Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are capable of operating at high speeds and high loads. The large back EMF results in the excitation winding current being demagnetized more slowly, which, in turn, reduces the efficiency and output of the motor system. This study proposes a novel individually demagnetization power converter (IDPC) specifically designed for SRMs to effectively use the demagnetization energy through an independent demagnetization circuit. Compared with traditional converters, the IDPC can accept direct current (dc) and high-frequency ac inputs while achieving fast demagnetization and energy recovery. The topology and working principle of the IDPC are analyzed in detail in this article using a three-phase 12/8 SRM as the research object. In addition, the influence of the winding demagnetization voltage on the negative torque during the demagnetization phase was studied, as well as the functional implementation and logic control strategy of the IDPC. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed topology and high-frequency ac drive characteristics, as well as their advantages in terms of efficiency, output capacity, and dynamic performance. © 2015 IEEE.

Origami, derived from the Japanese words \enquote*{ori} meaning fold and \enquote*{kami (gami)} meaning paper, has found extensive engineering applications in modern days. In the last decade, an emerging venue lies in robotics, where origami is taken as an exoskeleton of a robot to generate desired behaviours. The motions of origami are often coupled through in-built folds, leading to lower or more controllable degrees of freedom (DoFs) while still exhibiting shape-changing properties akin to those of soft materials. This unique feature enhances the compliance of robots without compromising their controllability. The prevalent use of zero-thickness sheets makes origami robots prone to fatigue, necessitating the incorporation of origami made from durable thick materials. Whilst substantial attempts have been made in the field of thick-panel origami, the concept was originally conceived for space solar panels. Hence, existing research predominantly focuses on properties such as flat foldability and kinematic equivalence. Consequently, many designs also end up with rigid panels of non-uniform thicknesses, complicating the fabrication process. As a result, roboticists, who are interested in shape-changing origami as well as its fabrication and control simplicity, often find it challenging to directly implement those thick panels in the robotic design. This work addresses these research gaps by introducing the first systematic approach to designing uniform-thickness origami capable of shape-changing, referred to as morphing surfaces. Such surfaces are enabled by a comprehensive mapping between thick-panel origami and spatial overconstrained linkages, followed by various tessellation methods. Bending, expanding, twisting, and complex motion behaviours will be realised on the proposed surfaces, all with a single DoF. The surfaces are thus readily applicable in robotics for targeted functions. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Tactile sensors, which provide information about the physical properties of objects, are an essential component of robotic systems. The visuotactile sensing technology with the merits of high resolution and low cost has facilitated the development of robotics from environment exploration to dexterous operation. Over the years, several reviews on visuotactile sensors for robots have been presented, but few of them discussed the significance of signal processing methods to visuotactile sensors. Apart from ingenious hardware design, the full potential of the sensory system toward designated tasks can only be released with the appropriate signal processing methods. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of visuotactile sensors from the perspective of signal processing methods and outlooks possible future research directions for visuotactile sensors. Electrospinning has exhibited excellent benefits to treat the trauma for tissue engineering due to its produced micro/nano fibrous structure. It can effectively adhere to the tissue surface for long-term continuous therapy. This paper develops a robotic electrospinning platform for endoluminal therapy. The platform consists of a continuum manipulator, the electrospinning device, and the actuation unit. The continuum manipulator has two bending sections to facilitate the steering of the tip needle for a controllable spinning direction. Non-circular joint profile is carefully designed to enable a constant length of the centreline of a continuum manipulator for stable fluid transmission inside it. Experiments are performed on a bronchus phantom, and the steering ability and bending limitation in each direction are also investigated. The endoluminal electrospinning is also fulfilled by a trajectory following and points targeting experiments. The effective adhesive area of the produced fibre is also illustrated. The proposed robotic electrospinning shows its feasibility to precisely spread more therapeutic drug to construct fibrous structure for potential endoluminal treatments. © 2021 IEEE

Aluminium Matrix Composites are used in many engineering applications and are extensively used in automotive and aerospace applications. The reason behind is thermal stability, corrosion resistance, stiffness, strength and fatigue life of the Metal Matrix Composites are superior. The resulting properties of the composite is influenced by uniform dispersion of reinforcements within the matrix material which is one of the critical tasks during fabrication. Variety of techniques are available for fabricating composites namely stir casting, squeeze casting, vacuum casting, power metallurgy and similar methods are available. This article focuses specifically on different liquid manufacturing techniques. The mechanical, wear and morphological studies are discussed.

This paper presents a novel technique to classify the flow regimes in bubble columns. The ultrasonic velocity profiler is employed to detect the velocity deviation and echo characteristic of bubbles rising in the column. This information is set as attribute data for the machine learning algorithm. Classification-based machine learning is utilized to classify the flow regimes: bubbly, transition, and churn turbulent, which are defined as categories of the algorithm. Several classifiers were applied in this work, such as K-nearest neighbors, Decision tree, Support vector machines, Naive bayes, and Logical regression. The experimental demonstration was conducted to verify the performance of the proposed technique. Three kinds of two-phase flow with stagnant liquid that had various viscosities were used for the experiment. The air within the superficial velocity range was injected to alter the flow regime. The flow regime classification model was set. The proposed method was applicable to identify the flow regimes. The classifiers were tested, and their accuracy was evaluated. © 2024 The Authors

This paper presents a novel design for morphing mechanisms that combine the passive lockable reconfigurable variable geometry truss manipulator (VGTM) and the active parallel compliant mechanism. The structure of the VGTM is in a parallel-serial structure and its shape can be fully controlled just by using two active panels. This mechanism is suitable for the aerospace application due to its light, compact structure, load-carrying ability and can achieve multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) deformation. The mobility and topological configuration of the mechanism are thoroughly analyzed. To make the moving process simple and efficient, a control strategy combining the approximate motion mode and the precise motion modes was proposed. The kinematic models for the multi-step motion are established and all solved analytically. At last, a prototype was fabricated to show the structure and the application on morphing wings. Modified grain refinement influences much enriched properties in Aluminum Metal Matrix composite materials. This paper is analyzed the heat treatment which causes major changes in the eutectic matrix with reinforcement. Wide range of researches are available on the heat treatment of alloy materials, have been reviewed. Even though the microporosity in unavoidable, modified microstructure reveals that spherodization rate of eutectic silicon (Mg2Si) particles are more than ordinary as cast samples. The extent of structural change shows that some parameters like mean diameter, globular shape particles count and secondary dendrite arm spacing are strongly influenced the functional behavior of the material. This research paper investigates the microstructure refinement of Al-Si alloys with various heat treatment holding time.

Any health issue associated with a digestive system can be considered to be a digestive disorder. The symptoms of digestive disorders may vary from person to person. Common symptoms listed in digestive disorder cases include abdominal discomfort, vomiting, nausea, acid reflux, fatigue, diarrhea, fatigue, constipation, fecal incontinence, loss of appetite etc. Medical field follows various methods in diagnosing and analyzing digestive disorders. These methods includeboth invasive and non-invasive techniques. Among these Electrogastrogram is considered as a non-invasive and cost- effective method to plot the record of the electrical signals associated with the smooth muscles in the digestive system. This paper is mainly a review on electrogastrogram recording and its analyzing methods to identify its contributions for clinical purpose.
