Large-eddy simulation of airflow and heat transfer in a general ward of hospital

In this paper, a very popular alternative computational technique, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has been used for Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of airflow and heat transfer in general ward of hospital. Different Reynolds numbers have been used to study the airflow pattern. In LES, Smagorinsky turbulence model has been considered and a discussion has been conducted in brief. A code validation has been performed comparing the present results with benchmark results for lid-driven cavity problem and the results are found to agree very well. LBM is demonstrated through simulation in forced convection inside hospital ward with six beds with a partition in the middle, which acted like a wall. Changes in average rate of heat transfer in terms of average Nusselt numbers have also been recorded in tabular format and necessary comparison has been showed. It was found that partition narrowed the path for airflow and once the air overcame this barrier, it got free space and turbulence appeared. For higher turbulence, the average rate of heat transfer increased and patients near the turbulence zone released maximum heat and felt more comfortable.

Emerging technologies for improving embryo selection: a systematic review

Background: Embryo selection procedure is one of the critical success factors in in vitro fertilization treatment. Various embryo selection technologies have emerged within the past decade. These technologies are either used in combination with morphology or introduced to replace the conventional morphological evaluation. This review aims at investigating the effect of these novel embryo selection technologies on in vitro fertilization success rates. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed among full-text English articles in the PubMed database. Study selection was based on the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Clinical effectiveness of the selected studies was measured in terms of implantation, pregnancy, live birth, and multiple pregnancy rates. Results: Five studies were identified that fitted the inclusion criteria. In these studies, researchers used aneuploidy screening, metabolomic profiling, and time-lapse imaging analysis as the new technologies. Among these studies, the one that conducted a randomized controlled trial of a commercial time-lapse imaging system demonstrated significant improvement in implantation rate. Conclusion: Studies using emerging technologies for embryo assessment provide promising results in retrospective analysis. On the other hand, randomized controlled trial studies that test the efficacy of novel embryo selection techniques in clinical practice failed to demonstrate a consistent improvement in the resulting success rates. This review provides a snapshot of the most recent literature on embryo assessment and embryo selection studies. Our findings show that there is a lack of comparative measurements and analyses that are able to assess benefits of the novel technologies in the field of embryo selection.

A two warehouse inventory model with quadratic decreasing demand and time dependent holding cost

An inventory model with time dependent deterioration and quadratically decreasing demand rate under the two warehouses system is proposed. In market some constraints such as demand, deteriorating costs and holding costs fluctuate with their true values. So, the constraints are not precise to be fixed. Solving these sorts of uncertainties we assumed in this paper quadratic decreasing demand rate, linear holding costs, linear deteriorations are assumed in the both warehouses. Finally, we determined the optimum inventory cost and optimum inventory level. Numerical example is presented to exemplify the inventory model and shows the sensitivity effects of parameters on the optimal solution.

Feature extraction methods for batik pattern recognition: A review

Batik is one of the world’s cultural heritages with various decorative patterns. Each batik has its unique pattern characteristic such as color intensity, ornament visualisation and ornament size. Batik with a large-sized ornament and a high-intensity color on its background will result in a clear edge and easy-to-recognise ornaments. While batik with a small-sized ornament and a low-intensity color of the background will produce slight edge ornaments, thus it becomes difficult to recognise. In order to recognise any patterns of batik, some features that can represent each pattern are becomes necessary. Batik pattern features can be obtained from various methods of feature extraction. This paper will address various methods of feature extraction of batik for recognising batik patterns. These methods of feature extraction are categorised into several groups based on visual features produced by batik including feature extraction of color, texture formed in batik, and shape of batik ornament. The grouping of extraction methods in batik aims to describe the methods for extracting features from batik pattern to improve the recognition level of batik pattern.

A cellular automata based FPGA realization of a new metaheuristic bat-inspired algorithm

Optimization algorithms are often inspired by processes occuring in nature, such as animal behavioral patterns. The main concern with implementing such algorithms in software is the large amounts of processing power they require. In contrast to software code, that can only perform calculations in a serial manner, an implementation in hardware, exploiting the inherent parallelism of single-purpose processors, can prove to be much more efficient both in speed and energy consumption. Furthermore, the use of Cellular Automata (CA) in such an implementation would be efficient both as a model for natural processes, as well as a computational paradigm implemented well on hardware. In this paper, we propose a VHDL implementation of a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the echolocation behavior of bats. More specifically, the CA model is inspired by the metaheuristic algorithm proposed earlier in the literature, which could be considered at least as efficient than other existing optimization algorithms. The function of the FPGA implementation of our algorithm is explained in full detail and results of our simulations are also demonstrated.

Accelerating a three-dimensional eco-hydrological cellular automaton on GPGPU with OpenCL

This work presents an effective implementation of a numerical model for complete eco-hydrological Cellular Automata modeling on Graphical Processing Units (GPU) with OpenCL (Open Computing Language) for heterogeneous computation (i.e., on CPUs and/or GPUs). Different types of parallel implementations were carried out (e.g., use of fast local memory, loop unrolling, etc), showing increasing performance improvements in terms of speedup, adopting also some original optimizations strategies. Moreover, numerical analysis of results (i.e., comparison of CPU and GPU outcomes in terms of rounding errors) have proven to be satisfactory. Experiments were carried out on a workstation with two CPUs (Intel Xeon E5440 at 2.83GHz), one GPU AMD R9 280X and one GPU nVIDIA Tesla K20c. Results have been extremely positive, but further testing should be performed to assess the functionality of the adopted strategies on other complete models and their ability to fruitfully exploit parallel systems resources.

Economic emission dispatch (EED) problems are one of the most crucial problems in power systems. Growing energy demand, limitation of natural resources and global warming make this topic into the center of discussion and research. This paper reviews the use of Quantum Computational Intelligence (QCI) in solving Economic Emission Dispatch problems. QCI techniques like Quantum Genetic Algorithm (QGA) and Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) algorithm are discussed here. This paper will encourage the researcher to use more QCI based algorithm to get better optimal result for solving EED problems.
