Studies of electronic effects in reduced dimensionality have become a frontier in nanoscience due to the exotic and highly tunable character of quantum phenomena. Recently, a new class of 2D ultrathin LnX2 metalloxenes composed of a triangular lattice of lanthanide ions (Ln) coupled with 2D-Xenes of silicene or germanene (X2) was introduced and studied with a particular focus on magnetic and transport properties. However, the electronic properties of metalloxenes and their effective functionalization remain mainly unexplored. Here, using a number of experimental and theoretical techniques, we trace the evolution of the electronic properties and magnetic ground state of metalloxenes triggered by external perturbations. We demonstrate that the band structure of LnX2 films can be uniquely modified by controlling the Xenes stacking, thickness, varying the rare-earth and host elements, and applying an external electric field. Our findings suggest new pathways to manipulate the electronic properties of 2D rare-earth magnets that can be adjusted for spintronics applications. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry

Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) offer a simple, single-step technique for creating periodic patterns on solids in an ambient air. Combined with metals like gold or silver, LIPSS enhances grating-assisted refractive index (RI) sensors using surface plasmon resonance (SPR). This study analyzes an SPR sensor in the Kretschmann configuration with a periodically modulated silver layer. The modulation is created by LIPSS formed on a titanium-coated glass prism using femtosecond laser pulses, followed by a silver coating. Reflection spectra for wavelengths λ = 600-1700 nm were calculated for various angles of incidence and RI values (1.33-1.4). Unlike a flat sensor with a single resonance, the LIPSS-based sensor shows multiple resonances (λ = 1000-1700 nm) due to modes on inner and outer interfaces. LIPSS reduces resonance spectral width by an order of magnitude, but also reduces sensitivity similarly, weakly affecting the Figure of Merit. The LIPSS-assisted sensor was also tested experimentally. © 2024 SPIE.

Altermagnets have emerged as a class of materials combining certain ferromagnetic properties with vanishing net magnetization. This combination is highly promising for spintronics, especially if a material can be brought to a nanoscale size. However, experimental studies of the 2D limit of altermagnets and evolution of their properties with thickness are lacking. Here, we study epitaxial films on silicon of the Weyl altermagnet GdAlSi ranging from more than a hundred unit cells to a single unit cell. The films are synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy and, expectedly, do not show any discernible net magnetic moments. Electron transport studies reveal a remarkable transformation of the electron state with the film thickness. Thick films exhibit negative longitudinal magnetoresistance associated with the chiral anomaly but do not demonstrate altermagnetic properties in electron transport due to symmetry restrictions. In ultrathin films, a spontaneous anomalous Hall effect manifests itself, indicating a non-relativistic spin splitting in the electronic structure. The transformation is associated with crystal symmetry breaking accompanying the 3D-to-2D crossover. The work highlights the role of dimensionality in altermagnetism and provides a platform for studies of altermagnets aiming at ultra-compact spintronics. © 2024, CC BY.

Monolayer Magnetic Metal with Scalable Conductivity

2D magnets have emerged as a class of materials highly promising for studies of quantum phenomena and applications in ultra-compact spintronics. Current research aims at design of 2D magnets with particular functional properties. A formidable challenge is to produce metallic monolayers: the material landscape of layered magnetic systems is strongly dominated by insulators;rare metallic magnets, such as Fe3GeTe2, become insulating as they approach the monolayer limit. Here, electron transport measurements demonstrate that the recently discovered 2D magnet GdAlSi – graphene-like AlSi layers coupled to layers of Gd atoms – remains metallic down to a single monolayer. Band structure analysis indicates the material to be an electride, which may stabilize the metallic state. Remarkably, the sheet conductance of 2D GdAlSi is proportional to the number of monolayers – a manifestation of scalable conductivity. This study addresses linear attacks on remote state estimation within the context of a constrained alarm rate. Smart sensors, which are equipped with local Kalman filters, transmit innovations instead of raw measurements through a wireless communication network. This transmission is vulnerable to malicious data interception and manipulation by attackers. The aim of this research is to identify the optimal attack strategy that degrades the system performance while adhering to stealthiness constraints. A notable innovation of this paper is the direct association of the attack's stealthiness with the alarm rate, diverging from traditional approaches that rely on the covariance of the innovation or the Kullback-Leibler divergence, which are conventional metrics that have been extensively explored in previous studies. Our findings reveal that the optimal attack strategy exhibits some structural characteristics in systems of low dimensions. The performance of the proposed attack strategy is demonstrated through numerical examples. © 2024 IEEE.

On improved model of solid porous fuel gasification in low-temperature gas generator for flying vehicle

An improved mathematical model of solid porous fuel gasification in a combined charge of a low-temperature gas generator has been developed. For taking into account the change in the molar mass of the gas, a differential equation has been added to the model for determining the density of the gas that arising from solid fuel as a result of the gasification process. This allows one to determine the amount of gasification products and to accurately calculate the molar mass of the gas mixture at each point of the gas generator at each time. Calculations carried out using the refined model have shown that taking into account the change in molar mass of the gas can lead to significant changes in some of the unknown functions, such as the gas velocity and density. At the same time, the velocity of the gasification wave propagation changes very insignificantly. Thus, taking into account the change in molar mass of the gas has little effect on the estimation of the maximum operating time of the propulsion system.

A novel computational method is proposed for studying the processes of solid fuel sublimation in a combined charge of a low-temperature gas generator. The method is based on the finite volume discretization and the SIMPLE algorithm and is implemented in the OpenFOAM software. The computational results are compared with those obtained by the previously developed finite-difference method, and the higher performance of the new model is revealed. Another advantage of the method is that it is more convenient for use, more flexible for certain modifications, and can be easily adapted for multidimensional problems.

Recently, highly regular thermochemical laser-induced periodic surface structures (TLIPSS) have become the subject of active studies. TLIPSS are formed in the interference maxima due to the local oxidation of the material irradiated with ultrashort laser pulses and are characterized by the elevation of the relief that forms parallel oxide protrusions. The gas surrounding is expected to affect the morphology and chemical composition of the resulting TLIPSS;however, such effects were rarely studied so far. Here we present the results of the TLIPSS fabrication on glass-supported Si-Ti bilayer films using an astigmatic Gaussian IR femtosecond beam both in air and a nitrogen-rich atmosphere. The formation of ordered TLIPSS with the period of ≈ 920 nm is observed at slow scanning speeds (∼1 μm/s) and low fluences in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere. Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of TiO2 (rutile) peaks, as well as bands centered at 280 cm-1 and 320 cm-1, which can be related to TiN in amorphous and polycrystalline phase. © 2021 SPIE.

A novel OpenFOAM solver for modelling thermo- and fluid dynamic processes in porous media

A novel computational model based on the finite volume method is proposed for studying processes in heat-evolutional porous media. The developed model is implemented in OpenFOAM software. The problem of one-dimensional time-dependent gas flow through a porous heat-releasing medium is considered for testing the model. The computational results are compared with those obtained by the previously developed numerical procedure based on the finite difference method, and it is found that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of previously developed one.

The paper is aimed at investigating the influence of porous fuel layering on the operating regimes and performance of a low-temperature gas generator for high-speed flying vehicles equipped with a ramjet engine. The gas generator consists of a propellant and a porous fuel arranged sequentially to generate hydrocarbon gases that cool the engine before burning in the combustion chamber. In this paper, using a novel numerical model, gasification of the multi-layer solid porous fuel consisting of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polyethylene (PE) is studied for various volume contents and relative arrangements of fuel parts. It is shown that during the gasification of the multi-layer fuels, several gasification waves can simultaneously occur in the gas generator. The operating time of the gas generator depends on the relative sizes and relative location of the PMMA and PE layers, and an increase in the number of layers leads to a decrease in the influence of their relative arrangement on the process. Thus, during the gasification of two-component multi-layer solid porous fuel, the composition of this fuel, i.e., the relative sizes of the layers and their relative arrangement, can be the control parameter that allows one to choose the desired characteristics of the gasification process. © 2024, The Authors.
