Make or buy decision model with multi-stage manufacturing process and supplier imperfect quality

This research develops an make or buy decision model considering supplier imperfect quality. This model can be used to help companies make the right decision in case of make or buy component with the best quality and the least cost in multistage manufacturing process. The imperfect quality is one of the cost component that must be minimizing in this model. Component with imperfect quality, not necessarily defective. It still can be rework and used for assembly. This research also provide a numerical example and sensitivity analysis to show how the model work. We use simulation and help by crystal ball to solve the numerical problem. The sensitivity analysis result show that percentage of imperfect generally not affect to the model significantly, and the model is not sensitive to changes in these parameters. This is because the imperfect cost are smaller than overall total cost components.

Open pit mining profit maximization considering selling stage and waste rehabilitation cost

In open pit mining activities, determination of the cut-off grade becomes crucial for the company since the cut-off grade affects how much profit will be earned for the mining company. In this study, we developed a cut-off grade determination mode for the open pit mining industry considering the cost of mining, waste removal (rehabilitation) cost, processing cost, fixed cost, and selling stage cost. The main goal of this study is to develop a model of cut-off grade determination to get the maximum total profit. Secondly, this study is also developed to observe the model of sensitivity based on changes in the cost components. The optimization results show that the models can help mining company managers to determine the optimal cut-off grade and also estimate how much profit that can be earned by the mining company. To illustrate the application of the models, a numerical example and a set of sensitivity analysis are presented. From the results of sensitivity analysis, we conclude that the changes in the sales price greatly affects the optimal cut-off value and the total profit.

Developing green manufacturing indicators for the decorative paint industry: A case study of Indonesia

The development of the paint industry in Indonesia is currently quite rapid which has a good impact on the Indonesian economy. On the other hand, the paint industry is also required to produce paint products that are increasingly environmentally friendly to reduce the adverse effects on the environment along the supply chain. Currently, Indonesia does not have guidance regarding green manufacturing in the paint industry. The purpose of this study is to develop green manufacturing indicators in the case of the Indonesian decorative paint industry. Determination of the basic indicators of green manufacturing adopted from OECD sustainable development toolkit 18 indicators. The selection of relevant indicators adopted at the decorative paint industry is done by using the method of Delphi. The experts who were involved in the selection process indicator green manufacturing decorative paint industry is a stakeholder who have competence and experience in the paint industry supply chain. The results showed that from the 18 initial indicators 12 indicators were agreed by experts with a minimum agreement value of 83 percent.

The study of building inspection reliability and life cycle cost analysis in Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta

Asset management at Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta needs to be supported by a good audit system in order to maintain assets in a reliable condition, especially for buildings. The building reliability audit was carried out in terms of four criteria including safety, health, comfort, and ease (Keselamatan, Kesehatan, Kenyamanan, dan Kemudahan/4K). Similarly, the allocation of funds needed to fulfill these criteria throughout the life of the building was significant. This study aimed to analyze the reliability of the building, the level of comfort and the cost of building maintenance at Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta by considering the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) for the next 20 years with interest rate (i) 6%. The reliability of the building was viewed from the aspects of architecture, structure, utility and fire protection, accessibility, and layout of the building and the environment. The object of research was the 5-story Students' Dormitory Building D at UNS which was built in 2012. The results of the building reliability audit indicated the number of 87.11 (less reliable). Life Cycle Cost analysis resulted in a total cost of IDR 35,488,655,540, - with other costs consisting of Energy cost of IDR 2,084,418.740. Operation & Maintenance cost of IDR 4,295,920,818, -, and Replacement cost of IDR 1,793,880,632, -. In terms of comfort, it indicated the number of 78.99 (less reliable).

Reaction Kinetics of Levulinic Acid Synthesis from Glucose Using Bronsted Acid Catalyst

Glucose is the primary derivative of lignocellulosic biomass, which is abundantly available. Glucose has excellent potential to be converted into valuable compounds such as ethanol, sorbitol, gluconic acid, and levulinic acid (LA). Levulinic acid is a very promising green platform chemical. It is composed of two functional groups, ketone and carboxylate groups which can act as highly reactive electrophiles for nucleophilic attack so it has extensive applications, including fuel additives, raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry, and cosmetics. The reaction kinetics of LA synthesis from glucose using hydrochloric acid catalyst (bronsted acid) were studied in a wide range of operating conditions, i.e., temperature of 140-180 oC, catalyst concentration of 0.5-1.5 M, and initial glucose concentration of 0.1-0.5 M. The highest LA yield is 48.34 %wt at 0.1 M initial glucose concentration, 1 M HCl, and temperature of 180 oC. The experimental results show that the bronsted acid catalyst's reaction pathway consists of glucose decomposition to levoglucosan (LG), conversion of LG to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and rehydration of HMF to LA. His active duty assignments included the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations Director of Surface Warfare as Section Head for Surface Combatant Maintenance and Modernization Program Executive Office Expeditionary Warfare as Assistant Project Manager for the (TAKE 1)Class Program and as Deputy Director Environmental Programs Division at Naval Sea Systems Command. He is a 1993 graduate of the Naval Construction and Engineering Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Naval Engineers Degree and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Since 1995 he has authored thirteen published technical papers dealing with environmental issues. CDR Markle is the recipient of Fiscal Year 2001 Individual Environmental Quality Awards and Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition Team Awards from Naval Sea Systems Command Chief of Naval Operations Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense and the 2001 ASNE “Jimmie Hamilton” award. He is a Professional Engineer registered in the State of New York and Commonwealth of Virginia. He serves as the Chair of the Joint ASNE/SNAME Committee on Environmental Engineering and also as Chair of ASTM Ships and Marine Technology Marine Environmental Protection Subcommittee (F25.06).

Regulations governing the discharge of sewage from ships have been in force since the early 1970's. In response, the marine industry has developed ever more complex systems and processes for managing these wastes. The first compliance method involved holding wastes until they could be legally discharged;as technology advanced, treatment systems were developed and installed to enable discharge within regulated waters. As the size and number of ships as increased with maturation of the ocean tourism business, more restrictive regulations have been enacted to minimize the impact on sensitive waters. The trend is toward increasing regulation of both sewage and graywater. The most recent action occurred on 12 October 2005 when the Governor of California signed into law Senate Bill 771 regulating most ship liquid discharges within state waters. This paper describes the development of an innovative advanced wastewater treatment technology, based on advanced oxidation, bearing in mind the lessons learned from systems developed by industry over the past thirty years.

Multi responses optimization of plastic injection molding for biodegradable polymers using Taguchi method and TOPSIS

This study reports a simulation study to reduce the shrinkage and warpage of Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) by optimizing the injection molding parameters using the Taguchi-TOPSIS method. Solidwork software were used to creating a specimen modelling of car accessories (shark fin antenna) and then employing the infinite element software, Autodesk MoldFlow Adviser. The effect of injection parameters on the warpage and shrinkage of specimen were examined carefully. The simulation result shows that Taguchi-TOPSIS method provided an outstanding result for the optimization of injection parameters to produce minimum volumetric shrinkage. Orthogonal array design was using L9 of design experiment. The injection parameter of melt temperature was the most significant parameter that influences the warpage and volumetric shrinkage for car accessories (shark fin antenna). The results of this study indicated that the optimal level combination to get minimum shrinkage and warpage in the injection molding process are 25°C of mold temperature, 148°C of melt temperature, 0.7 s of injection time, and 8 s of cooling time. The optimum value of warpage and volumetric shrinkage rate are 0.9949 mm and 4.14 %.

Employing Galerkin method and field study for model calibration to perform sediment transport modelling in Agathis Lake, Universitas Indonesia

The increasing of urban development and the decreasing of public awareness to environment promote flood every year for urban cities. Several lakes or ponds are sacrificed due to both urban development and landfilling. Bad habit of society to throw garbage to the lakes affects the society to think that the economic value of lakes could be increased by filling them with the land. These lead to make the lakes become vulnerable to sedimentation from urban activities. Universitas Indonesia as educational institution starts to develop how to manage sedimentation by hydrodynamics and sediment transport modelling. The research uses Resources Modelling Associates (RMA) program to run the model and Agathis Lake as the study area to perform the simulation. It is expected that the program output data could represent the field data, so the validation method should be conducted. The issue to validate the data would be problematic if simulation factors data could not accommodate real-world observed data. This study aims to employ Galerkin method to understand finite element method in Resources Modelling Associates program (RMA) in order to avoid black box when using it and to conduct a field study to perform calibration method of sediment transport modelling in the study area, Agathis Lake that is located in Universitas Indonesia.

Seismic retrofitting of existing steel structures with X-bracing

Indonesia is a country that stands at the confluence of three major plates of the earth, namely the Indo-Australian plate, the Eurasian plate and the Pacific plate, which are actively moving. The plate that greatly affects the situation around the Java region is the urging of the Indo-Australian plate towards the Eurasian plate. This situation caused the formation of many volcanoes in Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Papua, and active movement between plates often causes earthquakes in the region. Indonesia's geographical location has a high risk of earthquake impact, but the rapid development and growth of infrastructure can affect the service life of a building structure. Earthquakes are dynamic loads that can not be predicted, particularly for buildings designed with old design codes and standards, which are vulnerable to earthquake/seismic loads. To achieve satisfactory global seismic behavior, it is necessary to evaluate the existing structure and add appropriate retrofitting. This paper analyzes the retrofitting of steel structures using the X-Bracing BRB with the Pushover Analysis Method. The results of this study are presented in the form of a fragility curve that describes the probability of damage before and after retrofitting X-Bracing BRB. By knowing the overall structure in the form of a capacity curve, it is possible to evaluate the retrofitting strategy rationally.

Backflow characteristics at Palu estuary as the impact of bed subsidence after the 2018 earthquake and Tsunami

The Palu River in Central Sulawesi is one of the rivers prone to flooding in Indonesia, especially in the middle and downstream segments. The intensity of flooding has also increased after the 2018 Earthquake and Tsunami due to bed subsidence around Palu Bay triggered by the earthquake. This paper intends to investigate the impact of configuration changes and bed subsidence on flow characteristics, particularly the upstream return flow associated with high tide. Hydrodynamic simulations have been performed for tracing the water level profile upstream using the HEC-RAS Package. The simulation was applied for three conditions: minimum discharge, average discharge and maximum discharge, and it established high tide levels as a condition of the downstream boundary. The high tide level is defined as the simulation boundary because high tides generally cause inundation in the estuary due to backflow during both low and high flows. The simulation results based on the geometry of the river after the 2018 earthquake and tsunami show that the backflow to the upstream of the Palu River due to high tides has been seen in all three simulation conditions. High tide has triggered the longest return flow at minimum discharge reaching nearly 3 km upstream with varying heights along the water level profile. This backflow has the potential to cause bottom silting due to reduced flow velocity.
