The ever-evolving Internet of Things (IoT) has ushered in a new era of intelligent manufacturing across multiple industries. However, the security and privacy of real-time data transmitted over the public channel of the industrial IoT (IIoT) remain formidable challenges. Existing lightweight protocols often omit one or more critical security features, such as anonymity and untraceability, and are susceptible to threats like desynchronization attacks. Additionally, they struggle to achieve an optimal balance between robust security and performance efficiency. To bridge these gaps, we introduce a new lightweight key agreement security scheme that guarantees secure access to the IIoT-enabled flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The strength of our scheme lies in its utilization of the authenticated encryption with associative data (AEAD) primitive, AEGIS, along with hash functions and physical unclonable functions, which secure the IIoT ecosystem. Additionally, our scheme offers flexibility in the form of the addition of new machines, password updates, and revocation in cases of theft or loss. A comprehensive security analysis demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed scheme in thwarting various attacks. The formal analysis, based on the Real-Or-Random (RoR) model, ensures session key indistinguishability, while the informal analysis highlights its resilience against known attacks. The comparative assessment demonstrate that the proposed scheme consistently outperforms the benchmark schemes across multiple dimensions, including security and functionality features, computational and communication overheads, and runtime efficiency. Specifically, the proposed scheme achieves peak performance enhancements of 77.55%, 44.73%, and 69.6% in computational overhead, runtime overhead, and communication overhead, respectively, underscoring its substantial performance advantages. © 2025 IEEE.

This research aimed to reveal the information process in the brain of the patients who suffered from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using the power spectra and timelag analysis in electroencephalogram (EEG). The patients with MCI have memory or thinking problems, and are at a great risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Ten patients with MCI and 13 healthy adults (non-MCI) were examined. The EEGs (122.88 seconds/subject) during a state of relaxation with the eyes closed, were analyzed using the Fourier analysis (power spectrum) and the timelag analysis. The results showed that the mean value of the power spectra in MCI was significantly higher than the mean value in non-MCI in the theta band. The mean value of the absolute timelag values (ATL) in MCI was significantly lower than the mean value in non-MCI in the frontal and left temporal areas. Our findings suggest that the features from EEG of MCI were abstracted in the theta band, and the propagation of information related to memory in brain would becoming fast in MCI. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Automotive Simulation is a potentially cost-effective strategy to identify and test corner case scenarios in automotive perception. Recent work has shown a significant shift in creating realistic synthetic data for road traffic scenarios using a video graphics engine. However, a gap exists in modeling realistic optical aberrations associated with cameras in automotive simulation. This paper builds on the concept from existing literature to model optical degradations in simulated environments using the Python-based ray-tracing library KrakenOS. As a novel pipeline, we degrade automotive fisheye simulation using an optical doublet with +/-2◦ Field of View(FOV), introducing realistic optical artifacts into two simulation images from SynWoodscape and Parallel Domain Woodscape. We evaluate KrakenOS by calculating the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), which averaged around 0.023 across the RGB light spectrum compared to Ansys Zemax OpticStudio, an industrial benchmark for optical design and simulation. Lastly, we measure the image sharpness of the degraded simulation using the ISO12233:2023 Slanted Edge Method and show how both qualitative and measured results indicate the extent of the spatial variation in image sharpness from the periphery to the center of the degradations. © 2025, CC BY.

The notation and environment in conceptual modelling transform developers' initial perception about a system to a concrete model. Any usability constraints that the notation and environment impose on the modeling process affect not only the quality of the model but also the quality of the final product. This paper presents a usability profile for designing conceptual modelling methods that integrate graphical notation and formal mathematical notation. The profile was proposed based on a survey conducted on an instance of such methods, which combines the Unified Modelling Language (UML) and Event-B. The instruments used in the survey were the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations (CD) framework and several criteria suggested by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The analysis was conducted using the grounded theory approach. Thirteen participants responded to the survey. The survey suggests that graphical formal modelling requires deep understanding of the notations involved, strong support from the environment, well-organised models and high spatial ability. © 2009 The authors and IOS Press.

In this paper we propose a smart repeater that consumes less energy and is suitable for driving global interconnections in nanometre technologies. When there is coupling between interconnects, the effective capacitance of a given wire is a function not only of the physical geometry, but also the relative switching pattern described by the bits on the wire in question (the victim) and the adjacent wires (aggressors). The drive strength of a traditional repeater is static, resulting in a spread of the propagation delay, with the repeater strength being essentially too much for every bit pattern other than the worst-case pattern. In the proposed SMART repeater, the drive strength is dynamically altered depending on the relative bit pattern, by partitioning it into a Main Driver and Assistant Driver. For a higher effective load capacitance both drivers switch, while for a lower effective capacitance the assistant driver is quiet. By disconnecting part of the repeater when it is not needed, the total load capacitance to the previous stage is reduced, resulting in reduced energy consumption for those instances. It is shown that the potential average saving in energy can be as much 15% with a 18% jitter reduction over a traditional repeater for typical global wire lengths in nanometre technologies. In face-to-face communication, talkers perceive various affects and emotions of other talkers as the eye-impressions such as highlight or dilated pupil. In the previous studies, focusing on the eye-impressions in social robots, various expression methods such as changing the LED color or blinking the LED were proposed and developed. However, it is difficult to generate the affective expressions with the highlight that has an optical reflection characteristic on the surface of the eyeball by using the LED. Therefore, in order to enhance the eye-impressions of social robots, it is expected to develop an expressible method with the affective highlight. In this study, we proposed an affective highlight to enhance the eye-impressions of social robots. This method introduces a virtual lighting in virtual space and can generate rich affective expressions by controlling various parameters of the virtual lighting such as brightness or colors. In addition, we developed a speech-driven pupil response system that applied the affective highlight to the pupil response interface which has been developed. This system can generate the affective expressions by the dilation of pupil response that is synchronized with the talker’s speech as well as the highlight expression with talker’s intentional input. The effectiveness of the developed system with the affective highlight was demonstrated by sensory evaluations. © 2022 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

This paper presents condition assessment of high voltage equipment and substation as health index. Major equipment of high voltage substation consists of circuit breaker, disconnecting switch, current transformer, voltage transformer and surge arrester. The condition of equipment is assessed by visual inspection and electrical test. The weighting and scoring method is applied throughout the process of health index calculation. The Analytic Hierarchy Process is used to calculate the weight for each criterion. The conditional score and its weight of each testing are used to calculate the weighting average score. Then, the obtained weighting average score is adjusted by visual inspection, maintenance completeness and failure rate of equipment. The adjusted average score of all equipment in a bay is integrated into bay health index and subsequently adjusted by age and operational stress of bay. Finally, the health index of fifteen substations can be determined. © 2019 IEEE.

In the realm of forensic science, precise identification of individuals holds paramount importance in both investigative procedures and legal proceedings. Hands and palms recognition has emerged as a valuable biometric modality within forensic applications, owing to the distinct and intricate features inherent to these anatomical regions. The elaborate patterns of veins, creases, and ridges present on palms and fingers serve as rich sources of biometric data, crucial for accurate identification purposes. Furthermore, given the frequent involvement of hands and palms in criminal activities such as theft and assault, their recognition becomes imperative for establishing links between suspects and crime scenes. However, developing robust recognition systems tailored for forensic applications poses notable challenges, including variations in hand poses, lighting conditions, and image quality. To address these hurdles, sophisticated deep learning techniques, notably transfer learning, have been employed. By harnessing pre-trained deep learning models namely NasNetLarge, NasNetMobile, and EfficientNet, initially trained on expansive datasets for general image recognition tasks, we can adapt these models to the specific task of hands and palms recognition in forensic contexts. Our findings reveal that all three models consistently achieved over 92% accuracy across all metrics evaluated, demonstrating their efficacy as strong contenders for the hands-and-palms recognition task. Notably, the EfficientNet model exhibited superior performance compared to its counterparts, boasting more than 95.8% accuracy, precision, F1-score and recall, along with more than 98.6% specificity and 99.4% AUC. © 2024 IOS Press.
