In Vitro Immersion Behavior of Cold Sprayed Hydroxyapatite/Titanium Composite Coatings

In previous study, dense and homogenous 20wt% HAP/Ti composite coatings were successfully deposited on Ti substrates by cold gas dynamic spray technique. The results revealed that the phase composition of the HAP in the deposit is identical to that of the precursor powder and the bonding strength of the deposit is comparable/better to that of the plasma sprayed HAP. A relatively higher corrosion current of HAP/Ti composite than that of pure Ti coating in simulated body fluid indicates a good bioactivity for composite coating. In the present study, in vitro immersion test is carried out for various period of time and the formation of apatite layer on surface of composite coating proves the good bioactivity of the composite coating further. The cold sprayed HAP/Ti composite can be anticipated to be a promising load-bearing implant material for biomedical applications.

Vibrato is a fundamental feature of many musical sounds, with vocal, stringed instrument, and many wind instrumental performances employing vibrato as a principal device for conveying musical expression. In this paper, we describe a signal processing toolbox for extracting and analyzing vibrato-related parameters from audio recordings. In our method, sonic partials of a musical sound are separated first, followed by tracking of the instantaneous amplitude and frequency of each partial. A number of parameters that characterize vibrato can then be extracted from the tracked partials; these include the common frequency of the amplitude modulation (AM) and the frequency modulation (FM), the modulation depths, the relative phase between the AM and FM components of each partial, and the harmonic contents of the modulation components. This then enables a detailed comparison of the vibrato of various musical sounds, for example the relative amounts of AM and FM, the rate of vibrato, the correlation and phase between AM and FM vibrato components, and many other features. This framework provides a useful tool for applications such as music performance pedagogy and musicological studies.

MEMS 3-DoF gyroscope design, modeling and simulation through equivalent circuit lumped parameter model

Pre-fabrication, behavioural and performance analysis with computer aided design (CAD) tools is a common and fabrication cost effective practice. In light of this we present a simulation methodology for a dual-mass oscillator based 3 Degree of Freedom (3-DoF) MEMS gyroscope. 3-DoF Gyroscope is modeled through lumped parameter models using equivalent circuit elements. These equivalent circuits consist of elementary components which are counterpart of their respective mechanical components, used to design and fabricate 3-DoF MEMS gyroscope. Complete designing of equivalent circuit model, mathematical modeling and simulation are being presented in this paper. Behaviors of the equivalent lumped models derived for the proposed device design are simulated in MEMSPRO T-SPICE software. Simulations are carried out with the design specifications following design rules of the MetalMUMPS fabrication process. Drive mass resonant frequencies simulated by this technique are 1.59 kHz and 2.05 kHz respectively, which are close to the resonant frequencies found by the analytical formulation of the gyroscope. The lumped equivalent circuit modeling technique proved to be a time efficient modeling technique for the analysis of complex MEMS devices like 3-DoF gyroscopes. The technique proves to be an alternative approach to the complex and time consuming couple field analysis Finite Element Analysis (FEA) previously used.

Polyaniline-copper oxide composite: A high performance shield against electromagnetic pollution

This work reports the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of polyaniline-copper oxide PAni/CuO composites prepared by in-situ emulsion polymerization. The shielding measurements have been carried out in the microwave frequency range of 8 to 12 GHz (X-band). The composites showed total EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of −32 to −37.3 dB (> 99.99 % attenuation) with higher dielectric loss (ε″) in the range of 142 to 165, indicating their potential as high performance shield throughout the X-band. The results indicate that the electromagnetic properties of the composites depend on the content of CuO in PAni matrix.

The effects of high energy ions on the electrical characteristics of silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors (SiGe HBTs) were studied in the total dose of ranging from 600 krad to 100 Mrad (Si). The two generations (50 GHz and 200 GHz) of SiGe HBTs were exposed to 50 MeV lithium, 75 MeV boron and 100 MeV oxygen ions. The electrical characteristics of SiGe HBTs were studied before and after irradiation. The SiGe HBTs were exposed to 60Co gamma radiation in the same total dose. The results are systematically compared in order to understand the interaction of ions and ionizing radiation with SiGe HBTs.

In this paper we have shown how to monitor the water level of water systems such as water tanks, rivers, ground water table, and bore wells remotely. We have also shown that how to control the working of pump automatically and remotely. It can also be used to remotely monitor the flood areas wirelessly and information can be sent to mobile wirelessly. This project is designed to monitor the water level with the help of water level sensors, Zigbee 802.15.4, 74HC14 inverter and GSM technology. Furthermore, it can monitor the quality of water with the help of water quality sensors such as turbidity sensor and dissolved oxygen sensor. In this monitoring system, sensors monitor the water level, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature and pH level of the water at some predefined sensing interval. This approach would help in reducing the water overflow and home power consumption. © 2013 IEEE.

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), is the primary vector of a bacterium that causes huanglongbing, a devastating disease of citrus in Florida. Efficient trapping of ACP at low population densities is important for timely pest management decisions. To improve trapping efficiency, there has been interest in coopting the vibrational communication/mating system of this insect. ACP males find mates on tree branches by producing vibrational calls that elicit duetting replies from receptive females. The males then search and continue duetting to locate the replies. To interfere with the duetting process, a device was constructed that incorporates a contact microphone to detect vibrational signals, a microcontroller platform with signal detection and background noise discrimination software, and a piezoelectric buzzer to produce mimics of female reply vibrations. The mimics, produced immediately after a call is detected, stimulate the male to search and find the source of the reply. This report describes the components and operation of the platform and its use in development of methods to interfere with the duetting process and disrupt mating. The objective of these studies is to develop field-worthy systems that target ACP infestations and reduce their populations.

There exist numerous sophisticated models and methods for estimating the size, cost and schedule of software projects. However, the ability to accurately predict the software cost of web based software for agile software projects is still dubious. The most appropriate web based software cost estimation in an agile software development environment is a big problem due to varying levels of customer requirement and different individual personnel capabilities. Also, the need to develop a separate model to estimate web based project is rising. In this research paper, we present AgileMOW, an approach to model a software cost estimation process which will evaluate effort and cost of software development for web based projects developed using Agile methodology with a number of constraints imposed by stakeholders and environmental characteristics, thereby satisfying multitudinous criteria by making use of COCOMO II model, a famous traditional algorithmic technique. Most importantly, the paper identifies the difference between conventional and web projects. The proposed estimation model enhances the level of visibility in the planning stages.

An Economic Phase-Mdulation to Intensity-Modulation Converter

A novel phase-modulation to intensity-modulation (PM-to-IM) converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated basing on a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). Comparing with the published schemes, in which the employed DI, FBG, OBPF or dispersion devices can only process a certain phase-modulated RF signal, the proposed scheme can achieve the conversion process in an economic and resourceful manner. To be the first one of achieving such PM-to-IM conversion process by a VCSEL, the feasibility of the proposal is experimentally demonstrated with an open eye diagram when it is employed to convert phase-modulated RF signal.
