Experimental analysis of jet slurry erosion on martensitic stainless steel

Due to their enhanced tribological properties that contribute to an increased useful life of components, martensitic stainless steels are an excellent option for industrial applications such as hydroelectric, petrochemical, civil construction and mineral processing plants. In the present investigation, the erosive wear of AISI 410 martensitic stainless steel is evaluated after thermal treatment by quenching and tempering by mass loss, under erosive attack at 30° and 90° incidence angles, using a self-made jet slurry erosion equipment controlling parameters such as speed, volume of fluid, temperature and concentration of erosive particles of erodent. The characterization of the eroded samples was carried out in terms of the microstructure (SEM) and microhardness as well as the particle size distribution (LG) and morphology of the erodent. It was possible to establish the relationship between the slurry erosive wear and the physical properties inherent of stainless steel for this particular experimental configuration, concluding that the steel presents better resistance to jet slurry erosion wear when compared to austenitic steel commonly used in the industry.

Seeking to study innovative solar cell compositions with the goal to reach the highest energy efficiency level attainable, the aim of this study was to develop a route to obtain a solar cell composed by hybrid perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) using a sequential deposition method through the techniques of spin-coating and immersion. Initially, the deposition of PbI2 thin film of was performed on a FTO/glass substrate coated with TiO2, which was subsequently converted into perovskite crystals through spin coating using a CH3NH3I solution. The influence of the PbI2 layer thickness on the formation of CH3NH3PbI3 crystals was evaluated. The hydrophilic characteristic of TiO2 affects the distribution of the crystals nucleation sites, since PbI2 possesses a non-polar liquid characteristic. The characterization of the perovskite thin films showed that thickness affects directly the bandgap and the surface morphology, revealing the presence of dendritic structures and acicular crystals. Both growth and coverage increased for thinner layers of PbI2. It was also possible to observe an increased uniformity in the film for smaller PbI2 layers.

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors. © 2024 American Association for the Advancement of Science. In this paper we proposed an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) and digital image processing (DIP) to deal with the problem of cutting identical items (pieces) with irregular shapes in metal plates (objects). The goal is to maximize the number of items to be cut in the available area of the object. In this approach both object and the items are depicted as color images. The GA is responsible for generating the solutions, each one represented by a vector containing a set of translations and angles that indicate the positions and orientations for cutting the pieces. The evaluation of each solution generated by GA is performed by an image analysis algorithm that basically detects overlapping among the items placed on the object. Preliminary experiments indicate that the use of GA combined with DIP is a good alternative for solving the investigated problem. © 2015 ACM.

This paper presents a new way for automatic detection of SSVEPs through correlation analysis between tensor models. 3-way EEG tensor of channel x frequency x time is decomposed into constituting factor matrices using PARAFAC model. PARAFAC analysis of EEG tensor enables us to decompose multichannel EEG into constituting temporal, spectral and spatial signatures. SSVEPs characterized with localized spectral and spatial signatures are then detected exploiting a correlation analysis between extracted signatures of the EEG tensor and the corresponding simulated signatures of all target SSVEP signals. The SSVEP that has the highest correlation is selected as the intended target. Two flickers blinking at 8 and 13 Hz were used as visual stimuli and the detection was performed based on data packets of 1 second without overlapping. Five subjects participated in the experiments and the highest classification rate of 83.34% was achieved, leading to the Information Transfer Rate (ITR) of 21.01 bits/min.

programmability is one of the key factors on software defined networks (SDN), once it allows to decouple between data plan and control plan. However, in such context, managing several applications' inputs and outputs is a little explored task on controllers field, which are not in a controlled and organized environment. This article proposes a method to make SDN applications to reach the administrator, allow him to manage his use in the network. This proposal is validated through performance tests in the repository, which stores the applications, along with developed modules to help its management and control, making the organization and coordination method safe, efficient and adjustable to any controller on software-defined network.

This paper presents a methodology for roughness analysis based on surface characteristics of images obtained from optical and electronic microscopes. Texture analysis has been widely used in different fields, such as medical image analysis, visual interpretation of remote sensing images, image search and industrial quality inspection of manufactured products, which is the focus of this paper. We present a novel method of analysis based on texture characteristics. The Haralick descriptors are used to describe the surface texture and to classify its roughness. The primary roughness standards are evaluated and classified according to several features considering these descriptors. The set of values is the input of a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network. The obtained results show that it can be possible to advance this methodology in order to develop a roughness digital measurement system for the evaluation of surface ending process. © 2012 Institute of Telecommunica.

The development of real-time quality estimator schemes for emerging Internet videos with different content types remains a significant challenge and is crucial for the success of wireless multimedia systems. However, currently in-service assessment schemes fail in capturing subjective aspects of multimedia content related to the user perception. Therefore, this paper proposes an on-the-fly parametric video quality estimator approach (called MultiQoE) for real-time video streaming applications. Experiments in a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) scenario were carried out to show the accuracy, benefit, and impact of MultiQoE compared to widely used Quality of Experience (QoE) subjective, objective and parametric methods.
