Recent developments in data science in general and machine learning in particular have transformed the way experts envision the future of surgery. Surgical Data Science (SDS) is a new research field that aims to improve the quality of interventional healthcare through the capture, organization, analysis and modeling of data. While an increasing number of data-driven approaches and clinical applications have been studied in the fields of radiological and clinical data science, translational success stories are still lacking in surgery. In this publication, we shed light on the underlying reasons and provide a roadmap for future advances in the field. Based on an international workshop involving leading researchers in the field of SDS, we review current practice, key achievements and initiatives as well as available standards and tools for a number of topics relevant to the field, namely (1) infrastructure for data acquisition, storage and access in the presence of regulatory constraints, (2) data annotation and sharing and (3) data analytics. We further complement this technical perspective with (4) a review of currently available SDS products and the translational progress from academia and (5) a roadmap for faster clinical translation and exploitation of the full potential of SDS, based on an international multi-round Delphi process. © 2020, CC BY.

Formation mechanism of conduction path in titanium dioxide with Ti-interstitials-doped: Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics

The formation mechanism of conduction path in the defected titanium dioxide with two Ti-interstitials is discussed in Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics. In the equilibrated structure, we find the aggregated O-ions where the electrons delocalized. Besides, a belt-like conduction path is produced as the formation of the Ti-Ti bonds at [010] direction. Our work provides the novel view to clarify the resistive switching mechanism in the resistive random access memory device.

BACKGROUND:pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening disease. In the intensive care unit (ICU), PJP is most frequently observed among patients with several conditions not related to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHODS:The primary objective of the present post-hoc analysis of a multicenter, multinational, retrospective study was to assess factors impacting prognosis in ICU patients with PJP through univariable and multivariable analyses. RESULTS:A total of 107 patients were included; 28 had proven PJP (26.2%), and 79 had presumptive PJP (73.8%). The overall 30-day mortality was 52.7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 42.1-62.2). In the multivariable analysis, metastatic solid tumor (hazard ratio [HR] 3.49; 95% CI 1.71-7.13, < 0.001) and chronic liver disease (HR 2.44; 95% CI 1.03-5.80, = 0.044) showed an independent association with 30-day mortality. The direction of effect remained consistent when center was added to the multivariable model as random effect. CONCLUSION:PJP mortality remains high in ICU patients. Conditions other than HIV infection are emerging not only as non-classical risk factors for PJP development, but also as important mortality predictors. A better understanding of the reasons underlying this evolving landscape could be crucial to improve PJP management and survival.

In this paper, we have developed an intuitive robot teaching method based on hand guided demonstration. A depth camera is used to recognize various hand gestures which are used as the commands to control the robot gripper. Support Vector Machine (SVM) technique is used to classify different hand gestures. By an inverse kinematics approach, the human hand and robot endpoint workspace mapping has been performed. A preliminary experiment has been carried out on the Baxter robot simulator to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Test results indicates that the proposed hand guided robot teaching is intuitive, natural and effective and is of great potential for applications in human robot interaction.

On the analytic solvability of a special boundary value problem for the nonlinear heat equation

In the article we develop an approach to the study of nonlinear problems of mathematical physics, proposed in A. F. Sidorov’s school of thought, and apply it to solving boundary value problems with degeneracy for the nonlinear heat (porous medium) equation. The essence of the approach is that the solution of problems is constructed in the form of multiple power series. The convergence of the constructed series is proved by the majorant method. It allows us to propose the existence and uniqueness theorem, which is analogous to the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem for the considered problem. A constructive scheme for finding the coefficients of the series is proposed. A special feature of the study is that the boundary condition is given on a moving closed manifold.

Solving a degenerate nonlinear parabolic equation with a specified source function by the boundary element method

A degenerate nonlinear parabolic-type equation with a specified source function is solved. Boundary value problems for various kinds of boundary conditions are considered. Solution algorithms based on the boundary element method are constructed. Some examples are discussed. The comparison of the obtained BEM solutions with known exact solutions gives good results.

Combustion characteristics of an SI engine fueled with biogas fuel

An experimental research of the effect of H2 substitution and CO2 dilution on CH4 combustion has been carried out on a spark ignition engine. The results show that H2 addition could improve BMEP, thermal efficiency, CO and THC emissions. NOX emissions increased for higher low heating value (LHV) of H2 than CH4. CO2 dilution could effective reduce NOX emission of H2-CH4 combustion. Although engine performance, thermal efficiency and exhaust get unacceptable under high fuel dilution ratio (F.D.R.) conditions, it could be solved by decreasing F.D.R. and/or increasing hydrogen substitution ratio (H.S.R.).

Experiments and simulations of the standing wave acoustic field produced by two transducers mounted in contraposition

Acoustic standing wave levitation transmission technique has been widely used in many research areas. In this work, two Langevin-type piezoelectric transducers’ output are assembled face to face at a certain angle. Each transducer’s output acts as both its radiator and another transducer’s reflector. The authors termed it as contraposition transducer array. Standing acoustic wave in the cavity between the radiator and the reflector is formed when optimizing the angle between the central lines of the two transducers, the distance of the cavity, and the phase differential of the generator being used to excite the two transducers. Accordingly, the object during the acoustic field can be levitated, moved and manipulated. Not only the standing acoustic field pressure is theoretically derived, but also its potential location is Ansys-programmed simulated and illustrated. As a result, the restrictions are detailed which are necessary to form the standing acoustic wave. The corresponding experiments are carried out to demonstrate the proposed method by the authors. Finally, the influences of geometrical parameters and exciting phase differential on the formed acoustic field are numerically simulated.
