Enhancement of student critical thinking ability and environmental awareness through e-module based on SETS-Edutainment: A need analysis

A need analysis in this research were carried out to determine the use of teaching methods and materials in science learning used by teachers, difficulties in science teaching and learning activities and to measure critical thinking skills and environmental awareness of students in Balerejo District Junior High School. The method used in this research is quantitative by collecting, processing and concluding based on a survey using a questionnaire. The research subjects were science teachers and seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Balerejo, SMPN 2 Balerejo and SMPS Wisma-Wisnu located in the Balerejo sub-district with a total of 60 students in each school. Based on survey the teachers using handbook and worksheet with lecture method. Teaching difficulties experienced by teachers in the lack of appropriate media facilities and the ability to develop teaching materials in accordance with appropriate learning methods. Based on the test of critical thinking skills at the observation stage through HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) questions regarding environmental problems, it was found that about 80% did not understand the impact of environmental damage and had not maximally found real solutions that were useful for the surrounding environment in accordance with current developments and technology. Based on a need analysis, the environmental awareness of students in the Balerejo District Junior High School showed that 70% were not used to throwing garbage in its place, 85% did not know the benefits of planting trees around the riverbanks in Balerejo District and almost 90% did not know the cause of flooding in Balerejo District in 2019 ago. Empowerment of critical thinking can be done by teachers with learning that has the potential to empower critical thinking skills, such as using the SETS-Edutainment approach. Analytical study of sandwich structures using Euler–Bernoulli beam equation

This paper presents an analytical study of sandwich structures. In this study, the Euler–Bernoulli beam equation is solved analytically for a four-point bending problem. Appropriate initial and boundary conditions are specified to enclose the problem. In addition, the balance coefficient is calculated and the Rule of Mixtures is applied. The focus of this study is to determine the effective material properties and geometric features such as the moment of inertia of a sandwich beam. The effective parameters help in the development of a generic analytical correlation for complex sandwich structures from the perspective of four-point bending calculations. The main outcomes of these analytical calculations are the lateral displacements and longitudinal stresses for each particular material in the sandwich structure.

DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism that introduces a methyl group at the C5 position of cytosine. This reaction is catalyzed by DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and is essential for the regulation of gene transcription. The DNMT1 and DNMT3A or -3B family proteins are known targets for the inhibition of DNA hypermethylation in cancer cells. A selective non-nucleoside DNMT3A inhibitor that mimics S-adenosyl-l-methionine and deoxycytidine has been developed;however, its selectivity mechanism is unclear because the structure of the inhibitor–protein complex has not yet been determined. Therefore, we performed docking and molecular dynamics simulations to predict the structure of the complex formed by the association between DNMT3A and the selective inhibitor. Through our simulations, binding free energy decomposition analysis, structural isoform comparison, and residue scanning revealed that Arg688 of DNMT3A is involved in the interaction with this inhibitor, as seen by its significant contribution to the binding free energy. The presence of Asn1192 at the corresponding residues in DNMT1 results in a loss of affinity for the inhibitor, suggesting that the interactions mediated by Arg688 in DNMT3A are essential for selectivity. Our study findings can be applied in the design of DNMT-selective inhibitors and methylation-specific drug optimization procedures. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Land use change is a phenomenon that needs special attention, especially concerning the planning and development of a region. Agricultural land is the most vulnerable form of land use to change. Agricultural land was transformed or converted into other forms of land use for the industrial zone. Changes in agricultural land occur in various regions even in areas known for their rice productions, namely Karawang Regency. Information about changes or conversion of agricultural land, especially information with spatial references, is very important and needs to be kept up to date. This information is very useful as input in regional development planning. This study aims to map and analyze changes in agricultural lands in Karawang Regency. The study period was between 2014 and 2020. The method used was a combination of remote sensing image interpretation and spatial analysis. Interpretation of imagery was done using multispectral classification methods called maximum likelihood. The results showed that during the 2014-2020 period, agricultural land in Karawang Regency decreased by 27,659.57 hectares.

Microplastic in Gonggong snails (Laevistrombus turturella) and sediment of Bintan Island, Kepulauan Riau Province, Indonesia

Microplastics (1 um - 5 mm) had been pollutants in marine habitat and can be consumed by fauna. This study aims to determine the number of microplastic particles found in sediments and Gonggong snails Laevistrombus turturella in four station at coastal areas of Bintan Island. Ten snails were taken, and its sediment collected at a depth of 1-2 cm from the surface as much as ± 250 gr. The tissue of gonggong snails were destructed on HNO3 for 24 hours and diluted 10 times with 50% NaCl solution before observed under a light microscope. Our findings at four stations showed the average number of microplastics concentration in the snail presence at Madong Village (492 ± 107.68 particles/ind.), Pengudang Village (476 ± 171.34 particles/ind.), Busung Village (360 ± 118.43 particles/ind) and Kawal Village (628 ± 191.93 particles/ind) wet weight. Microplastics concentration in the sediment at Madong Village (956 ± 171.18 particles/kg), Pengudang Village (928 ± 118.58 particles/kg), Busung Village (604 ± 119.26 particles/kg) and Kawal Village (1,136 ± 154.75 Particles/kg). Our observations also showed many plastics waste on the coastal area.

The quality of spermatozoa and testicular histology in insulin-injected Rattus norvegicus with diabetes mellitus

Insulin injection within a certain period of time can cause diabetic which has an effect on spermatogenesis disorder. This study aimed to analyze spermatogenesis disturbance in the diabetic rat model injected with exogenous insulin. Fifteen males of Rattus norvegicus were divided into three groups, namely P0: control, P1: Rattus norvegicus which is injected with insulin at a dose of 2/IU/Kg every day for 14 days, and P2: Rattus norvegicus which is injected with insulin at a dose of 2/IU/Kg every day for 28 days through the subcutaneous tissue in the abdomen. Observation were made on the weight of the testes, the gonads index, the number of sperm, the normality of sperm, the size of the spermatogenic cells as well as the description of the histology of the tubule seminiferous. Data were tested for normality using Shapiro Wilk test which then analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and LSD Post-Hoc test. The result of this study showed insulin injections for 14 and 28 days resulted in a significant reduction in testicular weight and quality of spermatozoa, including the number and morphological normality of spermatozoa, causing disorder in spermatogenesis in the form of decreased size of the spermatogenesis cells and tubule seminiferous spermatogenic teste. The result research can be conclude inhibition of spermatogenesis process may occur in exogenous insulin injected.

Comparative analysis of median and Laplacian filter to detect edges of non-contrast cardiac CT image

The incidence of heart disease is increasing every year. One of the preventive actions is through early detection of the disease to take further action. Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) helps doctors and cardiologists detect heart abnormalities seen in non-contrast cardiac CT images faster than manual detection. This study aims to detect the edges of non-contrast cardiac CT images. The method used is the Median and Laplacian filter algorithm using Matlab. The result shows that there is an automatic edge detection of non-contrast cardiac CT images. The conclusion obtained by the Laplacian filter with -8 kernel at its centre is clearer to detect edges of non-contrast cardiac CT images than the Median and Laplacian filters with -4 kernel at the centre. The study results are useful for medical image processing to facilitate the subsequent image analysis stage.

Effectiveness of assertive communication training in efforts to increase on work motivation affiliation nurse practitioner at regional general hospitals in Southeast Sulawesi

Assertive communication becomes a matter of concern in order that nurse practitioner can cooperate with others in various conditions. The nurse less motivated and showed bad attitude in collaborating with colleagues without good communication. The purpose of writing to identify the influence of assertive communication training to work motivation affiliation nurse practitioner at two regional general hospital in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research using design a quasi experiment pre test - post test with control group, with sampling in proportional sample with the total sample 74 nurse practitioners, 37 people intervention group and 37 people the control group. The early stages for the intervention group will be pre-test and then given an assertive communication training in 6 sessions, after that do post test 1, the next 2 weeks after the training is done again post test measurement 2. The result showed change of work motivation affiliation pre-post test group significantly higher intervention either on post test 1 and post test 2 (p < α). The study recommended that nursing managers need to improve the work motivation affiliation of nurse through training so that the hospitals to provide satisfaction for patients in receiving nursing services.

Local wisdom of Ngata Toro community in utilizing forest resources as a learning source of biology

Indonesian society is a pluralistic society with different cultures and local potencies that exist in each region. Some of local community still adherethe tradition from generation to generation in managing natural resources wisely. The application of the values of local wisdom is necessary to teach back to student to be more respect the culture and local potentials in the region. There are many ways developing student character by exploring local wisdom and implementing them as a learning resources. This study aims at revealing the values of local wisdom Ngata Toro indigenous people of Central Sulawesi Province in managing forest as a source of learning biology. This research was conducted by in-depth interviews, participant non-observation, documentation studies, and field notes. The data were analyzed with triangulation techniques by using a qualitative interaction analysis that is data collection, data reduction, and data display. Ngata Toro local community manage forest by dividing the forest into several zones, those arewana ngkiki, wana, pangale, pahawa pongko, oma, and balingkea accompanied by rules in the management of result-based forest conservation and sustainable utilization. By identifying the purpose of zonation and regulation of the forest, such values as the value of environmental conservation, balance value, sustainable value, and the value of mutual cooperation. These values are implemented as a biological learning resource which derived from the competences standard of analyze the utilization and conservation of the environment.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles using laser ablation method utilizing Nd:YAG laser

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted many researchers and scientist within the past decade due to their unique characteristics in physical, chemical, and biological properties compared to their macro scale. The AgNPs have been important subject of interest in applied science and material field and widely applied for various applications in the field of physics, chemistry, biology, environment, and medicine. The techniques usually used to synthesize silver nanoparticles are chemical, biological, and physical methods. However, chemical and biological methods still suffer from tedious sample pretreatment, contamination from additional agents during synthesis process, and quiet hazard and expensive. In this study, silver nanoparticles was synthesized using pulse laser ablation method. Experimentally, a high-purity silver plate (99, 95 %) was immersed in 25 ml pure aquades placed in a petri dish with a diameter 50 mm. A pulsed (Nd : YAG) laser (New Polaris II 1064 nm, max energy of 50 mJ, 7 ns) was focused on the gold sample target by a convex lens with a focal length of 30 mm. The laser repetition rate was 10 Hz, and the duration of laser bombardment was 13 hours. The results show that colloidal silver nanoparticles has yellowish colour. Furthermore, the produce silver nanoparticles have spherical shape with an averaged diameter size of tens nm. Detail results and discussion will be presented during presentation.
