Effect of channel shapes on fluid flow and heat transfer in microchannel - A numerical study

Increase in applications of micro devices in MEMS and NEMS, demands efficient cooling systems. Due to miniaturization, the conventional cooling systems fail to satisfy the required cooling performance. Therefore design and analyses of optimized cooling system for different micro devices are required for its better performance. The present work investigates the conjugate heat transfer analysis in selected configurations of microchannels (rectangular, circular and trapezoidal with two configurations) with water as coolant. Three dimensional numerical simulations were performed using commercially available package ANSYS FLUENT 18.1. This work proposes a way to analyse the conjugate heat transfer properties in different microchannels cross sections. The steady state three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out for single phase forced convection laminar flow. The present analyses focus on comparative study of heat transfer characteristics in different shape of the channels. The dimensions of microchannels were chosen by considering hydraulic diameter as constant in different geometrical shapes. The inlet velocities were varied as 1m/s, 1.5m/s, 2m/s, 2.25m/s, 2.5m/s and parameters such as Nusselt number, pressure drop and outlet temperature at constant heat input were determined and compared. It is revealed that geometrical shapes of microchannels have significant effects in the heat transfer characteristics.

This research is aimed at improving electric power supply reliability at major industrial plants by applying schematic design solutions. The authors analyzed the features of branch electric power distribution systems at a metallurgical plant; considered options of their revamping to improve reliability of electric power supply; carried out experimental research on splitting 110 kV meshed system at the integrated iron and steel works. When performing the research, mathematical simulation methods and full-scale experiment methods were used. Following the research, we proposed three options to revamp the power grid at the industrial plant applying schematic design solutions: Scheme A - separating substations, causing problems, in an individual block; Scheme B - separating independent 110 kV closed electric power grids; Scheme C – splitting the meshed system into two independent circuits. It is proved that the most efficient solution is Scheme C, which is characterized by a lower number of unscheduled downtimes of the facilities by mitigating the effects of faults in one of meshed systems on a continuous operation of shops powered from the neighboring grid; eliminated risks of simultaneous stops of all or the majority of metallurgical shops of the works during short circuits in 110 kV grids; and a considerable reduction in short circuit currents and active losses in 110 kV industrial grids. An aggregate benefit from the proposed measures aimed at revamping of the electrical grid of metallurgical units by applying schematic design solutions is over USD750,000/year.

The ability of modeling and predicting vehicle motion activities is important for automated vehicles. In this paper, we propose an And-Or Graph based model to give a simple and clear description of motion activities. Compared to other models, this new model relaxes the Markov property requirement in transition between activities and is thus more flexible. The parameters of this model can be easily learned from data. Using the trained new model, we can predict the on-going motion activity label and its corresponding probability. Experiments show that a high prediction accuracy (97%) can be achieved by this new model. © 2018 IEEE.

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Oscillations of atmospheric muon and electron neutrinos produce tau neutrinos with energies in the GeV range, which can be observed by the ORCA detector of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. First measurements with ORCA6, an early subarray corresponding to about 5% of the final detector, are presented. A sample of 5828 neutrino candidates has been selected from the analysed exposure of 433 kton-years. The ντ normalisation, defined as the ratio between the number of observed and expected tau neutrino events, is measured to be Sτ = 0.48+0−0.335 . This translates into a ντ charged-current cross section measurement of στmeas = (2.5+2−1.68) × 10−38 cm2 nucleon−1 at the median ντ energy of 20.3 GeV. The result is consistent with the measurements of other experiments. In addition, the current limit on the non-unitarity parameter affecting the τ-row of the neutrino mixing matrix was improved, with α33 > 0.95 at the 95% confidence level. The KM3NeT Collaboration has tackled a common challenge faced by the astroparticle physics community, namely adapting the experiment-specific simulation software to work with the CORSIKA air shower simulation output. The proposed solution is an extension of the open source code gSeaGen, which allows the transport of muons generated by CORSIKA to a detector of any size at an arbitrary depth. The gSeaGen code was not only extended in terms of functionality but also underwent a thorough redesign of the muon propagation routine, resulting in a more accurate and efficient simulation. This paper presents the capabilities of the new gSeaGen code as well as prospects for further developments. The challenges in this work included interfacing the CORSIKA binary output, efficient handling of already generated events to reduce the overall computational cost, and preserving all the additional available information, which can be invaluable in physics analyses. Solution method: The readout of CORSIKA simulation was adapted from the base script provided together with CORSIKA and implemented as a standalone flux driver in gSeaGen. The propagation routine has been redesigned to support the geometry of extensive air shower simulations and to improve its efficiency in propagating particles to the detector. This paper considers the problem of distributed leader-follower formation control for nonholonomic mobile robots only using local interactions among the robots. First, a distributed estimation strategy is presented for each follower robot to estimate the leader’s state. Then the dynamic equations of the formation tracking errors are formulated and a distributed formation control scheme is designed, which yields globally uniformly ultimately bounded stability for the closed-loop systems without requiring persistent excitation conditions. Finally, a simulation example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In the paper, the model and method of synthesizing quasi-time optimal control laws for Two Degree of Freedom (2-DOF) Robotic Arms are presented. 2-DOF Robotic Arms is a non-linear MIMO System with large nonlinear characteristics and uncertain parameters. In this design method, it is necessary to convert the MIMO system to the SISO system, in which each SISO system is guaranteed in Jordan form, followed by using the conversion system in the form of quasi-time optimal equation. By this method, the control law ensures a stable global Robotic Arm. In addition, the control law also ensures that the Robotic Arm System has a quick response of time, but also ensures a stable and robust system when changing parameters and impact noise. The simulation results on the 2-DOF Robotic Arm show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In the era of precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters, it is necessary for experiments to disentangle discrepancies that may indicate physics beyond the Standard Model in the neutrino sector. KM3NeT/ORCA is a water Cherenkov neutrino detector under construction and anchored at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The detector is designed to study the oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos and determine the neutrino mass ordering. This paper focuses on the initial configuration of ORCA, referred to as ORCA6, which comprises six out of the foreseen 115 detection units of photosensors. A high-purity neutrino sample was extracted during 2020 and 2021, corresponding to an exposure of 433 kton-years. This sample is analysed following a binned log-likelihood approach to search for invisible neutrino decay, in a three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state ν3 decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino. The resulting best fit of the invisible neutrino decay parameter is (formula presented), corresponding to a scenario with θ23 in the second octant and normal neutrino mass ordering.
