Optimal Codes Correcting a Substring Edit

The substring edit error replaces a substring u of x with another string v, where the lengths of u and v are bounded by a given constant k. It encompasses localized insertions, deletions, and substitutions within a window. Codes correcting one substring edit have redundancy at least log n + k. In this paper, we construct codes correcting one substring edit with redundancy log n + Ok(log log n), which is almost optimal. We also study the average-case document-exchange problem under one substring edit and construct a hash with an expected length of approximately 2.log n + Ok(log log n) for any iid distribution for the documents. © 1963-2.12.IEEE.

Railway interlocking systems can be implemented as distributed systems, where each part of a station is handled by a separate logical unit. The logical units of such systems form a network and communicate by interchanging messages. Such distributed architectures are well known in large industrial control systems. There are several design practices and also algorithmic task partitioning methods that are applicable in distributed control systems. Some of such methods can also be adapted in designing of railway interlocking systems as well. In the case of such systems, the communication time between components must be kept low. Namely each separate controller in a given route must be able to exchange their internal state within a limited time in order to permit the train movement authorization. This limitation could cause high traffic load, if every logical unit would be interconnected with each other. Therefore, the main goal of the minimization is to reduce the number of connections between logical units. This can achieved by distributing and assigning the topological railway objects to certain logical units. © 2.2. Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved.

QoE-Aware Volumetric Video Caching and Rendering for Mobile Extended Reality Services

In this article, we propose a novel volumetric video caching and rendering approach for an edge-assisted extended reality (XR) system to enhance user Quality of Experience (QoE). Particularly, user QoE consists of visual quality and quality variation. Different quality of volumetric videos are required to be cached, rendered, and delivered to XR devices for different viewing distances within a time latency. Given the limited caching, computing, and communication resources on the edge server, we formulate a long-term user QoE maximization problem to jointly optimize video caching and rendering by considering user locations and viewing distances. To solve this problem, we first design an online optimization algorithm in which caching decisions are obtained using a regularization technique. We then develop a low-complexity binary search algorithm to determine optimal rendering quality. Extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms benchmark schemes by an average 46% improvement in terms of long-term user QoE. © 2.14 IEEE.

Adaptive Central Acceleration With Variance Control for Robust Federated Optimization in Ubiquitous Intelligence

Federated learning (FL) in Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT) environments faces critical challenges, including sparse client participation, non-IID local data distributions, and unreliable communication, which lead to slow convergence and high variance in global updates. To address these issues, we propose adaptive central federated momentum optimization (ACFMO), an optimization framework that enhances FL efficiency and stability under constrained participation. ACFMO integrates an adaptive central acceleration mechanism that dynamically adjusts momentum updates based on real-time client availability, preventing instability and ensuring smoother global model updates. Additionally, a variance-controlled local updating strategy refines client contributions, mitigating high variance caused by infrequent and heterogeneous updates. Extensive experiments across diverse FL scenarios demonstrate that ACFMO significantly accelerates convergence, reduces communication overhead, and improves model stability compared to state-of-the-art FL methods, making it particularly well-suited for real-world IIoT deployments where network and computational resources are constrained. © 2.14 IEEE.

Improved Control and Stability Analysis of a Microgrid Connector Controller Under Unbalanced Network Conditions

The microgrid connector controller has been shown to be a more cost-effective alternative for a microgrid-grid interface than a back-to-back connector. This paper proposes an improved control system for this controller under unbalanced operation, as distribution feeder and microgrid loads are normally unbalanced. The controller regulates the utility interface while minimizing the impact of load unbalancing on both the utility feeder and the microgrid. An improved reference current generation strategy is designed to suppress the fluctuations of the dc link voltage, thereby preventing them from being introduced into the control system and affecting the controller operation. Furthermore, a four-stage start-up strategy is proposed to avoid an external dc source for charging the controller’s dc link capacitor, making the interface more practical and cost-effective. The paper also presents a comprehensive investigation of the effects of the controller parameters and microgrid load unbalance on the small-perturbation stability of grid-connected microgrids. The performance of the presented controller is compared with its original controls, a back-to-back with existing unbalance control techniques, and a switch interface through detailed simulations in a benchmark test system. The results illustrate that the proposed controls can minimize the impact of feeder and microgrid unbalancing by eliminating the negative-sequence components and reducing the fluctuations in the transferred powers and dc link voltage, showing similar overall performance to a back-to-back interface. © 2.10-2.12.IEEE.

Flexible Low-Power Digital Circuits with Unipolar Amorphous Silicon Thin-Film Transistors

Thin-film transistor (TFT) technology has demonstrated its effectiveness in large-area cost-efficient applications such as displays, flexible electronics, and medical devices. However, TFTs are typically unipolar in nature, and therefore, the realization of CMOS-like digital circuits is challenging. Traditional methods for implementing logic gates and complex circuits with unipolar TFT devices lead to high static power consumption and limited output swing. While various mitigation techniques have been developed, they fail to eliminate the direct path current problem in these circuits, which hinders static power reduction. The objective of this study is to address these issues and study its effect on flexible substrate. In this article, we propose logic gates that address these issues using a half-latch circuit. To demonstrate the concept, a 3-to-8 decoder was built using only n-type amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) TFTs on both glass and flexible substrates. We analyzed the impact of bending and substrate materials on the design. It was observed that the TFTs show an increase in current up to 8% under tensile stress, while a decrease in current up to 4% under compressive stress on flexible substrate. Measurements indicate that the proposed design reduces the average total power consumption of the 3-to-8 decoder by 46.5% compared with state-of-the-art techniques under various conditions. © 2.2. High-Traversability and Precise Navigation for Mobile Robots in Constrained Environments

This paper presents an integrated sensing-planning navigation system for mobile robots used in industrial inspection. The system can be directly integrated with real robots. It enables the robot to pass through tight spaces, circumvent unexpected obstacles, and accurately reach the goal pose. This improves the robot’s adaptability to inspection tasks. For obstacle sensing, the system includes an obstacle parameterizer. Static obstacles in global grid map occupancy clusters are convexified. To improve the representation accuracy of the tight space, continuous and angled obstacles are automatically segmented into multiple convex polygons. This avoids inappropriate convex shapes. Unexpected obstacles in local grid maps are first represented by minimum bounding circles (MBCs) to simplify data association. They are then converted into inscribed convex polygons to ensure consistency with static obstacle descriptions. For motion planning, the system utilizes a two-stage planner operating on obstacle convex sets. When the robot is distant from the goal, the nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is constrained by inter-convex set discrete-time control barrier functions (DCBF-Convex), termed NMPC-DCBF-Convex, enabling effective navigation in tight spaces and around unexpected obstacles. As the robot nears the goal pose, DCBF-Convex conditions prune the sampling space of dynamic window approach (DWA), termed DWA-DCBF-Convex. It ensures high-frequency control and enables safe and precise arrival at the goal in constrained environments. Experiments in constrained scenarios validate the system’s real-world effectiveness. An inspection robot weighing over 70kg completes challenging navigation tasks at a maximum velocity of 0.5m/s, achieving an empirical terminal positional error of ±0.017m. © 2.01-2.12.IEEE.

A Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding Scheme for Hybrid Mobile Multi-hop Networks

Efficient data transmission across mobile multi-hop networks that connect edge devices to core servers presents significant challenges, particularly due to the variability in link qualities between wireless and wired segments. This variability necessitates a robust transmission scheme that transcends the limitations of existing deep joint source-channel coding (Deep-JSCC) strategies, which often struggle at the intersection of analog and digital methods. Addressing this need, this paper introduces a novel hybrid DeepJSCC framework, h-DJSCC, tailored for effective image transmission from edge devices through a network architecture that includes initial wireless transmission followed by multiple wired hops. Our approach harnesses the strengths of DeepJSCC for the initial, variable-quality wireless link to avoid the cliff effect inherent in purely digital schemes. For the subsequent wired hops, which feature more stable and high-capacity connections, we implement digital compression and forwarding techniques to prevent noise accumulation. This dual-mode strategy is adaptable even in scenarios with limited knowledge of the image distribution, enhancing the framework's robustness and utility. Extensive numerical simulations demonstrate that our hybrid solution outperforms traditional fully digital approaches by effectively managing transitions between different network segments and optimizing for variable signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We also introduce a fully adaptive h-DJSCC architecture with both SNR-adaptive (SA) and rate-adaptive (RA) modules capable of adjusting to different network conditions and achieving diverse rate-distortion objectives, thereby reducing the memory requirements on network nodes. © 1983-2.12.IEEE.

This paper presents the estimation of stability and control derivatives of an unmanned aircraft. The aerodynamics are described using regressors composed of velocity, angular rates, flow angles and control surface deflections. The flight data is generated from numerical simulation of postulated equations of motion describing the aerodynamics model. Least squares based on the equation error method is used to estimate the parameters representing the different force and moment aerodynamic coefficients. Statistical analysis is done on the estimates to determine the accuracy and adequacy of the estimates to describe the aerodynamic model. A dynamic simulation based on the identified aerodynamic model is used to improve the parameter estimates through regression of the errors between the flight data and the model response. The aircraft under consideration is a scaled Yak-54 fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle. © 2.2. Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved.
