Human activities have caused concerns over the contamination of trace elements in aquatic systems due to their toxicity, long-lasting nature, and ability to accumulate in living organisms. This study evaluated the spatial pattern, environmental hazard, and potential health hazard of 13 trace metals in water and sediment samples collected from the Johor River basin using multivariate statistical techniques in order to identify the impact of both natural and human-related factors on the presence of trace metals in the area. The increased levels of metals in Station S1 indicated a significant impact from municipal, domestic, and industrial waste. The Geo-accumulation Index (I_geo) values for pollution and ecological indices in the sediment of the Johor River Basin ranged from -9.44 to 6.27. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values ranged from 0.05 to 0.18, and the Potential Ecological Risk Assessment (RI) values ranged from 2.15 to 11.18. These results indicate that the sediments in the Johor River Basin have a low risk of contamination from trace metals. The water's hazard quotient (HQ) had an average value of 0.0001, while the hazard index (HI) had an average value of 0.0003. It is important to increase stakeholders' understanding and concerns regarding the potential long-term human health and ecological implications associated with trace metals in Johor River water. The results of this study offer essential initial information for government entities to implement sustainable management strategies, reducing the likelihood of future trace metal contamination issues in the Johor River basin and similar regions. © 2024 European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences

This study proposes a new approach, a communal-based domestic rainwater harvesting (CDRWH) system, which is a new model that combines domestic and communal rainwater harvesting systems. This model is an alternative solution to improve system performance and utilize rainwater overflow from the system. Rainwater runoff from several domestic tanks is channeled to a communal tank to be collected, processed, and redistributed to needy domestic tanks. Overflow from the communal tank is used for groundwater recharge. The CDRWH system model aims to increase water supply, reduce runoff, and conserve groundwater. The model simulation uses daily water balance analysis and yield before spillage algorithm. The simulation scenario uses variations in roof area, number of house occupants, storage tank volume, and rainfall categories: 20 years, wet year, normal year, and dry year. Jagakarsa, an urban area in South Jakarta, was selected for the CDRWH system modeling. The results showed that the CDRWH model significantly improved the performance of the volumetric reliability (VR) and time reliability (TR) systems. In addition, the model could show a comparison of total groundwater recharge (GWR) and groundwater extraction (GWE), where the GWR capacity was higher. This allows centralized rainwater management in communal tanks, thereby reducing groundwater usage. The design of this model is simple. Therefore it can be easily duplicated for application in other locations. © 2025 The Authors

Jagakarsa is an urban area in South Jakarta, Indonesia, that uses groundwater for raw water because there are no clean water supply facilities. The significant increase in the need for clean water due to increasing urbanization threatens groundwater availability to maintain the balance of the surrounding environment. Natural conditions with a deep layer of clay and a dense built environment further increase runoff capacity because water has difficulty seeping into the soil. The intense extraction of groundwater without balancing groundwater recharge results in land subsidence. Until now, there has been no research on this issue. Thus, our research is necessary. This research aims to assess the potential of groundwater infiltration areas in Jagakarsa. Due to limited data, as a first step, we used a qualitative model with MCDM analysis (AHP and MIF methods) integrated with GIS to map potential groundwater recharge areas. The AHP method is explained in detail with a matrix system formula, readers can understand the calculation steps more easily. This study uses five influencing factors: geological formation, land use, slope, rainfall, and soil type. The results show that most study locations have low potential (AHP 74.49 % and MIF 75.25 %) for groundwater recharge. This groundwater recharge potential map was validated using groundwater level measurements. The accuracy of the AHP is 74.51 %, and the MIF method reaches 75.26 %. Therefore, further research is needed to obtain appropriate and effective technology for maintaining groundwater availability. © 2024 The Authors

Characteristic of beef tallow/rice husk charcoal/plaster composite phase change materials

Composite materials are a combination of several materials to form a new material with specific properties. Chemical compatibility of the constituent materials is a factor that affects the characteristics of composite materials. Currently, composite phase change materials (PCM) are commonly applied as thermal energy storage systems. This study investigated the characteristics of beef tallow/rice husk charcoal/plaster PCM composite. The weight fraction of rice husk charcoal used was 10%. To prevent leakage of beef tallow from the composite structure, the researcher used polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) to cover the tallow/RHC composite before mixing it with plaster material. As much as 30% of the tallow/RHC/PVAc composite weight fraction is integrated into the plaster. PCM composite was made by using a direct incorporation method. The FTIR test results on the PCM composites produced showed good chemical compatibility among different components. The scanning electron microscope results showed the formation of microcapsules where the rice husk charcoal and polyvinyl acetate functions as a wrapper/capsule for beef tallow. This composite is suitable for application in building walls as thermal energy storage.

Concrete is the most popular material construction which can be applied in broad construction projects. In addition, concrete is also featured with robust strength, durability, reflectivity, and versatility. However, concrete is prone to rupture that results in decreasing life span and its quality, so it requires additional cost for repair toward its damage. Self-healing concrete is one of the innovations developed by researchers to solve the cracks in concrete allowing the concrete to recover the cracks through the healing process. A self-healing concrete has more superior mechanical properties compared with normal concrete. Self-healing mechanisms can be divided into two types: autogenic and autonomic self-healing. Autogenic self-healing takes advantage of the formation of calcium carbonate crystals from unhydrated cement or mineral particles. Meanwhile, autonomic self-healing uses a healing agent capsulized into microvascular, microencapsulation, and pallets. Researchers applied self-healing concrete on a macro-scale, such as in panel walls, roof slabs, and river floodgates. This paper uses the literature review method to collect the data about self-healing concrete. This study aims to discuss self-healing concrete, its mechanical properties, durability, and analysis of the use of self-healing concrete from multi-perspective disciplines including economy, health and environment, construction, and public policy in Asia’s countries.

Physical progress analysis of structure works using earned value management integrated with artificial neural network

Analysis of physical progress is useful for knowing project conditions and avoiding potential delays in construction projects. Analysis in this study aims to evaluate physical progress and estimate the completion time of structure works of Integrated Building Classroom State University of Malang (GKB UM) by integrating Earned Value Management and Artificial Neural Network. The results showed that the cumulative physical progress of the structural work was delayed by 24 weeks. The delay in loading test bored pile due to weather, damage to the tower crane and concrete pump tools, mobilization of tools and design changes to the superstructure were some of the problems encountered during the process of building structure works on GKB UM. The Artificial Neural Network model produces a small deviation between the predicted and the actual physical progress and suitable for estimating project completion.

The digitalization in the 21st century has brought tremendous benefits in many aspects of human lives, including in education. It opens the door of observing the phenomena that are difficult to do in classrooms. As phenomena observation is a vital activity in learning science, the technology of augmented reality (AR) will help students digitally observe as many phenomena as possible during their learning process. In this study, a science book that is integrated with AR technology was developed. It aims to fill the gap in the literature of what components should be included in an AR-based science book, especially the learning resource that is suitable for STEAM education. The study was limited to environmental pollution and global warming topics. The results showed that the developed AR-based science book has met the eligibility criteria to be used in STEAM education. In terms of numerical viewpoint, the scores for the feasibility test were 96.09% and 97.65% respectively for the learning media and material validation. Therefore, the AR-based science book is considered as a valid learning resource from the expert assessment. In addition, teachers and students also showed positive perspectives towards the AR-integrated book.

The Indonesia high-speed train traveler preference analysis (case study: Jakarta-Bandung)

This study assesses the potential passenger preference of the High-Speed Train infrastructure, which connects Jakarta – Bandung. The study aims to understand the potential HST passenger travel characteristics, which is important in predicting the HST demand. This study conducts a roadside interview using a stated preference methodology for several transport modes passenger serving Jakarta-Bandung, namely; private vehicle, train, intercity bus and paratransit. Moreover, the study extends in observing the short trip passenger preference. The analysis defines that the preferred fares are 300.000 (20 USD), which is increased compared to 2016 studies. The forecasting results of the demand for fast trains based on the probability of modal transfers amounted to 54,764 passengers per day with details of the number of trips Jakarta-Bandung was 27,005 while the Bandung-Jakarta trip was 27,759. The results for a significant difference between the total daily trips of Bandung-Jakarta and Jakarta-Bandung have already been seen since the initial statistical analysis where according to survey data, people who travelled Bandung-Jakarta were more elastic compared to Jakarta-Bandung trips. This finding shows clearly that the passenger traffic vehicle capitulates with the current road traffic highway conditions. Note that they are more uncertainty in condition on road traffic in comparison to the railway passenger. In more details, sensitivity analysis indicates that the passenger from Jakarta is more comfortable to shift using the HST compared to the passenger from Bandung. There is an indication that the Jakarta people have a higher value of time as they have a higher preference to shift toward faster transport mode compared to Bandung people. This information is also useful for operation policy, including ticketing differentiation based on the travel time period and travel origin-destination.

The J-value as the measurement tool of the bonds investor's behavior

For many years, mathematics has been used to solve the problem in economic and finance instead of natural science and engineering. This paper shows how accurate mathematics reads financial behavior. One of the financial areas using the mathematics approach is the bond valuation technique. Bond is one of the long term debt instruments. The finding in this research is that mathematics can be used to read the changes in the concept of a pricing model where the par value of bonds is always going to 100% at the maturity date. Theoretically, the bonds fair price is resulted by calculating the present value of future coupon interest of bonds, but not in practice, caused by the bonds investor behavior. The difference in price, resulted from both different approaches, in this paper is defined by a new mathematical concept to reflect the bonds' investor behavior. It is the aim of this research. To address the differences, we have evaluated the fair price of bonds calculation by creating new mathematics equations by combining the calculation of the present value of future coupon interest of bonds with the market concept models. The result is a new mathematical model called J-Value. To prove the eligibility of J-Value, a simulation was done. The mathematics model in this paper is found by combining the usage of a qualitative method and supported by a quantitative method.

Developing and evaluating prediction models of architectural work performance by combining earned value methods and support vector machine

The concept of project management helps minimize the risk of loss for project managers. This study aims to develop a model for evaluating the performance of architectural work by combining the Earned Value Management (EVM) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The Earned Value method has advantages in forecasting project scheduling and planning. In this research, forecasting is done with the help of machine learning to increase the accuracy of project completion time prediction. This research uses the architectural data study object of the Lecture Building Project (GKB UM). This study indicates that the performance of the architectural work of GKB UM has been delayed with a schedule variance (SVt) value of -13.53 weeks. In developing the prediction model using the Support Vector Machine algorithm, the most optimal parameter results are using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel type, complexity (C) 150, and gamma (y) 0.01 with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value of 0.565. Thus the prediction of project completion has a difference of 4 weeks. Project delays were caused by weather problems, Tower Crane (TC) damage, incompatibility of Homogeneous Tile (HT) work, and changes in Bill of Quantity (BOQ).
