Star formation rate (SFR) is a fundamental parameter for describing galaxies and inferring their evolutionary course. H II regions yield the best measure of instantaneous SFR in galaxies, although the derived SFR can have large uncertainties depending on tracers and assumptions. We present an SFR calibration for the entire molecular gas disk of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, based on our new high-sensitivity ALMA 100 GHz continuum data at 55 pc (= 0′′ . 8) resolution in combination with the HST Paα line data. In this calibration, we account for the spatial variations of dust extinction, electron temperature of H II regions, AGN contamination, and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) based on publicly available multi-wavelength data. Especially, given the extended nature and the possible non-negligible contribution to the total SFR, a careful consideration of DIG is essential. With a cross-calibration between two corrected ionized gas tracers (free-free continuum and Paα), the total SFR of the NGC 1068 disk is estimated to be 3.2 ± 0.5 M☉ yr−1, one-third of the SFR without accounting for DIG (9.1 ± 1.4 M☉ yr−1). We confirmed high SFR around the southern bar-end and the corotation radius, which is consistent with the previous SFR measurements. In addition, our total SFR exceeds the total SFR based on 8 µm dust emission by a factor of 1.5. We attribute this discrepancy to the differences in the young stars at different stages of evolution traced by each tracer and their respective timescales. This study provides an example to address the various uncertainties in conventional SFR measurements and their potential to lead to significant SFR miscalculations. © 2024, CC0.

Mathematics learning based on augmented reality: A relevant mathematics teaching content and enhanced student abilities

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the material delivering on learning should be more innovative. Now, the application of technology in learning process can be a solution, such as Augmented Reality (AR). AR technology was implemented in various way, one of which in education. This study aims to explore the integration of AR in mathematics learning and see the potential of the technology AR used, in terms of what abilities can be improved. The method used in this research is literature review. Data obtained from scientific journals, conference proceedings, and other related sources. The results showed that the mathematical materials used in the use of AR technology are geometry and integer operations. Then there are seven abilities identified to increase in mathematics learning based on augmented reality. So AR can be an alternative learning medium that can be used during this pandemic.

education is an important aspect so that success in education needs to be achieved by every single country in the world. Success in education can be seen from the results of assessments conducted on several subjects, one of them is mathematics. Based on PISA and TIMSS, Indonesian mathematics performance is still in the low rate. It means that many things need to be evaluated. This literature review examines students’ errors in answering mathematical problems. This is for teacher’s guidance in assessing student’s answers so that teachers can evaluate the existing learning. 10 articles from various accredited journals reviewed in this article. The results show that 15 students’ errors can be found in solving mathematical problems.

The Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MPK) cascade plays an important role in the intracellular signaling transduction pathway leading to resistance against phytopathogens produced by Fusarium graminearum. In the cascade, there are three prominent kinase protein groups involved, an MPK kinase kinase (MPKKK), MPK kinase (MPKK), and an MPK. Recognitions of pathogen-derived molecules in plants trigger rapid activation of some MPKs including MPK6 which are found in a wide variety of plant species, including in Arabidopsis thaliana. The structure of MPK6 contains kinase domain and common docking (CD) domain. CD domain is phosphorylated by interact with MPKK. Moreover, the MPKK which binds to MPK6 and its phosphorylation mechanism are still unknown, so as initial study is needed to investigate biochemical characterization by prepare MPK6 protein. In this research, mpk 6 was amplified by using a pair primer and subsequently was ligated into pET160/GW/D-TOPO vector which contained with sequence encoded 6xHistidine tag protein for protein purification assay. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Medaq api traditional ethnoscience study: Identification of chemical concept from indigenous knowledge of the Lombok people

The Medaq api tradition of the Lombok people, which is currently almost forgotten, has the value of local wisdom and is rich in sources of indigenous knowledge. The integration of this indigenous knowledge into chemistry learning activities has not been widely reported. One of the reasons is the difficulty of teachers in identifying chemical concepts from the community’s indigenous knowledge. Therefore, this study aims to identify chemical concepts derived from indigenous knowledge in the medaq api tradition of the Lombok people. Descriptive research on indigenous knowledge of the medaq api tradition was carried out in the North Lombok area. Interview, observation, and documentation techniques were used for data collection and then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the chemical concepts identified in the medaq api tradition include chemical reactions, thermochemistry, organic compounds, solution, and colloids. The results of this study will contribute to the development of school chemistry teaching materials and as an effort to preserve the medaq api tradition of the Lombok community.

The ability of reflective thinking is the ability to connect the knowledge which students get with the preseding knowledge, so there are conclusions to solve new problems. In order to motivate the students to solve the problems given, the researcher wants to associate the mathematical problems that are given to the students by associating something which which was the local context to them. This study describes the reflective thinking of students in solving triangular and rectangular mathematical problems. This study used a qualitative descriptive study with the students of class VIIIC at SMP Negeri 17 Pesawaran as a research subject consisting of 32 students which was taken by 5 students. The five subjects are all the students who fulfill all the reflective thinking indicators. The instrument used was a written test in the form of 4 description questions and in the interview's guidelines conducted on the 5 students. Based on the research, the results obtained the students reflective thinking description in solving the mathematical problems which were the three subjects who are able to think reflective in solving mathematical problems and two subjects are quite capable of reflective thinking in solving mathematical problems. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

As technology grows rapidly, education will always get the impact. Research to obtain an attractive way to teach and learn has been emerged due to application of technology. Digital game-based learning is one of many ways to teach in a fun way. Role playing game (RPG), as a part of digital game- based learning, can be implemented to be used in modern class. This study aims to explore how far RPG was developed to be implemented to aid teachers teaching mathematics. Data was obtained from scientific journal, proceeding article, books, and other related sources. The result shows that RPG can be used to provide motivational boost and attitude toward learning mathematics.

PISA 2018: Non-cognitive factors and school characteristics towards mathematics achievement in Indonesia

Researchers found that non-cognitive factors and the school of students can affect the academic achievement of students during the educational phase. The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between non-cognitive factors and school characteristics to mathematics achievement. Data used in this study were taken from 9262 students in 334 schools in Indonesia that participated in the programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018. At the student level, the non-cognitive aspects include life satisfaction, positive feelings, and negative feelings; while at the school level, the independent variables include school categories (public/private), distance considerations in the admission of new students, and school environment. Multilevel analyses showed that feelings of happiness and anxiety at the student level had positive relationship with mathematics achievement, and students attending public school (at the school level) were reported to have a better mathematics achievement.

Many factors affect students’ mathematics achievement. In addition to cognitive factors, many studies also highlight and show that non-cognitive factors of students and school resources become important factors in influencing students’ mathematical achievement. This study analyzed the relationship between students’ non-cognitive factors and school resources to mathematics achievement. The data were taken from 9,620 of the 338 schools in Indonesia involved in participating in the 2018 program for International Student Assessment (PISA). The results of the multilevel analysis found that the students’ happy feelings, the students’ cooperation and the students’ belief were a statistically significant relationship to mathematics achievement with all positive relationships. The low quality of educational materials and teaching staff in schools were statistically significant and negatively correlated with mathematics achievement. This study showed that the non-cognitive factors and low quality of teaching staff had an important role for students in achieving mathematics.

Hydrogel beads, composed of polymers, possess the ability to absorb substantial quantities of water simultaneously and gradually release it in dry conditions. In this work, hydrogel beads were synthesized using sodium alginate (S-Alg) and poly (acrylic acid) (P-Acc), either in the absence or presence of phosphate (PO₄ ³⁻) (S-Alg/P-Acc@PO₄ ³⁻) and carbonate (CO₃ ²⁻) anionic ions (S-Alg/P-Acc@CO₃ ²⁻). Subsequently, these beads were crosslinked with Ca²⁺ ions. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images demonstrated that the presence of anionic ions has an impact on the structure of the hydrogel beads and enhances porosity expansion while concurrently reducing the concentration of carboxyl (COOH) groups. The hydrogel beads exhibited a great swelling behavior, with S-Alg/P-Acc@CO₃ ²⁻ capable of absorbing up to 73.5 % of water in acidic conditions, but decreased under neutral and basic conditions. Soil water loss (SWL) experiments confirmed the ability of hydrogel beads to retain water in the soil. Additionally, observations of soil characteristics after a 14-day treatment revealed no significant difference in pH and C/N ratio (P-value <0.05). However, soil's available Fe and N–NO₃ ^- significantly reduced (P-value <0.05) while substantially promoting soil N–NH₄ ⁺, available phosphorus (P), cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic carbon (SOC), and exchangeable cation (Ca²⁺, K⁺ and Mg²⁺). The presence of hydroxyl (-OH) and –COOH groups was found to be crucial for enhancing soil properties. © 2024 The Authors
