High-speed optical sensor for security applications

with the increasing demand for security, passive optical sensors are helping to keep the public's safety. They typically are used in video cameras that generate a two-dimensional image on a screen. As such, cameras gain stereo 3-d vision based on human brain function. A three-dimensional technology is under development by 3d image processing GmbH of Munich, Germany, that offers a way to perform real-time distance measurement.

The raise of 3d image market is rapid. In previous work [Wang 2008], distortion and grid line bending constraints is adapted to image resizing while important areas remain the same scale. In another previous work [Lang 2010], disparity of input stereo image is remapped, and warped stereo image pairs are manipulated by similar constraints. In our system, we adapt image constraints similar to Lang's work, but for a depth refinement purpose. Original random and sharp depth error causes deformation and large defect of hole-filling. These errors are refined, but with a consequence of blurred depth edge. So we adapt another circuit model constraint to sharpen the depth edge again, but maintain the smoothed results at the same time. This technique is modified from previous work [Grady 2006], pixels are electrical circuit nodes with resistance derived from RGB difference. Generally, temporal smooth in video processing needs information from several frames. But in our system, no multiple frames involve but only current frame. In the same scene, different frames share similar color and shape. Since depth map is refined by 2d image, and temporal 2d images are similar, refined depths tend to be smoothed and sharpened in similar way. Finally, depth map of previous frame is used as an initial depth map of current optimization. Experiment results in Figure 1 & 2 show significant improvement.

This paper presents a dual-application FFT processor for spectral domain optical coherence tomography (Sd-OCT) systems integrated with a wireless local area networking (WLAN) module. A high-radix multimode FFT kernel together with the four-path memory-data access scheme is proposed to improve the hardware efficiency. By the proposed memory-based architecture, multimode 2048/1024-point FFTx2 (for Sd-OCT) or 128/64-point FFTx4 (for WLAN) can be performed in an energy-efficient manner. A test chip has been designed using a TSMC 0.18μm process with a core area of 4.12 mm2. Through post-layout simulation, the power consumption is 69.2 mW and 72.7 mW at 40 MHz for OCT/2048-point FFTx2 and WLAN/128-point FFTx4 modes, respectively. Compared to the referred, the power saving of 26%∼53% can be achieved using the proposed design. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new fast and high-resolution color structured-light-based 3d imaging system. Unlike the expensive laser-based 3d imaging system, our hand-held system contains a commercial digital camera and two special designed projectors, the cost is much lower. Only two images are necessarily to reconstruct the 3d model with textures. One projector illuminates white light for texture imaging, the other projector projects special designed pattern for 3d information imaging. 384 vertical color bars (comprised of six primary colors) with special coding are projected onto the target, our proposed algorithm detects edges between any two successive color bars. From decoding algorithm the correct locations of edges are derived. Then the calibration algorithm finds accurate positions of edges in 3d space with triangulation. Color bars can be seriously distorted by colorful objects. Edges and colors of the object may cause edges of color bars to be broken segments. And some bars even show very different colors. A curve reconstruction algorithm is developed to reconstruct the complete edge from residual edge segments. And a robust color decoding algorithm can recover the correct color sequence even when many color bars are seriously distorted. The suggested approach has been implemented and the preliminary results show the resolution can compete with laser 3d imaging systems and-0.2∼+0.2 mm accuracy is achieved. © 2017 SPIE.

The parameters of contractive transformations axe simplified by a concise fractal iteration form with geometric meaning. A local iteration algorithm is proposed which can solve the non-separation problem when Collage Theorem is applied to find the appropriate fractal parameters. The elevation data compression is proved experimentally to be effective in reconstruction quality and time-saving.

In manufacturing processes, inspection capability is increasingly used as early in the production value chain as possible to ensure that scrap and rework costs are minimised. Fast radiographic in-line inspection systems, fully unmanned and equipped with automatic defect recognition e.g. of castings, are now state-of-the-art technology. This paper explains the next evolutionary step within the X-ray technology of utilizing fast computer tomography technology, scanning concepts and algorithms fulfilling high- throughput requirements for different applications and first results of an atline / inlineCT evaluation at Volkswagen Foundry Hannover, Germany.

After a period of 2 years he joined the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa. His current interest is the application of numerical analysis techniques to the problem of image processing particularly image enhancement and restoration data compression pattern classification parameter estimation and 3D robot vision.

Thresholding techniques are fundamental for region segmentation of a gray level image. It is often realistic to assume that gray pixel levels are subject to a mixture of normal distributions. This paper points out problems caused by the underestimation of variances from a frequency distribution and solves the problems by transforming a frequency distribution into a piecewise-continuous distribution based on the maximum entropy criterion. This transformation improves conventional thresholding techniques. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the transformation.

The radiosity technique uses the heat transfer theory to define a view‐independent illumination model. For complex scenes, calculation of this model is very time‐intensive, due largely to the determination of a geometric factor, defined with a double area integral, and named form factor. This paper presents a new expression of the form factor, which can be reformulated, in a computationally more efficient manner, as a simple line integral for planar polygonal convex surfaces that are perfectly diffuse. Recently, parallel computers have been used to decrease calculation time. Previous work is focused mainly on distributed implementations of a method, the progressive refinement method, widely used for complex environments. The *** is a completely reconfigurable MIMd machine, based on the transputer chip. In this paper, we compare a parallel implementation of the progressive refinement method with a direct method which takes into account the memory capabilities of this kind of machine. © 1993 Eurographics Association

Visibility of density unevenness area appeared on printed images varies depending on some characteristics of input images. We focused on Saliency and Spatial frequency of tone distribution as those characteristics to clarify a mechanism for perceiving image noise. In this study, we performed examinations for detecting density unevenness area. Shapes of the density unevenness are circle and belt-like. As results, we found that specific spatial frequency components in original tone distribution, which is similar to that of the density unevenness, correlated with the visibility of density unevenness. Trends between statistic values of saliency and visibility of density unevenness showed different depending on the polarity of density change. We could not clarify factors of this phenomenon. Finally, those statistic values of saliency which we studied were not proved as parameters affecting to visibility of density unevenness. All correlations for belt-like density unevenness were weaker than in case of circle. Some impacts of their size or continuity were supposed. © 2016 Society for Imaging Science and Technology.
