This study presents an investigation of chemical and physical characterization, green process analysis, techno-economic considerations, and carbon emissions for synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from plastic and can waste using microwave-assisted synthesis. The microwave-assisted synthesis proves to be more cost-effective, with a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. The synthesized material (MIL-Mw-U) demonstrates excellent performance in methylene blue (MB) removal, achieving 98.41% removal, with 97.87% removal although the catalyst is used in the third cycle. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto MIL-Mw-U achieved a maximum capacity of 295.26 mgg⁻¹ at pH 3 and decreased to 258.68 mgg⁻¹ at pH 11 due to OH⁻ competition. The Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.9381) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.999) confirmed monolayer chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. This innovative approach supports circular economy principles by converting can and plastic bottle waste into functional material for dye removal, offering sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. © 2025 The Authors

Performance of biofoam polyurethane-urea/rice straw waste (Oryza Sativa) as a noise reducer

Noise is one of the common problems found in the metal processing industry. The noise that continuously occurs can influence the health of workers. The large number of workers who do not use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and pay less attention to work safety, resulting in them being exposed to high noise, for example, parts of production units that have an average noise intensity of 102.9 dBA/8 hours. The need of noise reduction materials for the metal processing industry is still very potent. Utilization of eco-friendly noise reduction materials in a wide frequency range cannot be fulfilled by the existing materials. This research aims to synthesize polyurethane-urea/rice straw waste (PUU/RSW) foam and to measure its performance as a noise reducer. Rice straw waste is used as an additive in a mixture of polyurethane-urea foam. The one-step method is used for the synthesis of PUU/RSW biofoam using with the composition of maleic anhydric (MAH) 0.1% (w/w), ethylene diamine (EDA) 1% (w/w), variations of polyethylene glycol/methylene diamine (PEG/MDI) (1/1), and rice straw waste with the variations from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, to 5% (w/w). The characterization of biofoam structures was carried out using FTIR. The effectiveness of the foam in sound absorption is tested by using the two-microphone technique according to the ASTM E-1050 procedure. The results show that physically biofoam products are medium-textured (soft to hard), porous and brown with chemical groups identified C-H, C-O, O-H. Noise absorption test results show that PUU/RSW biofoam is effective as a noise-reducing material as it has a high absorption coefficient in the wide frequency range.

Cengklik Reservoir in Boyolali is a source of agricultural and fishery activities experiencing a tendency for environmental degradation. The use of synthetic chemical fertilizers and animal feed residues tends to increase organic pollution. This research aims to (1) map the level of pollution of organic parameters in Cengklik Reservoir water and (2) determine alternative solutions to reduce the impact of organic pollution. This research is quantitative. Water samples were taken with the grab in situ method at 8 stations namely Senting River inlet, Njati River inlet, Pepe River inlet, water hyacinth station, floating net cage station, water hyacinth-free station - floating net cage and reservoir outlet. The parameters analyzed included phosphate, sulphate, nitrite and nitrate. The analysis was performed using a comparative descriptive method by comparing between stations and quality standards based on Government Regulation Number 82 of 2001 concerning Water Quality Management and Water Pollution Control. From this research, we can sum up that (1) the phosphate compound exceeds the quality standard at the Senting river inlet (2.759 mg/L), the Njati river inlet (0.309 mg/L) and the Pepe river inlet (0.254 mg/L), while sulfate and nitrate compounds meet the quality standards at all stations, but the nitrite exceeds the quality standard at all inlet stations (average inlet of 0.4403 mg/L) and reservoir water bodies (average reservoir water body of 0.7727 mg/L), and (2) control of organic pollution can be done through reducing waste from its source by substituting synthetic chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers, building WWTP of MSMEs, regulating the Domestic Wastewater Management System (DWMS), and avoiding excessive fish feeding.

Preliminary result of 3-D attenuation tomography beneath Sunda Strait and western part of Java

Sunda strait lies in the transition zone of two different subduction system that is almost perpendicular to the subduction in southern Java and oblique subduction in western Sumatra. The series of major disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions is a manifestation of its tectonic setting complexity. We used selected waveform data from724 earthquakes that occurred around the Sunda strait and western part of Java from 2009 – 2015 recorded by 21 MCGA network stations to construct three dimensional image of seismic attenuation. Frequency independent attenuation operators (t*) was determined using spectral fitting method for P and S wave arrivals, respectively. The inversion was performed using simul2000 algorithm to image the lateral and vertical variations of Qp and Qs value in the Sunda Strait and western part of Java. Some interesting features such as subducting slab, mantle wedge, magma chamber under volcanos and fault zones can be imaged well.

Preliminary study on bioactive compounds of functional drinks of turmeric rhizome, moringa leaf, and brown seaweed mixture to its potential applications in diabetes mellitus treatment

Turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn) rhizome, Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) leaf, and brown seaweed (Sargassum polycycstum) have bioactive compounds that potent to treat Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This research aims to get the best proportion of their mixture as functional drinks. Methanolic extract of fresh and flour form and decoction of flour form of each ingredient analyzed for total phenolic content (TPC) and total phlorotannin content (TPhC). The decoction then screened for phytochemicals. Functional drinks were made using decoction method. The research design used a Completely Randomized Design with six treatment levels, namely M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, and M6. Then, determined by the multiple attribute method with parameters TPC and TPhC to get the best proportion of mixture and then screened for phytochemicals. Turmeric rhizome flour had the highest TPC (16.76±0.51 mg GAE/g) and brown seaweed flour decoction had the highest TPhC (11.11±1.38 mg PGE/g). Phytochemical screening of decoction of flour form revealed the presence and absence of some bioactive compounds. The best functional drink is with the proportion of 50%:25%:25% with TPC of 6.92±0.10 mg GAE/g, TPhC of 4.85±0.11 mg PGE/g and the presence of all compounds tested by phytochemical screening.

Small hydropower spot prediction using SWAT and a diversion algorithm, case study: Upper Citarum Basin

Small-Scale Hydropower (SHP) had been important electric energy power source in Indonesia. Indonesia is vast countries, consists of more than 17.000 islands. It has large fresh water resource about 3 m of rainfall and 2 m of runoff. Much of its topography is mountainous, remote but abundant with potential energy. Millions of people do not have sufficient access to electricity, some live in the remote places. Recently, SHP development was encouraged for energy supply of the places. Development of global hydrology data provides opportunity to predict distribution of hydropower potential. In this paper, we demonstrate run-of-river type SHP spot prediction tool using SWAT and a river diversion algorithm. The use of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with input of CFSR (Climate Forecast System Re-analysis) of 10 years period had been implemented to predict spatially distributed flow cumulative distribution function (CDF). A simple algorithm to maximize potential head of a location by a river diversion expressing head race and penstock had been applied. Firm flow and power of the SHP were estimated from the CDF and the algorithm. The tool applied to Upper Citarum River Basin and three out of four existing hydropower locations had been well predicted. The result implies that this tool is able to support acceleration of SHP development at earlier phase.

Reducing room noise using polyurethane-urea biofoam/industrial plywood sawdust waste (PUU/IPSW)

Rapid industrial growth leads to environmental problems, including room noise problems. Noise-reducing materials in the market have not fully reduced the maximum noise intensity to 85 dB yet according to the standard quality of room noise. On the other hand, the plywood industry produces sawdust waste that has not been widely used. The synthesis of noise reduction material with sawdust waste additives is the right alternative. This research aims to synthesize and characterize the polyurethane-urea/plywood sawdust waste (PUU/IPSW) biofoam as a noise reducing material. The PUU/IPSW biofoam synthesis method is performed using a one shot process technique with variations in waste composition of 0 - 5% (w/w), maleic anhydric (MAH) 0.1% (w/w) as a coupling agent and ethylenediamine (EDA) of 1% (w/w) as a chain extender. Structural identification of biofoam was carried out using Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR). The acoustic test was carried out according to ASTM-E1050 standards. From the visual observation, it shows that PUU/IPSW biofoam has physical characteristics of the yellow-brown color and soft-hard texture. Based on FTIR spectra identification, biofoam contains CH, CO and OH chemical groups. The results of acoustic performance test show that the biofoam noise absorption coefficient is very good.

Menopause is a condition where a woman lost protection from estrogen, causing susceptibility to arterial stenosis (atherosclerosis) induced by increased free radicals’ activity and inflammation. It was reported that nicotine can reduce free radicals’ activity and act as an anti-inflammatory agent. This study means to explore the possibility of nicotine usage to prevent atherosclerosis and to reduce free radical activity. We did experimental randomized post-test only controlled group research in 18-20 weeks old female Rattus norvegicus. We examined tail arterial histomorphometry, Wall to Lumen Ratio (WTLR), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) level of abdominal aorta as markers of free radical activity. The first group was normal rats (Sham). The second group represents the ovariectomy group (ovariectomy-only/Ovx). The third to the fifth group were ovariectomized and given nicotine in a dose of 0.25 mg/kg body weight (P1), 0.5 mg/kg (P2), and 0.75 mg/kg (P3). Group P1-P3 was given daily nicotine by oral route for 4 weeks, started from 3 weeks post-ovariectomy. MDA levels of P3 were significantly lower than Ovx group (p = 0.036, Tukey HSD). WTLR measurement found no significant differences across all groups. Finally, we conclude that nicotine has antioxidant properties and does not affect tail artery WTLR.

Forest fire, classified as a natural hazard or human-induced hazard, has negative impacts on humans. These negative impacts are including economic loss, health problems, transportation disruption and land degradation or even biodiversity loss. During 2015, forest fire had occurred at the Merang-Kepahyang peat forest that has a total area of about 69.837,00 ha. In order to set a rehabilitation plan for recovering the impact of forest fire, information on the total burnscar area and severity level is required. In this study, the total burnscar area and severity level is evaluated using a calculation on the Normalized Burning Ratio (NBR) Index. The calculation is based on the Near Infra Red (NIR) and Short Wave Infra Red (SWIR) of the satellite imageries from LANDSAT. The images of pre-and post-fire are used to evaluate the severity level, which is defined as a difference in NBR Index of pre- and post-fire. It is found that about 42.906,00 ha of the total area of Merang-Kepahyang peat area have been fired in 2015. These burned area are classified into four categories, i.e., unburned, low, extreme and moderate extreme. By overlying the spatial map of burning level with other thematic maps, it is expected that strategy for rehabilitation plan can be well developed.
