can compute these tensor norms for small ` ≤ 6 but large m, n ≥ 50. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that can compute the nuclear norm of general asymmetric tensors.
