Indonesia is actively studying its shale resources' potential to be developed. In contrast to other countries that have succeeded in developing their shale resources, Indonesian shale potentials are generally located at an active tectonic margin and are of younger ages (Cenozoic Era). This condition raises questions about the sustainability of its mechanical properties and development technique. Following our previous research, this paper presents the results of rock mechanical tests on shale from North Sumatra and South Sumatra Basins. The shale samples were prepared and tested by a rigorous multi-stage triaxial procedure. Eight (8) plugs representing the Baong and Belumai Formations of the North Sumatra Basin and eight (8) plugs representing the Talangakar and Gumai Formations of the South Sumatra Basin were prepared in vertical (V), horizontal (H), and 45° inclined (I) orientation relative to bedding. The test stages can be broadly categorized as the hydrostatic stage, triaxial stage, failure stage, and sliding-re-sliding stage. All the tests were conducted at a maximum confining pressure of 30 MPa to compare the results with results of our previous study and results from U.S. Shales. The tested shale plugs possess higher porosity than U.S. Shales for a given clay + organic matter (OM) content. Regarding rock strength, the analyzed plugs show a correlation with clay + OM content and inter-granular porosity. For the elastic properties, Young's modulus shows a decrease with clay+ OM contents, unlike the Poisson Ratio, which does not offer a clear trend. Meanwhile, creep compliance clearly shows the inverse trend of Young's modulus. The anisotropy of elastic properties is demonstrated by sample orientation, where the horizontal sample is the stiffest, the vertical sample is the softest, and the inclined sample is in between. Generally, the mechanical properties of the plug samples from Baong, Belumai, Talangakar, and Gumai Formations coming from two tertiary basins

Sumatra Fault as product from tectonic events in Sumatra is the boundary between west and east blocks. Sumatra Fault reactivation could be generated several hazards, especially in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP). Morphology of Sumatra Fault dominated by hill pattern variations from hill shade form, which should be delineated. The hazard potential has been identified by fault fracture density method combine with geological map and earthquake map. This research used ASTER GDEM and Regional Geology Map as basic data. Lineament interpretation is carried out on drainage map, DEM, and structural geology map. Earthquake data refer by earthquake history occurred near Sumatra Fault and subduction zone in western of Sumatra Island. The earthquake from Sumatra Fault potentially triggers landslide and liquefaction around BBSNP area. There is three regions as having geological hazard potential by Sumatra Fault movement, namely earthquake, landslide and liquefaction. Landslide will be collapsed relatively to the south and affected the main road of BBSNP. Furthermore, in eastern part of Sumatra Fault has liquefaction potential in Semaka and Suoh districts.

Shear wave velocity (Vs30) is one of the local condition parameters often used to determine buildings’ vulnerability to potential damage if an earthquake occurs. This parameter is essential for planning and evaluation in infrastructure development. Tadulako University, which is repairing the building and the layout of the campus area after the September 28, 2018 earthquake, needs to consider the parameters of the shear wave. Measurements of the Vs30 value have been carried out at 20 points spread across Tadulako University using the microtremor method. The value of Vs30 is then estimated to determine the classification of the surface soil. The results obtained indicate that the variation in value is not too significant; it is between 424 m/s – 530 m/s. This value is included in the C class site and has very dense soil and soft rock soil profile classification. The highest value is in the southwest part, and the lowest value is in the northeast part.

The West Sumatra region is an earthquake-prone region with a high-intensity scale. One of the earthquakes occurred on September 28, 2009. The earthquake triggered a ground movement in the form of surface faults and liquefaction phenomena. Surface fault structures are challenging to detect due to tropical climatic conditions with high weathering and dense settlements. Several measurements of Ground Penetrating Radar are carried out to study the geological structure below the surface after an earthquake. The study was conducted around the city of Padang. Data processing is performed using MATGPR software. Based on the results of the GPR analysis, several subsurface structures were found due to the Padang earthquake that were continuously and detected up to the surface. Some subsurface structures detected by GPR are not continuous to the surface. There is a possible relationship between the phenomenon of surface faults and liquefaction.

Situating in a tropical climate, will be favourable for Indonesia and Malaysia to have an intensive weathering and a concentration of lateritic bauxite. The study area takes place in Kuantan, Pahang State, Malaysia and Landak area, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The study area has different type of parent rock, topography and drainage condition, which will also cause the different characteristics of alumina minerals in bauxite. One of the common form of alumina minerals is known as Gibbsite [Al(OH)3]. The objective of this research is to investigate the genesis of gibbsite from two different parent rocks. Samples were taken and collected from pitting, analyzed for Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 using XRF and XRD examination. The parent rock of bauxite in Kuantan is basalt, meanwhile, in Landak, ranges from granodiorite to andesite. Petrography and XRD analyses of Kuantan bauxite shows predominant gibbsite, with minor amount of geothite, hematite, kaolinite, illite, quartz and feldspar, while in Landak, mineralogically consists of variant amount of gibbsite, goethite, hematite, kaolinite, illite and quartz. In Kuantan, the amount of Al2O3 varies from 23.6% - 51.01%, nearly similar than that in Landak that varies from 31.35% - 55.03%. Gibbsite in Kuantan is assumed as a transformation of Ca-rich plagioclase and Ferromagnesian- silicate minerals, on the other hand, gibbsite in Landak was produced from direct weathering of primary Al- silicate minerals (Na- plagioclase and K-feldspar). From study, it can be inferred that gibbsite formed from a layer of silicates and will concentrated in finer clay as a weathering product. Moreover, the different types of parent rock will produce different types and amount of alumina minerals. The study will be beneficial to predict the existence of potential alumina minerals in lateritic bauxite. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The magnificence of Bali makes this city famous as the world paradise among travellers. Its natural beauty emerges from its landscape, condensed culture and the local community. In southern Bali, the tranquil sandy beaches and karst landscapes attract few tourists, whereas their well-preserved sites store appealing facets of geological phenomena, heritage and tourism which differ to other tourism spots in Bali. This study aims to promote geotourism of Nusa Dua and Nusa Penida in Southern Bali with regards to the geological aspect of carbonate development, bioclastic sedimentation, tidal and wave abrasion, karstification, the emergence of freshwater spring on the sandy beaches and the dissemination of vertebrate fossil in the underwater cave. geological observation is carried out to investigate karst and beaches morphologies, the geometry of reef carbonate and its karstification proce ss as well as the constituent of abundant white-sand sediments. The collected samples of sands and rocks from 4 sampling sites were analyzed using petrography analysis to identify the rock types and sand composition, while laser diffraction particle size is used to indicate the size distribution and how intense the winnowing process occurred. As a result, the existence of carbonate outcrops in Nusa Dua and Nusa Penida beaches is caused by tectonic uplift that elevates the pre-existing coral reef from shallow marine into the surface. In the surface, the reef carbonate underwent dissolution and karstification, which generated cave or other unique geometry. The discovery of vertebrate fossils in the underwater cave of the Stiva cave, Nusa Penida, reveals that this cave became a shelter for prehistoric human before it was inundated by seawater after the last maximum glaciation. Subsequently, reef carbonate growths perpetually to compensate the sea-level rise, uplifted again to surface and karstified until the present time. Indonesia and Malaysia are neighboring countries that situated in a tropical area and suitable for weathering, particularly favorable for lateritic deposit. One of laterite deposit is bauxite, where bauxite was formed as a chemical weathering product of metaluminous to peraluminous igneous rocks. The study area is located in the Kuantan area, Pahang State, Malaysia and West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, which has contrasting tectonic origin and serve a different parent rock of bauxite. This study aims to distinguish the geochemical characteristics of bauxite in West Kalimantan against bauxite in Pahang Province. Method used in this study consists of pitting examination, where samples were collected from surface to maximum 10 m intervals and vertically logged. Samples were analyzed petrographically, XRD and XRF in order to observe the mineralogical composition and chemical compound. Result shows that magmatism in Pahang is dominated by basalt with oxide concentration of Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 respectively ranges from 43.96 - 51.01%, 16.59 - 18.97%, 2.17 - 9.01% and 2.83 - 2.91%. In Indonesia, the parent rock of andesite and diorite (Al2O3 = 48.11 - 53.49%;Fe2O3 = 6.15 - 17.25%) shows higher amount of Al2O3 than that in granodiorit (Al2O3 = 30.10 - 48.68%). It can be inferred that andesite and diorite as bauxite's parent rock found in Kalimantan Barat generates abundant gibbsite and higher proportion of Al2O3 with lesser goethite and hematite (Fe2O3) relative to basalt as bauxite's parent rock in Pahang. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

New paradigm to understanding turbidite sediment in Banyumas basin

Banyumas basin is one of sedimentary basin in Central Java. Based on surface geological mapping we can found many turbidite sediment in this area. Turbidite sediment is a sedimentary rocks with certain sedimentary structure such as graded bedding, paralel lamination, cross lamination or wavy lamination. Turbidite sediment formed by turbidity current which is caused by the existing of a slope. Several depositional environment which is have a slope can be a candidate as depositional environment of turbidite sediment in Banyumas Basin. Previous researcher always refer it to submarine fan depositional environment, because it is believed that Banyumas is a deep marine in the past time. But in the recent research, we found a buried volcanic arc in the middle of Banyumas Basin, that means there are several volcano formed at the middle of sea in the past time. Turbidity current cause by the slope of volcano’s flank not the submarine slope. So the new paradigm to understanding the turbidite sediment in Banyumas Basin is Flysch and molasse turbidite sediment. Flysch is a turbidite sediment related to an orogenic process or the birth of a volcano, and molasse is a turbidite sediment related to reworked process of a volcano, such as weathering, erosion, transportation and then re-sedimentation.

Formation of Mount Loyang: Easternmost scoria cone of Slamet stratovolcano, Central Java, Indonesia

Scoria cones commonly occur in the lower flank of stratovolcano close to the populated area. This close spatial relationship increases hazardous risk of direct impact of volcanic activities to the people. Therefore, it is necessary to gain more understanding to the formation of scoria cone to better assess the volcanic hazards. We studied Mount Loyang, the furthest scoria cone of Slamet volcano, approximately 14 km from the recent active crater. Quarrying to this scoria cone enables us to observe the interior structure towards the surface as represented by its volcanic rocks sequence. The sequences include 61 layers of voluminous ash and lapilli deposits resembling simultaneous scoria cone formation which attributed with lava effusion on the lower part of the cone. Chemical compositions were gained through ICP-MS-AES analysis including major and 13 trace elements for 17 representative samples yields typical basaltic compositions of SiO2 46.1 to 50.7 wt.% and MgO 5.9 to 7.5 wt.%. Median grain size (MdΦ) and sortation coefficient (δΦ) of −0.4 to −1.85 and 1.025 to 2.35, respectively, suggested for Hawaiian to Strombolian eruption type. In detailed, initial stage composed of bomb rich (size range 10 to 30 cm) embedded in ash materials (Φ scale −2) typical of opening vent stage. Average grain size shows general coarsening upward trend (Φ scale −3 to −5) and suggest for increasing explosive eruptive style. In the late stage, pyroclastic surge deposit typical of phreatomagmatic eruptive style started occur implying for the transition from dry to wet environment. The external water influence might triggered more explosive eruptive style once there is new magma ascend to the surface. We suggest that such eruptive style through a scoria cone need to be integrated into the hazard assessment of a potentially active volcanic area such as that in Slamet volcano.
