Building integrated thin film photovoltaic performance modelling on conventional building

PV(Photovoltaic) technologies have been developed into many forms. The emergence of BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) technology, it is possible for a building component to have another function as an energy generator. The technology of thin film PV, can be used as glass in buildings. PV (Photovoltaics) thin films can be applied as windows glasses. For older or conventional buildings, it is necessary to modify the window to applying the BIPV system. To estimate the energy generated from the BIPV system, a study needs to be conducted. In this study case analysis, a BIPV will be applicate on conventional 4-storey office building. Simulation is done with SAM (system Advisor Model) software. For solar energy potential is obtained from PV GIS data. From the simulation, the 40% of transparency thin film PV that applied in conventional building has 6.8% of capacity factor and 9,761 kWh of energy generated in the first year. A single 0.72 m2 CdTe thin film PV module can generate approximately 23.76-38.01 kWh/year. The thin film BIPV generation is very depending on PV shading, so it important to consider PV orientation and position.

The Indonesian government has issued the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) Regulation 49/2018 regarding the utilization of rooftop solar power systems by customers of utility grid provider (PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara). The policy aims to encourage the penetration of renewable energy usage to reduce carbon gas emissions. This policy governs the general requirements and procedures for the installation of rooftop PV(photovoltaic) systems by utility grid customers. Therefore, economic analysis is needed to be known the impacts to the customers. This study will simulate the 4-storey office building which electricity supplied by grid connected 41 kWp of rooftop PV without battery storage under PV rooftop scheme using HOMER (Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources) software. This case study simulate the new for Environmental Studies Center of Gadjah Mada University (PSLH UGM) building located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. From this study will be obtained the value of the cost of energy (COE). In this simulation, the 41kWp rooftop PV supplies 485.32 kWh/day and 148.21 kW peak demand load. The cost of energy generated from on grid rooftop PV system is 1.431,00 IDR/kWh, while the grid rates is 1.468,00 IDR.

Consumption, power number, and power curve characteristic of water diesel fuel emulsion mixer

Investigations have been done on the consumption of electric power in the process of water-diesel fuel emulsion mixing. The mixing process has been carried out using a mixer equipped with a 4-blade impeller. The mixer and impeller are made of aluminum material, while the impeller shaft is made of stainless steel. The mixer has a cylindrical tube shape and has a volume of 450 ml. Emulsion fuels consist of 85%v diesel fuel and 15%v water. This emulsion fuel has a density property of 858.8 kg/m3 and a dynamic viscosity of 0.0547 Pa.s. The mixing process was carried out at 2,000 rpm mixing speed up to 8,000 rpm at 1,000 rpm intervals. The mixer is connected to an electric motor and inverter, so the mixing speed of the mixer can be adjusted. In this research, data of electric current and electrical voltage are taken at each variation of mixing speed. The experimental data show that the higher the mixing speed, the higher the electric current needed. Thus, electricity consumption also is higher. The highest electrical power consumption is at 8,000 rpm mixer speed, while the lowest power consumption is at 2,000 rpm rotation. Non- dimensional power number (Np) analysis was also carried out in this study. By calculating the Reynold number (Re) and the electric power consumption at each rotation of the mixer, the power number curve (Np) is obtained. This curve is used to predict the power consumption of a mixer with the same impeller shape.

Can we adapt to tidal flooding?

Tidal flooding has been a menace to the northern coastal area of Java, especially in Semarang City and Demak Regency. It happens continuously and the severity is worsened day by day. It becomes hazard for rural and urban areas hence mitigation efforts associated with coastal regions are required. Based on the situation, the present research wants to examine the need and the importance of adaptation strategy in flood prone areas. Several findings were reported and then recommended to the stakeholders to be implemented in policies and programs. The present research was conducted by using descriptive-qualitative method and purposive data sampling. The study area involved Panggung Lor in Semarang City and Sayung in Demak Regency. Analysis was carried out and conclusions were reported based on the findings. In overall, it can be concluded that these areas can adapt to tidal flooding.

Simplified simulation of glucose hydrolysis to levulinic acid for estimating kinetic parameters

Levulinic acid (LA) is a short-chain fatty acid with ketone and carboxylic acid group which gives it superior characteristics as a building-block chemical for producing various chemicals, such as: Ƴ-valerolactone (GVL), methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), diphenolic acid (DPA), delta-aminolevulinic acid (DALA), and levulinate ester. Levulinic acid can be synthesized from various kinds of biomass and its derivatives, one of which is glucose. The reaction route of glucose hydrolysis to LA generally involves intermediates such as fructose, levoglucosan, and HMF, depending on the type of catalyst used. In this study, simulation of the kinetics of the hydrolysis reaction of glucose into LA was performed by simplifying the reaction scheme from reference data. The variables studied were temperature (140-160 oC) and concentration of hydrochloric acid catalyst (0.5-1.5 M). The hydrolysis data were simulated with three different models using MATLAB 2018a. The function of ode45 was used to solve the differential equations and fminsearch tool was used to minimize the kinetic parameter values. Chang’s model produces a greatest mean R2 (closer to one), which is considered more suitable than Mikola and Liang’s model.

Effects of chemical treatment on the structure and morphology of bacterial cellulose film

Development of extraction process of Bacterial Cellulose (BC) using chemical treatment in order to be developed as reinforcement in the composite product to improve fiber compatibility of BC in polymer metric. This study aimed to know the effect of chemical treatment against the structure and morphology of BC film. The methods used to make a film from BC fiber obtained from pineapples’ peels waste. Pellicle was fermented for 14 days then washed by distilled water prior to treatment. Pellicle soaked in a chemical solution such as NaOH, H2O2, Bmimcl with each concentration of 2.5% for 2 hours then dried in the oven and the result was analyzed using SEM and XRD. The result showed that chemical treatment against BC decreased the intensity and crystallite size. On distilled water immersion (as control), the highest peak diffraction located in peak 22.63 °2θ with intensity of 292.31 counts, the crystallite size of 10.01 nm, after NaOH, H2O2 and BmimCl chemical treatment, the peak intensity decreased consecutively to 251.19 counts, 269.32 counts, and 241.49 counts as well as crystallite size decrease to 3.61 nm, 4.07 nm, and 5.11 nm, respectively. SEM observation showed that BC film treated using distilled water wasn’t damaged, while fiber and pellicle which treated using NaOH had a lot of damage.

The Increase of universities quantity in Indonesia does not improve the quality. Vocational schools established to meet the needs of the industry. Evaluation of block lecture systems is needed to identify the mental workload and the physical workload felt by students. The research was conducted on 25 students of yarn making technique. The methods that used to measure mental workload is NASA-Tlx with 6 subscales. The physical workload is measured by the calculation of the pulse so the level of cardiovascular classification is known. The results of mental load measurement are only 4% of students who feel moderate mental workload level, while others have a high workload. Based on the identification of physical workload there are 20% of students who need improvement and the remaining 80% do not need improvement because it is not in the fatigue category. It can be said that it is necessary to evaluate the lecture system in terms of mental burden perceived by the students in order to produce competent graduates output according to the needs of today’s textile industry.

PT. Sekarlima is a woven fabrics manufacturing company. One of the raw materials for fabric weaving process is yarn. To fulfill the demand for woven fabric the company faces some problems in supplier selection and the allocation of raw materials. Supplier selection and the allocation are essential to support the smoothness of the production process. To produce a good quality product the company needs a good planning system and integrated implementation, in accordance with production activities in which it cannot be separated from raw materials. Supplier selection is important in this activity, as it will determine the cost of production. The aims of this research are to determine a set of appropriatesuppliers of yarn using the TOPSIS method and allocate theyarn to selected suppliers using Linear programming model. TOPSIS is one of the multi-criteria decision methods in which the selected alternative determined by the closest distance of the ideal solution and has the furthest distance from the non-ideal solution using the Euclidean distance (the distance between two points) to determine the relative distance of the alternative. From the results of the analysis, there are 4 suppliers are selected, namely TYF, AGT, DLS, and APC. Five criteria are used in the supplier selection, namely quality, price, delivery, flexibility, and responsiveness. TOPSIS resulted in the order of rank of each supplier TYF, AGT, DLS, and APC is 0.52, 0.48, 0.48, and 0.23 respectively. The order allocation from a linear programming model for each supplier is 1088. 64 kg, 870.91 kg, 526.18 kg, and 54.43 kg.

Mechanical properties of bacterial nanocellulose membrane from pineapple peel waste after homogenization process

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has unique physical properties such as having high crystallinity, mechanical strength, purity, porosity, high water absorption capacity and biodegradable. This research aims to investigate the effect of high-pressure homogenizer (HPH) treatment cycle on the tensile strength and morphology of BNC membrane. This experiment begins from pineapple peel waste juice added with Acetobacter xylinum incubated for 14 days. The yielded pellicle then washed by distilled water then immersed in 1% NaOH for 24 h and pellicle well disintegrated using a high-speed blender, followed by homogenizing using HPH with repetition of 5 cycles at 150 bar. The solution was cast into a rectangular glass container and dried into an oven at 60 °C for 8 h. Results show that the tensile strength of BNC was 77.76 MPa and 75.97 MPa for membrane without HPH process and HPH process, respectively. The elastic modulus of BNC was16 GPa and 27.25 GPa for membrane without HPH process and HPH process, respectively. Morphological analysis using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the pores of BNC membrane prepared using HPH smaller than non-HPH. This means that the BNC membrane prepared by HPH was dense compared than Non-HPH membrane. Dense membrane caused a higher strength of the membrane.

He currently the program manager for the Sustainable Hardware and Affordable Readiness Practice Program (SHARP). is a Navy-wide logistics research and development prgram aimed at the successful transiton of proved technologies inot the fleet. SHARP focuses on reducing acquisition performance capability reliability maintainability and readiness of these systems. Mr. Grubb has served as a department director for the past eleven years. His most recent assignment was as director of the Tactical Computer Resources and Test Equipment Department. This organization provided acquisition and in-service engineering support of the Navy's tectical embedded computers priphirals displays and mass memory storage devices. The organization also provided a complete range of product engineering and metrology engineerig services for SSP NevSeaSysCom and the Trident Program. Prior to this appointment Mr. Grubb was deptuy director psysical security programs department and site responsible for program management and system integration of ashore integrated security systems. Mr. Grubb holds a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State Universtiy an M.S. degree in industrial engineering from Purdue University and has copleted the course work (Dec.'96 for a master's degree in public and environment affairs at Indiana University-Purdue Univeristy Indianapolis. Dr. Alfred Skolnick operates System Science Consultants (SSC) specilizing in strategic planning technical program definiton technology assessment and engineering analyses on selected matters of national interest. He has taught physics mathematics and management sciences at University of Virginia and Marymount University and is currently adjunct professor of mathematics at Northern Virginia Community College. In an era of fiscal austerity, downsizing and unforgiving pressure upon human and economic capital, it is an Augean task to identify resources for fresh and creative work. The realities of the day and the practical demands of more immediate fleet needs can often dictate higher priorities. Yet, the Navy must avoid eating its seed corn. Exercising both technical insight and management foresight, the fleet, the R&D community, the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OpNav) and the product engineering expertise of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) are joined and underway with integrated efforts to marry new, fully demonstrated technologies and operational urgencies. Defense funding today cannot sponsor all work that can be mission-justified over the long term because budgets are insufficient to support product maturation within the classical development cycle. However, by rigorous technical filtering and astute engineering of both marketplace capabilities and currently available components, it is possible in a few select cases to compress and, in effect, integrate advanced development (6.3), engineering development (6.4), weapon procurement (WPN), ship construction (SCN), operation and maintenance (O&M,N) budgetary categories when fleet criticalities and technology opportunities can happily meet. In short, 6.3 funds can be applied directly to ''ripe gateways'' so modern technology is inserted into existing troubled or aging systems, sidestepping the lengthy, traditional development cycle and accelerating practical payoffs to recurrent fleet problems. To produce such constructive results has required a remarkable convergence of sponsor prescience and engineering workforce excellence.
