Wireless Federated Learning With Hybrid Local and Centralized Training: A Latency Minimization Design

Wireless federated learning (FL) is a collaborative machine learning (ML) framework in which wireless client-devices independently train their ML models and send the locally trained models to the FL server for aggregation. In this paper, we consider the coexistence of privacy-sensitive client-devices and privacy-insensitive yet computing-resource constrained client-devices, and propose an FL framework with a hybrid centralized training and local training. Specifically, the privacy-sensitive client-devices perform local ML model training and send their local models to the FL server. Each privacy-insensitive client-device can have two options, i.e., (i) conducting a local training and then sending its local model to the FL server, and (ii) directly sending its local data to the FL server for the centralized training. The FL server, after collecting the data from the privacy-insensitive client-devices (which choose to upload the local data), conducts a centralized training with the received datasets. The global model is then generated by aggregating (i) the local models uploaded by the client-devices and (ii) the model trained by the FL server centrally. Focusing on this hybrid FL framework, we firstly analyze its convergence feature with respect to the client-devices' selections of local training or centralized training. We then formulate a joint optimization of client-devices' selections of the local training or centralized training, the FL training configuration (i.e., the number of the local iterations and the number of the global iterations), and the bandwidth allocations to the client-devices, with the objective of minimizing the overall latency for reaching the FL convergence. Despite the non-convexity of the joint optimization problem, we identify its layered structure and propose an efficient algorithm to solve it. The economic dispatch problem (EDP) poses a significant challenge in energy management for modern power systems, particularly as these systems undergo expansion. This growth escalates the demand for communication resources and increases the risk of communication failures. To address this challenge, we propose a distributed algorithm with network-independent step sizes and an event-triggered mechanism, which reduces communication requirements and enhances adaptability. Unlike traditional methods, our algorithm uses network-independent step sizes derived from each agent's local cost functions, thus eliminating the need for detailed network topology knowledge. The theoretical derivation identifies a range of step size values that depend solely on the objective function's strong convexity and the gradient's Lipschitz continuity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is shown to achieve a linear convergence rate, assuming the event triggering threshold criteria are met for linear convergence. Numerical experiments further validate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed distributed algorithm by demonstrating its ability to maintain good convergence characteristics while reducing communication frequency. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Sperm morphology measurement is vital for diagnosing male infertility, which involves quantification of multiple subcellular parts for each sperm. Instance-aware part segmentation networks have been introduced to address this task by automatically identifying individual sperm and segmenting their subcellular parts. However, major limitations of state-of-the-art instance-aware part segmentation networks include: 1) they are time-consuming and computational expensive due to sequential processing and multi-stage frameworks;2) they perform poorly for densely packed sperm that overlap or cross over one another. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes 1) integrating instance identification and subcellular part segmentation within a single-stage framework to save inference time and memory usage;2) dividing a sperm target into simpler components (head and tail) to improve prediction accuracy, followed by a contrastive learning-based matching method to pair the head and tail. Experimental results on our clinically collected human sperm dataset demonstrated that the proposed network not only outperformed state-of-the-art CP-Net (by 3.5% APpvol) but also achieved realtime inference (48.0 frames per second), effectively meeting the clinical requirements for automated parts segmentation of sperm. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Device-to-device connection is a captivating new approach that holds great potential for the next generation of mobile networks, among others 5G and beyond. One of the reasons for this is that it has the capacity to boost system throughput, reduce the burden on the network core, and enhance spectral efficiency. Therefore, in order to make the most of these advantages, it is of the utmost importance to enhance the allocation of resources and power in order to reduce the amount of interference caused by co-channels. This paper proposes utilizing a based simulated annealing (SAA) technique to enhance combined radio spectrum and energy allocation. The SAA is made up of a phase that involves heating, which is then followed by slow and steady cooling. This is a method that is very often used in the field of metallurgy. Doing so results in an ordered and therefore stronger metal with more flexibility and less energy. The simulation outcomes show that the proposed approach surpasses both the random solution and Genetic approach (GA) in terms of time to stabilize to an optimal solution, throughput, and obtaining a feasible solution. © 2024 IEEE.

The optimization of crop harvesting processes for commonly cultivated crops is of great importance in the aim of agricultural industrialization. Nowadays, the utilization of machine vision has enabled the automated identification of crops, leading to the enhancement of harvesting efficiency, but challenges still exist. This study presents a new framework that combines two separate architectures of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in order to simultaneously accomplish the tasks of crop detection and harvesting (robotic manipulation) inside a simulated environment. Crop images in the simulated environment are subjected to random rotations, cropping, brightness, and contrast adjustments to create augmented images for dataset generation. The You Only Look Once(YOLO) algorithmic framework is employed with traditional Rectangular Bounding Boxes (R-Bbox) for crop localization. The proposed method subsequently utilises the acquired image data via a visual geometry group model in order to reveal the grasping positions for the robotic manipulation. © 2024 IEEE.

This research aimed to reveal the information process in the brain of the patients who suffered from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using the power spectra and timelag analysis in electroencephalogram (EEG). The patients with MCI have memory or thinking problems, and are at a great risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Ten patients with MCI and 13 healthy adults (non-MCI) were examined. The EEGs (122.88 seconds/subject) during a state of relaxation with the eyes closed, were analyzed using the Fourier analysis (power spectrum) and the timelag analysis. The results showed that the mean value of the power spectra in MCI was significantly higher than the mean value in non-MCI in the theta band. The mean value of the absolute timelag values (ATL) in MCI was significantly lower than the mean value in non-MCI in the frontal and left temporal areas. Our findings suggest that the features from EEG of MCI were abstracted in the theta band, and the propagation of information related to memory in brain would becoming fast in MCI. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Historically, the fields of computer science, cognitive science, and neuroscience have been tightly linked. To date, this collaboration has yielded major advances in how the brain and mind are understood, as well as the ways in which artificial minds can be constructed to serve as new collaborators to humans. Yet there are still significant gaps between the capabilities of state-of-the-art autonomous robots and the expectations developed by real users who are now encountering autonomous robots on the job. We present our views as well as a case study of our evaluation of two autonomous robots intended to aid nurses within hospital settings: Moxi and TUG. Both cobots were originally considered for procurement by our collaborating healthcare system,UHS, at which time our team began the process of trying to systematically vet each option to aid in the decision making process. What we found was a lack of evidence on either platform in academic literature, which led us to analyze user comments on social media. In order to improve the fit of autonomous robots into human environments, research must be conducted and evidence must be shared, and the Human Factors community can aid in this effort

Load balancing is vital for the efficient and long-term operation of cloud data *** virtualization,post(reactive)migration of virtual machines(VMs)after allocation is the traditional way for load balancing and consoli***,it is not easy for reactive migration to obtain predefined load balance objectives and it may interrupt services and bring ***,we provide a new approach,called Prepartition,for load *** partitions a VM request into a few sub-requests sequentially with start time,end time and capacity demands,and treats each sub-request as a regular VM *** this way,it can proactively set a bound for each VM request on each physical machine and makes the scheduler get ready before VM migration to obtain the predefined load balancing goal,which supports the resource allocation in a fine-grained *** with real-world trace and synthetic data show that our proposed approach with offline version(PrepartitionOff)scheduling has 10%–20%better performance than the existing load balancing baselines under several metrics,including average utilization,imbalance degree,makespan and Capacity_*** also extend Prepartition to online load *** results show that our proposed approach also outperforms state-of-the-art online algorithms.

Electric vehicles play an important role in the global transition to "Net Zero" and the decarbonisation of point source emissions from road transport, as their market share continues to grow each year. However, integrating these electric vehicles into existing electricity grids, refuelling stations and supply chains presents significant challenges. But most challenges can be effectively addressed through the implementation of artificial intelligence solutions. This paper starts with an introduction to artificial intelligence and an investigation of the challenges associated with the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in society. Then, the paper analyses in detail how artificial intelligence can facilitate the smooth integration of electric vehicles. In addition, the paper provides a detailed investigation of the life-cycle emissions of electric vehicles and examines the limitations of existing research in this area and suggests potential avenues for future research. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2024.
