The combination of testing techniques is considered an effective strategy to evaluate a software product. However, the selection of which techniques to combine in a software project has been an interesting challenge in the Software engineering field. This paper presents a proposal extending an approach developed to support the combined selection of model-based testing (MBT) techniques, named Porantim, applying Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization strategy by determining the smallest dominating set in a bipartite and weighted graph. Thus, a local search strategy algorithm is proposed generating solutions aiming at maximizing the coverage of software project characteristics and skills required by the testing team to use the techniques and minimizing the eventual effort to construct models used for test cases generation. A preliminary evaluation analyzes this new approach when compared to the Porantim's original version, and the results indicate improvements in the MBT techniques selection. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we explore the integration among Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Agent Based Simulation Tools. An Agent-Based Geographical Information System (ABGIS) could be characterized as a kind of system integrating features commonly found in Geographical Information System with the features of Agent-Based Simulation Tools. ABGIS would give to scientists and researches, not necessarily computer experts, access to powerful simulation tools and an environment that is an excellent metaphor to represent our spatio-temporal world. With ABGIS we could explore the dynamics of spatiotemporal systems, and particularly but not exclusively, complex systems.

He joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University in 1991 where he was named a University Faculty Scholar in 1999 and promoted to Full Professor in 2001. Since August 2001 he has been a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Mathematics at Colorado State University. His current interests are in communication networks and optimization methods. He coauthored the best-selling book An Introduction to Optimization 2nd Edition Wiley-Interscience 2001. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 1995 and the ASEE Frederick Emmons Terman Award in 1998. He coauthored a paper that was awarded Best Paper in the journal Computer Networks 2003. Professor Chong is a Fellow of the IEEE. He was founding chairman of the IEEE Control Systems Society Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems and until recently served as an IEEE Control Systems Society Distinguished Lecturer. He has been on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He is currently on the editorial board of the journal Computer Networks. Solution techniques for Markov decision problems rely on exact knowledge of the transition rates, which may be difficult or impossible to obtain. In this paper, we consider Markov decision problems with uncertain transition rates represented as compact sets. We first consider the problem of sensitivity analysis where the aim is to quantify the range of uncertainty of the average per-unit-time reward given the range of uncertainty of the transition rates. We then develop solution techniques for the problem of obtaining the max-min optimal policy, which maximizes the worst-case average per-unit-time reward. In each of these problems, we distinguish between systems that can have their transition rates chosen independently and those where the transition rates depend on each other. Our solution techniques are applicable to Markov decision processes with fixed but unknown transition rates and to those with time-varying transition rates.

A generic simulation tool aimed to explore the dynamics of spatio-temporal systems doesn't exists yet. First steps in the direction of generic agent-based simulation tools were given with the Swarm project [1],[2] and Starlogo Software [3], [4]. However these tools don't provide an apropriate representation for space. Here, we argue for the need of integration among Geographical Information Systems and Agent Based System (ABS) as a good metaphor for our spatio-temporal world and give an example, among inumerous, that could benefit from this: web-based warfare games. Our example comprises a web agent-based system that operates on data provided by Geographical Information Systems [5], [6] and aims to simulate naval operations known as Control of Maritime Area [7]. © 2005 IEEE.

Agent-Based Geographical Information System (ABGIS) could be characterized as a kind of system integrating features commonly found in Geographical Information System and in Agent-Based Simulation Tools. ABGIS provides a powerful simulation tool and an envyronment that is an excelent metaphor to represent our spatio-temporal world. With ABGIS we could explore the dynamics of spatio-temporal systems, particularly, but not exclusively, complex systems. It is possible to simulate complex systems having as a starting point only simple elements (agents), embedded in some type of environment. These agents can inter-act which each other in only specific and very simple ways. As the result of the interaction among the agents and the environment, the behavior of the complex system at macrocosmic level then emerges. According this line of thinking, there are a lot of social, biological, and ecological processes that can be simulated by agent-based models [1],[2], In this article we give a general description of the desirable capabilities of ABSGIS, describing some features it should incorporate, and presenting some examples that could explore this kind of tool. © 2005 IEEE.

Interoperability is a key point for integrating heterogeneous computing systems. A usual approach proposes the integration of the conceptual databases schemes into a global conceptual scheme, to resolve syntactic and structural heterogeneity. Moreover, semantic problems can remain. Ontologies have been largely designated to overcome semantic heterogeneity. We propose the specification of a formal ontology about the specific knowledge domain to be shared among several database systems build a posteriori of the ontology specification. We reach this integration through a global scheme, developed as a software layer among the databases under consideration. To test this approach we elaborated a case study, based upon hypothetical queries submitted to heterogeneous databases, with data on soil domain, to identify the soil most appropriate to a certain culture. The results are promising, but crucial, in our approach, is the acceptance for a given community of a common vocabulary and its relationships and that are captured by the ontology and transformed to the target conceptual models.

In this work, we present and analyze the use of a reconfigurable job scheduling simulator called RJSSim as an aid tool for parallel processing learning. This software is a functional and performance Java-based simulator of job scheduling policies. Our objectives are: to present RJSSim;to show the use of RJSSim and reconfigurability concepts for parallel processing learning. First, we present a prototype of RJSSim and the reconfigurability concept. Then we describe two case studies remarking the main parallel processing concepts and skills students can learn. In the first case study, we analyze two parallel algorithm models. In the second, we do some performance tests among parallel (reconfigurable) scheduling policies and architectures. Then, we analyze the performance through some metrics like response time, idle time etc. Finally we discuss and analyze the use of RJSSim for parallel processing learning. Our main contribution is: an implementation of RJSSim for parallel processing learning. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper presents an information systems architecture (ISA) model that comprises the integration of information systems, technology, business processes and users in public sector environment. The ISA model presented considers specific aspects of the public sector as well characteristics of information systems development and use in this sector found in the literature and in the studies realised in informatic services brazilian State public enterprises. The model proposed was structured with five components: (a) Government structure (mission and organisational culture, Planning and government platform);(b) Public services (considered the " business" of public structure, with the information for citizens, for top level and government administrative technical);(c) Information systems (by including the legacy systems and executives systems information);(d) Information technology (centred in investment policies and the government computational platforms-as micro-computer and mainframe relationship) and (e) Users (centred in the necessities for public-training, adaptation and use of the SI). The model proposed was submitted to validation from informatic services Brazilian State public enterprises. The results point out the relevance of the integrated vision of their components and they permit to establish strategies for implantation of ISA model, in order to observing public sector specificity.

THE NO FRAME CONCEPT - ITS IMPACT ON SHIPYARD COST

Nappi:graduated from City College of New York in 1954 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering and received his M.S. in civil engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1959. He began his professional career in 1954 at the New York Naval Shipyard as a naval architect (structures) performing detail structural design and fabrication studies for CVAs LPDs DDs and CGs and eventually became a supervisory naval architect (structures). From 1965 to 1973 he was a member of the staff of the Computer-Aided Design Division at the David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center (DTNSRDC). As such he was involved in the development of the computer structural design tool the SSDP (in association with Frank M. Lev) and automated detail design programs (CASDOS). His current position is Senior Naval Architect Consultant in the structural integrity group of the Ship Structures Division Structures Department DTNSRDC. Mr. Nappi is the author and co-author of numerous technical papers and reports covering a wide spectrum of topics such as automated structural design process design for producibility and survivability material weight and cost trade-off studies and structural weight determination for high performance ships (i.e. SES SWATH HYSWAS). He has lectured on the subjects of design for survivability and ship structures at the Naval Post Graduate School and MIT. He is a member of ASNE ASCE U.S. Naval Institute Sigma Xi and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York. Mr. Nappi was a member of the NAVSEA working commitee for the computer supported design planning effort and is currently a member of the DTNSRDC ASSET Advisory Committee. Ronald W. Walz:graduated in 1974 from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. He began his professional career in 1974 at the David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center as a structural engineer in the structural design concepts group of the Ship Structures Division Structures Department.

A proposed cost effective alternative to current U.S. Navy structurally configured hulls is presented in this paper. This proposed design for producibility concept involves the elimination of structural stanchions and transverse web frames. The potential impact of this “no frame” concept on structural design, weight and construction and material costs for naval surface frigates and destroyers is reflected in 1) reduced costs for the installation of distributive systems and 2) a reduced number and complexity of structural details providing a more reliable and less costly structure. This study was performed in three parts: 1) Determine the most feasible length between bulkheads without frames; 2) Using this length perform detail weight studies and construction and material costs analysis comparison on a 72-foot long hull module, with and without frames, for a FFG-7, and 3) Estimate the saving in man hours of labor on the installation of distributive systems and shipfitting for an FFG-7. For the feasible length studies on the “no frame” structural configuration, thirty-seven strength, weight and vertical center of gravity studies were performed on two ship classes; twenty-two on the FFG-7 class and fifteen on the DD-963 class. The detailed weight studies and construction and material cost analyses were conducted for FFG-7 “no frame” and “as built” modules. Results indicating the “no frame” concept module was 6.8% heavier and 14.8% less costly than the “as built” module. For the impact of an FFG-7 “no frame” structurally configured hull on the cost of labor required for the installation of distributive systems and for other functional work such as ship fitting, welding, and electrical, this study indicated a reduction of 169,206 labor hours per ship, representing 7.12% of the total required man hours to fabricate an FFG-7 class ship.
