Comparison of cationic surfactant and acid solution for remediation of actual 137Cs-contaminated soil from Fukushima prefecture

Remediation of 137Cs-contaminated soil caused by Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident is still challenging since cesium is strongly bound in the clay particle of soil. The application of soil washing is frequently considered in the soil remediation project due to its easy operation. However, the use of suitable washing agent for removing 137Cs is still needed to be explored. This study compared performance of benzyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide (BDAB) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) as washing agents in removing 137Cs from contaminated paddy soil of Fukushima Prefecture. 1llite was also used as model clay for investigation of cesium removal process by considering the typical clay of Fukushima soil. The research was conducted with simple soil washing method without any chemical treatment prior to the experiment of contaminant removal. To examine 137Cs removal, soil with grain size<75 µm was mixed with 9 and 50 mmol/L of washing agents. Experimental results showed that BDAB 9 mmol/L did not efficiently remove 137Cs from soil. After BDAB 50 mmol/L was used, removal efficiency was achieved by 12.09 ± 6.31%. Meanwhile, HCl was not effective washing agent in this study. These behaviors can arise from more complexity of the actual soil component than illite, in which cesium is relatively removable although using lower initial concentration. Afterward, our results may be used for further investigations of parameters affecting BDAB as a washing agent for radiocesium removal.

We present 870 µm polarimetric observations toward 61 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds, with ∼400 au (1′′) resolution using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We successfully detect dust polarization and outflow emission in 56 protostars, in 16 of them the polarization is likely produced by self-scattering. Self-scattering signatures are seen in several Class 0 sources, suggesting that grain growth appears to be significant in disks at earlier protostellar phases. For the rest of the protostars, the dust polarization traces the magnetic field, whose morphology can be approximately classified into three categories: standard-hourglass, rotated-hourglass (with its axis perpendicular to outflow), and spiral-like morphology. 40.0% (±3.0%) of the protostars exhibit a mean magnetic field direction approximately perpendicular to the outflow on several 102–103 au scales. However, in the remaining sample, this relative orientation appears to be random, probably due to the complex set of morphologies observed. Furthermore, we classify the protostars into three types based on the C17O (3–2) velocity envelope’s gradient: perpendicular to outflow, non-perpendicular to outflow, and unresolved gradient (1.0 km s−1 arcsec−1). In protostars with a velocity gradient perpendicular to outflow, the magnetic field lines are preferentially perpendicular to outflow, most of them exhibit a rotated hourglass morphology, suggesting that the magnetic field has been overwhelmed by gravity and angular momentum. Spiral-like magnetic fields are associated with envelopes having large velocity gradients, indicating that the rotation motions are strong enough to twist the field lines. All of the protostars with a standard-hourglass field morphology show no significant velocity gradient due to the strong magnetic braking. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Control of microswimmers by spiral nematic vortices: Transition from individual to collective motion and contraction, expansion, and stable circulation of bacterial swirls

Active systems composed of self-propelled units show fascinating transitions from Brownian-like dynamics to collective coherent motion. Swirling of swimming bacteria is a spectacular example. This study demonstrates that a nematic liquid crystal environment patterned as a spiral vortex controls individual-to-collective transition in bacterial swirls and defines whether they expand or shrink. In dilute dispersions, the bacteria swim along open spiral trajectories, following the preimposed molecular orientation. The trajectories are nonpolar. As their concentration exceeds some threshold, the bacteria condense into unipolar circular swirls resembling stable limit cycles. This collective circular motion is controlled by the spiral angle that defines the splay-to-bend ratio of the background director. Vortices with dominating splay shrink the swirls toward the center, while vortices with dominating bend expand them to the periphery. Spiraling vortices of 45∘ with splay-bend parity produce the most stable swirls. All the dynamic scenarios are explained by hydrodynamic interactions of bacteria mediated by the patterned passive nematic environment and by the coupling between the concentration and orientation. The acquired knowledge of how to control individual and collective motion of microswimmers by a nematic environment can help in the development of microscopic mechanical systems.

Tree growth synchrony serves as a valuable ecological indicator of forest resilience to climate stress and disturbances. However, our understanding of how increasing temperature affects tree growth synchrony during rapidly and slowly warming periods in ecosystems with varying climatic conditions remains limited. By using tree-ring data from temperate broadleaf (Fraxinus mandshurica, Phellodendron amurense, Quercus mongolica, and Juglans mandshurica) and Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) mixed forests in northeast China, we investigated the effects of climate change, particularly warming, on the growth synchrony of five dominant temperate tree species across contrasting warm-dry and cool-wet climate conditions. Results show that temperature over water availability was the primary factor driving the growth and growth synchrony of the five species. Growth synchrony was significantly higher in warm-dry than in cool-wet areas, primarily due to more uniform climate conditions and higher climate sensitivity in the former. Rapid warming from the 1960s to the 1990s significantly enhanced tree growth synchrony in both areas, followed by a marked reversal as temperatures exceeded a certain threshold or warming slowed down, particularly in the warm-dry area. The growth synchrony variation patterns of the five species were highly consistent over time, although broadleaves exhibited higher synchrony than conifers, suggesting potential risks to forest resilience and stability under future climate change scenarios. Growing season temperatures and non-growing season temperatures and precipitation had a stronger positive effect on tree growth in the cool-wet area compared to the warm-dry area. High relative humidity hindered growth in the cool-wet area but enhanced it in the warm-dry area. Overall, our study highlights that the diversity and sensitivity of climate-growth relationships directly determine spatiotemporal growth synchrony. The presence of genetically engineered food (GEF) products commonly called genetically changed organism products has the goal to overcome the world food crisis. However, the products being controversy about some countries. They argue that these GEF products can endanger the health of consumers. This paper aims to discuss are GEF products threat human health. GEF products are organisms have undergone genetic modification using DNA recombining or genetic engineering technology. Many foods are genetically chan ged whole foods or contain ingredients derived from gene modification technology. The basic principle of genetic engineering technology is to manipulate the composition of DNA or to insert new genes into the structure of the recipient’s DNA. It means that the scientists inserted genes into the recipient’s living creatures can come from other living things. They still nowadays see those threats as a small trace is not to worry about them. People assumed that GEF products into threats living things, especially human beings. Even though, it is excessive emotional worry according to a scientific point of view because the event is very unlikely occurred. It recognized that any product has certain weaknesses for its advantages. Hence, it suggested that it’s better to be careful with GEF products to be consumed.

One of the most poorly understood aspects of low-mass star formation is how multiple-star systems are formed. Here we present the results of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 observations toward a forming quadruple protostellar system, G206.93-16.61E2, in the Orion B molecular cloud. ALMA 1.3 mm continuum emission reveals four compact objects, of which two are Class I young stellar objects and the other two are likely in prestellar phase. The 1.3 mm continuum emission also shows three asymmetric ribbon-like structures that are connected to the four objects, with lengths ranging from ∼500 to ∼2200 au. By comparing our data with magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we suggest that these ribbons trace accretion flows and also function as gas bridges connecting the member protostars. Additionally, ALMA CO J = 2-1 line emission reveals a complicated molecular outflow associated with G206.93-16.61E2, with arc-like structures suggestive of an outflow cavity viewed pole-on. © 2023. The ability of reflective thinking is the ability to connect the knowledge which students get with the preseding knowledge, so there are conclusions to solve new problems. In order to motivate the students to solve the problems given, the researcher wants to associate the mathematical problems that are given to the students by associating something which which was the local context to them. This study describes the reflective thinking of students in solving triangular and rectangular mathematical problems. This study used a qualitative descriptive study with the students of class VIIIC at SMP Negeri 17 Pesawaran as a research subject consisting of 32 students which was taken by 5 students. The five subjects are all the students who fulfill all the reflective thinking indicators. The instrument used was a written test in the form of 4 description questions and in the interview's guidelines conducted on the 5 students. Based on the research, the results obtained the students reflective thinking description in solving the mathematical problems which were the three subjects who are able to think reflective in solving mathematical problems and two subjects are quite capable of reflective thinking in solving mathematical problems.

The slippery slope framework explains tax compliance along two main dimensions,trust in authorities and power of authorities,which influence taxpayers’compliance *** frequentist and Bayesian analyses,we investigated the framework’s assumptions on a sample of 2786 self-employed taxpayers from eleven post-communist and non-post-communist countries doing business in five economic *** using scenarios that experimentally manipulated trust and power,our results confirmed the framework’s assumptions regarding the attitudes of the self-employed taxpayers;trust and power fostered intended tax compliance and diminished tax evasion,trust boosted voluntary tax compliance,whereas power increased enforced tax ***,self-employed taxpayers from post-communist countries reported higher intended tax compliance and lower tax evasion than those from non-post-communist *** results offer tax authorities insights into how trust and power may contribute to obtaining and maintaining high tax compliance levels amid global economic challenges,downturns,and increasing tax compliance costs.

Filaments are believed to play a key role in high-mass star formation. We present a systematic study of the filaments and their hosting clumps in the G35 molecular complex using JCMT SCUBA-2 850 µm continuum data. We identified five clouds in the complex and 91 filaments within them, some of which form 10 hub-filament systems (HFSs), each with at least 3 hub-composing filaments. We also compiled a catalogue of 350 dense clumps, 183 of which are associated with the filaments. We investigated the physical properties of the filaments and clumps, such as mass, density, and size, and their relation to star formation. We find that the global mass-length trend of the filaments is consistent with a turbulent origin, while the hub-composing filaments of high line masses (ml > 230 M☉ pc−1) in HFSs deviate from this relation, possibly due to feedback from massive star formation. We also find that the most massive and densest clumps (R > 0.2 pc, M > 35 M☉, Σ > 0.05 g cm−2) are located in the filaments and in the hubs of HFS with the latter bearing a higher probability of occurrence of high-mass star-forming signatures, highlighting the preferential sites of HFSs for high-mass star formation. We do not find significant variation in the clump mass surface density across different evolutionary environments of the clouds, which may reflect the balance between mass accretion and stellar feedback.
