The sports betting industry has experienced rapid growth, driven largely by technological advancements and the proliferation of online platforms. Machine learning (ML) has played a pivotal role in the transformation of this sector by enabling more accurate predictions, dynamic odds-setting, and enhanced risk management for both bookmakers and bettors. This systematic review explores various ML techniques, including support vector machines, random forests, and neural networks, as applied in different sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and cricket. These models utilize historical data, in-game statistics, and real-time information to optimize betting strategies and identify value bets, ultimately improving profitability. For bookmakers, ML facilitates dynamic odds adjustment and effective risk management, while bettors leverage data-driven insights to exploit market inefficiencies. This review also underscores the role of ML in fraud detection, where anomaly detection models are used to identify suspicious betting patterns. Despite these advancements, challenges such as data quality, real-time decision-making, and the inherent unpredictability of sports outcomes remain. Ethical concerns related to transparency and fairness are also of significant importance. Future research should focus on developing adaptive models that integrate multimodal data and manage risk in a manner akin to financial portfolios. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the current applications of ML in sports betting, and highlights both the potential and the limitations of these technologies. © 2024, CC BY.

The fifth generation (5G) of wireless communication technology has revolutionized the way we connect with each other;enabling faster data transfer rates, lower latency, and higher reliability. However, the demand for even more efficient and ubiquitous connectivity is ever-growing. As such, researchers have already been exploring the potential of the sixth generation (6G) of wireless communications. The 6G networks are expected to provide unprecedented connectivity and reliability. An important component of 6G networks is the use of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) that have the potential to extend the coverage of 6G networks to areas where connectivity with traditional terrestrial networks is not feasible or cost-effective. NTNs include technologies with low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, high-altitude platforms (HAPs), and unmanned aircraft systems (UASs). However, the deployment and management of NTNs face numerous technical and operational challenges, such as network planning, resource allocation (RA), and interference management. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities for optimizing the performance of NTNs. By leveraging AI techniques, such as machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and reinforcement learning (RL), network operators can enhance the efficiency, reliability, and security of NTNs in 6G wireless communications. This survey paper comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art research on AI-powered NTNs for 6G wireless communications. It covers key NTN technologies, AI techniques for network optimization, and recent advances in AI-powered NTNs, as well as challenges and opportunities for future research. The paper also discusses the potential impact of advancing AI on the development of 6G networks and beyond. The findings of this survey paper deliver valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers in the field of 6G networks and AI. © 2023, CC BY.

A Zonal Approach for Wide Area Temporary Voltage Quality Assessment in Smart Grid

Wide area voltage quality assessment represents one of the mandatory objectives for distribution system operators in development of advanced distribution management systems supporting smart grid requirements. This paper introduces a zonal approach for wide area temporary voltage quality evaluation in distribution network. The concept of temporary voltage quality evaluation and assessment is recommended to incentivize active/online management of voltage quality issues. Decision support system based on the simple deterministic rules is proposed for rating the voltage quality zones in distribution network and making recommendations to distribution system operator. Voltage RMS level, unbalance, and total harmonic distortion are considered as voltage quality indices representing the inputs in decision support system. Residential, commercial, and industrial load types are considered in setting the thresholds for voltage quality indices. The proposed zonal approach for division of distribution network in voltage quality zones is applied to the example of a typical European-type distribution network. The operation of decision support system is tested using the developed distribution smart grid model. The following simulation case studies are conducted: loads with low power factors, manual voltage regulation at MV/LV transformers, unbalanced loads, integration of solar power plant, and nonlinear loads. The obtained simulation results reveal the benefits of the proposed voltage quality assessment approach. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Research on laser-induced graphene (LIG) and LIG with silver nanoparticles loading (Ag-LIG) are increasing by the day as more of its potential are uncovered each day. With the LIG fabrication looking to increase further in the future, it will be useful to confirm and verify any changes in the quality of LIG when it is exposed to the ambient air. In normal laboratory conditions, researchers store samples in petri dishes or any other covered storage, but inevitably the air within the storage will still be in contact with the samples. In this study, we left LIG and Ag-LIG samples in a lidded petri dish after its fabrication and measured the interfacial capacitance of each sample using a standard three-electrode electrochemical setup with a potential range from 0 V to 0.4 V on different days. Results show that the interfacial capacitance of both LIG and Ag-LIG drops as it is left in the storage container longer after its fabrication, with Ag-LIG showing a greater decrease after 10 days compared to LIG. This indicates that the silver nanoparticles played an important part during the oxidation process, making Ag-LIG more sensitive to its environment during prolonged unuse. The findings from this study shows the potential usage of LIG and Ag-LIG as a low-cost single-use indicator for air exposure. © 2023 IEEE.

With the increasing importance of data privacy protection, various privacy-preserving machine learning methods have been proposed. In the clustering domain, various algorithms with a federated learning framework (i.e., federated clustering) have been actively studied and showed high clustering performance while preserving data privacy. However, most of the base clusterers (i.e., clustering algorithms) used in existing federated clustering algorithms need to specify the number of clusters in advance. These algorithms, therefore, are unable to deal with data whose distributions are unknown or continually changing. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a privacy-preserving continual federated clustering algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, an adaptive resonance theory-based clustering algorithm capable of continual learning is used as a base clusterer. Therefore, the proposed algorithm inherits the ability of continual learning. Experimental results with synthetic and real-world datasets show that the proposed algorithm has superior clustering performance to state-of-the-art federated clustering algorithms while realizing data privacy protection and continual learning ability. Conservation of historic and cultural heritage poses great challenges, as the causes threatening the integrity of structures are becoming more frequent, including inadequate maintenance, the occurrence of exceptional events (such as floods and fires), as well as the exposure to increasing levels of air pollution. Furthermore, even during normal operation and in controlled indoor environments, the conditions can become favourable for the colonisation and development of harmful agents. The fungal contamination and growth on indoor building materials can alter the surfaces and deteriorate the building elements. In the present work, a preliminary investigation is conducted aimed at analysing the critical conditions for the proliferation and growth of different fungal genera or species, on commonly encountered materials in historic buildings. The study is carried out considering the climatic conditions of two locations, typical of northern and southern Europe, respectively. Physicochemical and Statistical Characterization of Gas-Sensing Behaviors of Resonator Sensors with Carbonaceous Films Prepared by Rf-Sputtering of Aromatic and Hydrophilic Biomolecules

Quartz crystal resonators coated with gas-sorptive films were characterized by analyzing their structures and their organic gas-sorption behaviors, which were then studied using statistics and computational molecular simulations. The films had carbonaceous structures that were prepared by radio-frequency (rf) sputtering of aromatic biomolecules, such as cytosine and lignin. These films had been compared with the rf-sputtered films of hydrophilic biopolymer of lignin and gelatin. The composition and morphology of each film governed the organic gas-sorption characteristics of the resonator sensors used for organic gas-sensing. The cytosine film, which was nitrogen-rich and layered, had a moderate affinity for the larger molecules of normal alcohols and acetate esters. The cytosine film is repulsive to positively-charged moieties of adsorbates. In contrast, the agarose film, which was nitrogen-poor and columnar, had a high affinity for small adsorbates with short hydrocarbon chains. Molecular flexibility of the adsorbate played an important role in the gas-sorption ability of the agarose film. Molecular dynamics simulation clarified that the weakly dipolar adsorbate-aggregate were immiscible in the cytosine adsorbent-aggregate because the collision mixture was prone to be instable. In practice, the cytosine-sputtered film had a higher gas-sorption ability for weakly dipolar species that have the longer hydrocarbon chains. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we consider a single-server retrial queue with unreliable server and two-way communication. Inbound calls arrive according to a Poisson process. If the server is busy upon arrival, an incoming call joins the orbit and retries to occupy the server after some exponentially distributed time. Service durations of incoming calls follow the exponential distribution. In the idle time, the server makes outgoing calls. There are multiple types of outgoing calls in the system. We assume that durations of each type of outgoing calls follow a distinct exponential distribution. The server is subject to breakdowns with rates depending on the state of the server. If the breakdown occurs, the server undergoes a repair whose duration follows an exponential distribution. The aim of our research is to show that the scaled number of calls in the orbit follows a normal distribution under the condition that the retrial rate is low. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Distributed Task-Oriented Communication Networks with Multimodal Semantic Relay and Edge Intelligence

In this article, we present a novel framework, named distributed task-oriented communication networks (DTCN), based on recent advances in multimodal semantic transmission and edge intelligence. In DTCN, the multimodal knowledge of semantic relays and the adaptive adjustment capability of edge intelligence can be integrated to improve task performance. Specifically, we propose the key techniques in the framework, such as semantic alignment and complement, a semantic relay scheme for deep joint source-channel relay coding, and collaborative device-server optimization and inference. Furthermore, a multimodal classification task is used as an example to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed DTCN over existing methods. Numerical results validate that DTCN can significantly improve the accuracy of classification tasks, even in harsh communication scenarios (e.g., low signal-to-noise regime), thanks to multimodal semantic relay and edge intelligence. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.
