Chronic back pain can present a serious health concern, with symptoms that can significantly affect an individual's well-being, mobility, and overall quality of life over an extended period. While chronic back pain may manifest suddenly in some cases, it often develops gradually and persists for weeks, and in untreated cases, it can linger for years. Hence, the utilization of assistive devices such as wearable posture-monitoring vests can offer valuable assistance and guidance to users. This research paper is dedicated to the development of a system for detecting, diagnosing, and correcting poor posture, specifically leaning posture. The vest is designed to provide users with visual, auditory, and tactile cues to help them address this issue, thereby reducing the risk associated with leaning. Additionally, an integrated electrical box has been designed to consolidate all components directly onto the main board in a secure enclosure. This box also displays the daily count of instances where the user has leaned. This system is characterized by its electrical safety, portability, compactness, comfort, and affordability. A comprehensive analysis of the system's performance has been conducted with a meticulous evaluation of accuracy. Each component of the system has undergone successful testing, and the system as a whole is currently in the testing phase. The results of these tests have indicated a lack of faulty errors and have demonstrated outstanding accuracy and detection rates. Over 100 individuals of varying ages, genders, and BMI categories were involved in testing, with each person wearing the device for an average of six hours. The accuracy rate achieved was 98.85%, with an average of 54.35 instances of poor posture detected per participant. © 2023 IEEE.

The Effects of Heating Methods on Infrared Thermography

Infrared (IR) Thermography is a good way of detecting air filled defects in FRP decks. When heat is applied to the deck surface, the material over the air void heats up faster and becomes hotter than the surrounding area and an IR camera can distinguish this defective area from a sound area in the deck based on surface temperature measurements. Since this technique requires application of heat in order to produce results, it seems only logical that one should research the effects of different heating types on the defect analysis. For this study, various heat sources; such as the sun, a 5000 BTU quartz electric heater, a 9000 BTU propane convection heater, and a 35000 BTU forced air propane heater, were used to heat up an FRP deck specimen with built‐in defects for IR analysis. Different heating times were used to determine the effects on the accuracy and the total elapsed time involved in seeing a defect in the resultant IR images. A few methods, such as CO2 cooling, for decreasing the time it takes to see the defect in the image were also explored.

Microwave nondestructive testing and evaluation of surface‐breaking and internal cracks in cement‐based materials, employing open‐ended rectangular waveguide probes, has the potential to be a viable approach for the purpose of structural health monitoring. This paper presents an empirical model for simulating crack characteristic signal (signal reflected by a cracked sample under test as a function of scanning distance) given the dielectric property of the material, crack dimensions, probe aperture dimensions, operating frequency and the standoff distance.

The essence of embodiment: A framework for understanding and exploiting structural coupling between system and environment

A framework for understanding and exploiting embodiment is presented which is not dependent on any specific ontological context. This framework is founded on a new definition of embodiment, based on the relational dynamics that exist between biological organisms and their environments, and inspired by the structural dynamics of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The definition draws on the idea of mutual perturbation between a system (biological organism, robot, or software agent) and its environment, enabling structural coupling between the two. The framework provides a vocabulary and concepts that can be used to discuss and analyze embodiment in any kind of environment, not just the material world. Rather than blurring boundaries between disciplines and domains, this permits the characterization of distinctions and common features between them, in a manner meaningful to all parties. Other benefits include the potential quantification of embodiment, and access to practical and theoretical ideas associated with material embodiment for those working with non-material systems. The relational embodiment definition is illustrated by ongoing experimental work in which the relational dynamics that exist between E. coli and its environment are applied in a variety of environments, both software and material, using a Cellular Automata-based system with artificial ‘sensory’ and ‘effector’ surfaces. This experimental system is also used to outline a biologically grounded, dynamical systems-based approach to the generation of behavior in a variety of operational environments, exploiting features of the embodiment framework presented.

Unsupervised Hebbian learning in neural networks

In this paper, a survey of a particular class of unsupervised learning rules for neural networks is presented. These learning rules are based on variants of Hebbian correlation learning to update the connection weights of two-layer network architectures consisting of an input layer with n units and an output layer with m units. It will be demonstrated that the networks are able to perform a variety of important data analysis tasks, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Minor Component Analysis (MCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA).

The MEMS Loop Heat Pipe Based on Coherent Porous Silicon — The Modified System Test Structure

The previous papers presented at STAIF 2002 and STAIF 2003 discussed the design, fabrication and characterization of the evaporator section and the initial test cell of a planar MEMS loop heat pipe based upon coherent porous silicon or “CPS” technology. The potentially revolutionary advantage of CPS technology is that it is planar and allows for pores or capillaries of absolutely uniform diameter. Coherent porous silicon can be mass‐produced by various MEMS fabrication techniques. The preliminary experiments made with the original test structure exhibited the desired temperature and pressure differences, but these differences were extremely small and oscillatory. This paper describes modifications made to the initial test cell design, which were intended to improve its evacuated, closed loop performance. Included among these changes were the redesign of the compensation chamber and condenser, an increase in the porosity of the coherent porous silicon wick, the fabrication of silicon top “hot” plates with an increased depth of the vapor reservoir and the integration of metal resistive heater elements onto the backside of the top plates to simulate the input heat. Some changes were made in the test sequence to produce more discernable differences in temperatures and pressures. The most recent results of the tests made with the modified system will be presented.

A Sphere Detection Based Adaptive MIMO Detection Algorithm for LTE-A System

An adaptive MIMO detection algorithm for LTE-A system which is based on sphere detection is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm uses M-algorithm for reference to remove unreliable constellation candidates before search, and the number of constellation reservation is adaptively adjusted according to SNR. Simulations of LTE-A downlink show that the BER performance of the proposed detection algorithm is nearly the same as maximum likelihood (ML) detection algorithm. However, the complexity is reduced by about 30% compared with full constellation sphere detection.

We review classic results and recent progress on equilibrium analysis, dynamics, and optimal interventions in network games with both continuous and discrete strategy sets. We study strategic interactions in deterministic networks as well as networks generated from a stochastic network formation model. For the former case, we review a unifying framework for analysis based on the theory of variational inequalities. For the latter case, we highlight how knowledge of the stochastic network formation model can be used by a central planner to design interventions for large networks in a computationally efficient manner when exact network data are not available.

Active Thermography for the Detection of Defects in Powder Metallurgy Compacts

Active thermography is an established NDE technique that has become the method of choice in many industrial applications which require non‐contact access to the parts under test. Unfortunately, when conducting on‐line infrared (IR) inspection of powder metallic compacts, complications can arise due the generally low emissivity of metals and the thermally noisy environment typically encountered in manufacturing plants. In this paper we present results of an investigation that explores the suitability of active IR imaging of powder metallurgy compacts for the detection of surface and sub‐surface defects in the pre‐sinter state and in an on‐line manufacturing setting to ensure complete quality assurance. Additional off‐line tests can be carried out for statistical quality analyses. In this research, the IR imaging of sub‐surface defects is based on a transient instrumentation approach that relies on an electric control system which synchronizes and monitors the thermal response due to an electrically generated heat source. Preliminary testing reveals that this newly developed pulsed thermography system can be employed for the detection of subsurface defects in green‐state parts. Practical measurements agree well with theoretical predictions. The inspection approach being developed can be used for the testing of green‐state compacts as they exit the compaction press at speeds of up to 1,000 parts per hour.

Coherent Soft X‐ray Branchline at the Advanced Light Source

A new coherent soft X‐ray branchline at the advanced light source has begun operation. Using the third harmonic from an 8 cm period undulator, this branch delivers coherent soft x‐rays ranging from 200eV to 1000eV. Here the beamline layout and Airy patterns generated by single pinhole diffraction at 500 eV and 600 eV are presented.
