It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

An experiment was performed for the observation of H emission induced in a cooled laser-induced atmospheric pressure gas plasma of He atoms in their metastable excited state. The strong H emission detected clearly established, to the exclusion of other well known major excitation processes, the exclusive contribution of the He-induced excitation (HIE) mechanism. The process is suggested to take place by means of energy transfer from the excited He atoms to the H atoms via Penning collision induced ionization involving electron exchange. The result further shows that this mechanism may also work for elements other than H and thereby strongly suggests the use of ambient He gas to broaden and complement the applications of standard laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

PuO2 and AmO2 solid solutions: (Pu, Am)O2 are one of the candidates of fuels in a sub-critical accelerator-driven system (ADS). To understand the fuel performance, the thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity and heat capacity are quite important. However, it is very hard to experimentally determine the physical properties of plutonium as well as americium compounds due to their handling-difficulties. Molecular dynamics (MD) would be a specific method to describe the physical properties of such materials. In the present study, we have investigated thermophysical properties of PuO2, AmO2, and their solid solutions in the temperature range from 300 to 2,500 K. The lattice parameter, compressibility, heat capacity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal conductivity were evaluated. A Morse-type potential function added to the Busing-Ida type potential was employed as the potential for interatomic interactions. The calculated lattice parameters of (Pu, Am)O2 obeyed Vegard's law, and the values increased with temperature. The heat capacities of (Pu, Am)O 2 were similar in any compositions. The thermal conductivities of (Pu, Am)O2 were lower than those of PuO2 and AmO 2, indicating that a point-defect scattering effect of phonons could be realized in the MD calculations. © 2008 Materials Research Society.

An in‐situ straining device has been developed, which enables one to apply a load of 240 N to a specimen in hot water at 561 K and a pressure of 8 MPa, simulating the environment in a boiling water reactor (BWR). The device is equipped with sapphire glass windows for a light path, that is, the device can be used for dynamic measurements of stress induced in the specimen using a synchrotron radiation facility. In‐situ stress measurements have been carried out at SPring‐8 (BL02B1) on a specimen prepared from SUS316L stainless steel. Inhomogeneity in stress distribution and time‐dependent changes in stress were successfully measured.

Heat Transfer Coefficient Measurement Study of Several Film Boiling Modes in Subcooled He II

This study was carried out for more detailed information about film boiling heat transfer in subcooled superfluid helium (He II). A number of film boiling modes were experimentally investigated in a wide range of the pressure from the atmospheric pressure down to the saturated vapor pressure. A thin stainless steel foil heater was used to cause film boiling and as a temperature sensor to measure the heater surface temperature. The results drawn from the heat transfer coefficient measurement give a support to the previous conclusion reached by visualization and pressure measurement studies that two film boiling modes appear in subcooled He II, that is the strongly subcooled film boiling mode and the weakly subcooled film boiling mode. It is, however, found that the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient on pressure was much different from those of conventional fluids. The heat transfer coefficient weakly decrease with the pressure in the weakly subcooled film boiling, and on the other hand it is almost independent of the pressure in the strongly film boiling. The peak of heat transfer coefficient appears at about 8 kPa in the transition region between the weakly subcooled and the noisy film boiling modes.

Film boiling modes in both subcooled and saturated superfluid helium (He II) were experimentally investigated. The visual observation and the transient pressure and temperature measurements were performed to extract some characteristics of each boiling mode. The classification of all four film boiling modes, strongly subcooled and weakly subcooled modes in subcooled He II (He IIp) and noisy and silent film boiling modes in saturated He II (He IIs), was drawn on the boiling mode map. It was found from the heater temperature measurement that the boiling heat transfer is enhanced in the weakly subcooled mode compared with in the strongly subcooled mode. In the weakly subcooled mode, the vapor behavior is much activated by the instability in vapor‐liquid interface. The boundary region between the strongly and the weakly subcooled modes becomes thick as the rise of He II temperature or the increase of the heat flux. The noisy film boiling does not occur at the pressure above 9 kPa, though it appears at the pressure above pλ. It is found that in the region adjacent to the lambda line He I film boiling mode occurs even in He II.

In a core disruptive accident (CDA) of a Fast Breeder Reactor, the post accident heat removal (PAHR) is crucial for the accident mitigation. The molten core material should be solidified in the sodium coolant in the reactor vessel. In the present experiment, molten material is injected into water to experimentally obtain fragments and the visualized information of the fragmentation. The distributed particle behaviour of the molten material jet is observed with high-speed video camera. The distributions of the fragmented droplet diameter from the molten material jet are evaluated by correcting the solidified particles. The experimental results of the mean fragmented droplet diameter are compared with the existing theories. Consequently, the fragmented droplet diameter is close to the value estimated based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Once the particle diameter of the fragmented molten,material could be known from a hydrodynamic model, it becomes possible to estimate the mass ratio of the molten particle to the total injected mass by combining an appropriate heat transfer model The mass ratio of the molten fragment to total mass of the melted mixed oxide fuel in sodium coolant estimated in the present study is very small. The result means that most of the molten mixed oxide fuel material injected into the sodium coolant can be cooled down under the solidified temperature, if the amount of the coolant is sufficient.
