Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biodegradable nanoscale film produced by microorganisms, which possesses great mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In this study, we produced foaming BC (FBC) utilizing foam medium with different concentrations of agar. In addition, carvacrol was loaded into the agar/FBC to establish active packaging material. Evaluation by characterization tests indicated that agar/FBC provided lower crystallinity (59.8%∼71.4%) and a high swelling ability (94.7%∼97.9%) compared to BC (92.2% and 96.1%). The 1.5% agar/FBC with carvacrol group exhibited the significantly highest antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, release measurements showed that greater agar addition contributed to higher protein and carvacrol release extents out of the film. Finally, a sea bass packaging test indicated that carvacrol with 1.5% agar/FBC presented a higher antimicrobial ability against Shewanella putrefaciens, great inhibition of lipid oxidation (67.5%), and a slower spoilage degree (49.8%) which suggested that agar/FBC with carvacrol has potential for active food packaging. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) is a unique medicinal fungus of the genus Cordyceps. It has high economic value due to various biological functions from the extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) it produces. The aim of this study was to establish a mycelium-immobilization system for EPS production in a bubble column system. First, EPS production was optimized by 90.2% (from 0.72 to 1.37 g/L) using response surface methodology under an alginate-immobilized mycelium system with 6 days of cultivation. The highest EPS production was obtained (5.3 g/L) in a flask system through elongation to 15 days of cultivation. EPS production subsequently further increased to 10.42 g/L utilizing a bubble column reactor. Furthermore, the system can be reused for at least three rounds. In the EPS characteristics analysis, the produced EPSs were mainly composed of glucose and galactose. They presented strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. In terms of antioxidant activity, respective the EPS concentration that caused 50% scavenging of DPPH and ABTS free radicals values (IC50) were 4.65 and 7.92 mg/mL. In summary, these findings should be helpful for establishing a suitable industrial fermentation system for C. militaris and can be studied in the food and medical industries in future work. © 2024 The Authors

IRS (insulin receptor substrate) is responsible for signal transduction of Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) for cell differentiation, proliferation, and anti-apoptosis. Centella asiatica (CA) contains triterpenes as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, macro and micronutrients. This study observed the effect of CA extract on the expression of IGF-1, IRS, and the linear growth of rotenone-induced zebrafish larvae. The zebrafish embryos were divided into five groups: control, Rotenone 12 ppb, Rotenone, and CA extract concentration 2.5, 5, and 10 μg/ml, respectively exposed from 2-hours post fertilization (hpf) until 3-days post-fertilization (dpf). The expression of IGF-1 and IRS were conducted at 9 dpf by immune-histochemistry whole-mount. The body length was measured at 3, 6, and 9 dpf using Image Raster software. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results showed that the administration of CA extract could increase the expression of IGF-1 and IRS in rotenone-induced zebrafish larvae. The measurement of body length showed that rotenone reduced the body length of larvae after 6 dpf, and 5 μg/mL of CA extract significantly increased the body length at 6 and 9 dpf. It can be concluded that CA extract increased the body length of zebrafish larvae through the increasing of IGF-1 and IRS signaling.

Forest fire, classified as a natural hazard or human-induced hazard, has negative impacts on humans. These negative impacts are including economic loss, health problems, transportation disruption and land degradation or even biodiversity loss. During 2015, forest fire had occurred at the Merang-Kepahyang peat forest that has a total area of about 69.837,00 ha. In order to set a rehabilitation plan for recovering the impact of forest fire, information on the total burnscar area and severity level is required. In this study, the total burnscar area and severity level is evaluated using a calculation on the Normalized Burning Ratio (NBR) Index. The calculation is based on the Near Infra Red (NIR) and Short Wave Infra Red (SWIR) of the satellite imageries from LANDSAT. The images of pre-and post-fire are used to evaluate the severity level, which is defined as a difference in NBR Index of pre- and post-fire. It is found that about 42.906,00 ha of the total area of Merang-Kepahyang peat area have been fired in 2015. These burned area are classified into four categories, i.e., unburned, low, extreme and moderate extreme. By overlying the spatial map of burning level with other thematic maps, it is expected that strategy for rehabilitation plan can be well developed.

Molecular docking is a bioinformatics tool used to study and analyze ligand-receptor interactions. Centella asiatica (CA) is known as an herbal medicine for many diseases. Madecassic acid, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and asiaticoside are compounded from CA potentially as antiaging and wound healing agents. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of CA for anti-aging and wound healing through molecular docking. The docking was carried out on proteins associated with the antioxidant, collagen degradation pathway, and inflammatory processes. The molecular docking study used Glide, ADME/T using QikProp, and binding free energy calculations employed Prime/MM-GBSA module and Schrodinger suite 2020-2. The molecular docking and MM-GBSA showed specific interactions and high affinity within the binding pocket of the ligand. The in silico ADME/T properties were predicted that the compounds may follow the criteria for oral and topical active drugs. The theoretical calculation derived from ADME/T and molecular docking provided in-depth information into the structural basis, specific bonding, and nonbonding interactions governing the inhibition of antioxidant, collagen degradation pathway, and inflammatory processes. Taken together, these findings provide a basis for the recommendation of compounds from CA as high-affinity ligands and drug candidates for anti-aging and wound healing.

The correlation between cobalamin deficiency and anemia has been studied extensively. However, the effect of cobalamin deficiency on cardiovascular conditions has not been fully understood yet. Our study was conducted to explore the possible cardiovascular function alteration in anemia condition after cobalamin restriction diet. Eighteen adult male Sprague-Dawley rat were randomly divided into three groups: (a) control group were fed with standard AIN-93M diet for 12 weeks (Co); (b) The 1st treatment group was fed with cobalamin restricted AIN-93M diet for 4 weeks (R4); and (c) The 2nd treatment group was fed with cobalamin restricted AIN-93M diet for 12 weeks (R12). The cobalamin restricted chow defined as the modification of the standard AIN-93M with omitting cobalamin and adding 5% pectin to each kilogram of chow. The level of cobalamin, hematocrit, hemoglobin, erythrocyte and BNP were measured before and after feeding procedure. Hematology parameters were measured with Sysmex hematology analyzers, while plasma cobalamin and BNP level were measured with ELISA kit provided by MyBiosource. Plasma cobalamin level decreased about 102.84 pg/ml in R4 group and 189.53 pg/ml in R12 group compared to their initial level. Meanwhile, it remained stable in control group. The hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythrocyte level decreased in the R4 group and R12 group, but only significant in the R12 group. The BNP plasma level increased in all groups but not statistically significant. The administration of cobalamin restricted chow in rats decreased plasma cobalamin level, resulting in hematological and cardiovascular parameter alteration.

Mullite-zirconia is a ceramic material that has mechanical properties values that are close with the jaw bone. Lately, various precursor characteristics were used to produce the mullite-zirconia as the starting material. However, the processing requires a higher temperature to achieve crystallization and densification of mullite-zirconia. In this study, mullite-zirconia was synthesized through solid sintering of 3Al2O3−2SiO2 xerogel and ZrO2 xerogel. Those xerogels were produced by the sol-gel method and characterized by particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscope. Subsequently, those xerogel were categorized into five batch composition (AlSi, Zr, 85AlSi/15Zr, 80AlSi/20Zr and 75AlSi/25Zr). These samples were then sintered at 1300 °C for 2 hours and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The result shows the acquired particle size of 3Al2O3−2SiO2 xerogel and ZrO2 xerogel are 355.7 nm and 414.3 nm respectively. The morphology of these samples are irregular, however, for ZrO2 xerogel, it has angular morphology in some particles. The XRD exposed AlSi turn into 100% mullite. Meanwhile, Zr produces 22% tetragonal zirconia and 78 % monoclinic zirconia. For 85AlSi/15Zr, it contains mullite and monoclinic zirconia with fraction amounts are 74.4 % and 25.6 % respectively. Subsequently, 80AlSi/20Zr shows the lower fraction amount of mullite crystallinity (71.5 %) along with increasing the amount of monoclinic zirconia (28.5%). Lastly, 75AlSi/25Zr shows the crystallinity of sillimanite, tridymite and monoclinic zirconia with the fraction amount are 57.3 %, 12.1%, 30.6 % respectively. We conclude the reduction in the number of zirconia is able to maintain the mullite crystal, however, along with the increase in zirconia, it inhibits the formation of the mullite structure due to Zr atom act as an inhibitor in substitution of Al with Si atom to form the mullite crystalline.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused the current pandemic of COVID-19 and is highly infectious with relatively high mortality risk. In this study, we reviewed and summarized miscellaneous COVID-19 cases from vulnerable groups, including children and those with comorbidity, reinfections, coinfections and vaccinated individuals, and rapid transmission cases to understand if there are any specific SARS-CoV-2 variants that infect those groups. We concluded that there were no specific variants associated with higher rates of infection within certain groups, rather, they may tend to infect any groups with any immunity levels, regardless of geographical boundaries. A high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection is mainly driven by the ability of viruses with genetic markers that have been associated with higher risks of transmission and immune escape in vulnerable groups. Disease severity is not only influenced by the virus, but also host conditions such as gender, age, comorbidity, and obesity. The likelihood of new emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants resulting from infections in vulnerable groups is high, thus monitoring viral genetic markers and mutations is crucial for outbreak preparedness.

Stunting is a growing problem caused by chronic inadequacy of nutrition intake and chronic inflammation, mainly during the first 1000 days of life. This study aims to evaluate the incidence of stunting in terms of non-exclusive breastfeeding, infectious diseases, and sanitation in Pujon subdistrict, Malang, East Java, Indonesia. This study was an observational analytic study with the case-control design carried out in 10th - 21st March 2020 in Pujon subdistrict, Malang district, East Java. This study involved 76 pairs of mothers and children age 24 - 59 months (39 cases and 37 control samples). Data were collected by questionnaire, while the statistical analysis used Chi-square test followed by the analysis of odds ratio (OR) with 95% CI. The results show that the risk factors for stunting in toddlers due to a non-exclusive history of breastfeeding (OR = 2.995), history of infectious diseases such as fever (OR = 3.059), Acute Respiratory Infection (OR = 4.452), diarrhea (OR = 7.083), and waste disposal facilities (OR = 4.000) sewage water disposal facilities (OR = 5.739). It can be concluded that non-exclusive breastfeeding, infection disease, and sanitation such as waste and sewage water disposal facilities are risk factors for stunting children aged 24 - 59 months in Pujon subdistrict, Malang, East Java, Indonesia.

Background: The influence of prenatal exposure to per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on birth size and offspring adiposity is unclear, especially for the newer, shorter-chained replacement PFAS. Methods: In the GUSTO multi-ethnic Singaporean mother-offspring cohort, 12 PFAS were measured in 783 cord plasma samples using ultra-performance-liquid chromatography-tandem-mass-spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS). Outcomes included offspring anthropometry, other indicators of body composition/metabolic health, and MRI-derived abdominal adiposity (subset) at birth and 6 years of age. PFAS were modeled individually, in categories of long-chain and short-chain PFAS, and as scores of three principal components (PC) derived using PC analysis (PC1, PC2, and PC3 reflect predominant exposure patterns to "very-long-PFAS", "long-PFAS", and "short-PFAS", respectively). Associations with outcomes were assessed using multivariable linear regressions, adjusted for important covariates such as maternal sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Results: Overall, cord PFAS levels showed either no or positive associations (mostly for long-chain PFAS) with birth weight, length and head circumference. In general, PFAS were associated with higher neonatal abdominal adiposity, driven by shorter-chain PFAS. Perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) was associated with higher volumes of superficial subcutaneous adipose tissue (sSAT) (3.75 [1.13, 6.37] mL per SD increase in PFAS) and internal adipose tissue (IAT) (1.39 [0.41, 2.38] mL).
