This study is to explore a method of learning support in e-Learning environment including some learning supporters. Especially we develop a learning support method of distance teaching assistants on the Web for problem solving based group learning. We need to explore the learning models of next generation in knowledge society. Simultaneously, challenge to new pedagogy in learning and education with e-Learning environment is desired. From a viewpoint of learning support, learners can be concerned with learning supporters such as other teachers, domain experts and learners who have already studied the subject matter as well as a teacher at the face-to-face lesson in the learning environment. So, the learning support model needs to include some tools which have some functions of the learning supports. In this paper, we extract learning support patterns from an analysis of dialogue patterns between learners and distance teaching assistants. Moreover, we describe the outline of a bulletin board tool based on the learning support patterns.

This paper is concerned with improvement of the KDI-based fault detection method so far developed by authors for nonlinear black-box systems. When modeling the system, Quasi-ARMAX model with multi-model structure is used. A fault due to unexpected change in system parameters will appear as the change of identified model. Kullback discrimination Information (KDI) can then be used as the fault detection index to evaluate the distortion in identified model. Several schemes to improve the fault detection performance are proposed, as well as the realization of a kind of fault isolation function based on a recognition approach in the model parameter space. The effectiveness of the method is verified through simulation studies on the ship propulsion system constructed for benchmark test.

This paper describes the robust reading competitions for ICDAR 2003. With the rapid growth in research over the last few years on recognizing text in natural scenes, there is an urgent need to establish some common benchmark datasets and gain a clear understanding of the current state of the art. We use the term 'robust reading' to refer to text images that are beyond the capabilities of current commercial OCR packages. We chose to break down the robust reading problem into three subproblems and run competitions for each stage, and also a competition for the best overall system. The subproblems we chose were text locating, character recognition and word recognition. By breaking down the problem in this way, we hoped to gain a better understanding of the state of the art in each of the subproblems. Furthermore, our methodology involved storing detailed results of applying each algorithm to each image in the datasets, allowing researchers to study in depth the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm. The text-locating contest was the only one to have any entries. We give a brief description of each entry and present the results of this contest, showing cases where the leading entries succeed and fail. We also describe an algorithm for combining the outputs of the individual text locators and show how the combination scheme improves on any of the individual systems. © Springer-Verlag 2005.

We will argue in this paper that the nature and magnitude of model uncertainty dictate the appropriateness of the control system design methodology. To obtain these arguments, we will pursue optimality of the control system design. Note this is a philosophical paper, in which we present our arguments in qualitative terms. We will identify the circumstances under which several control system design methodologies are appropriate. The design methodologies that will be considered are (1) optimal control and optimal feedback design, (2) model predictive control (receding horizon control), (3) active and passive adaptive control and (4) robust control. Robust control strategies are conservative and limit the possible improvements that can be obtained over say classical PID control. However, it will turn out that for certain types of control problems, improvements in performance are indeed limited. Roughly speaking, the area where we may expect (significant) improvement from advanced (optimal) control system design is very much limited by the uncertainty of the systems model. Miracles are not to be expected from advanced control. What can be expected is reflected in an active adaptive optimal control scheme introduced and discussed in this paper. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

The internal structural changes around the crack-tip and the pertinent crack growth behavior in an amorphous metal are studied by a large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The Finnis-Sinclair potential for α-iron is used as an interatomic potential. The model amorphous metal was created by melting-rapid quenching simulation. The crack opens in similar fashion and it has smooth surfaces during the amorphous state. As it deformed, nano-scaled crystalline phase grows around the crack-tip. The distribution of deformation zones and deformation mechanism are significantly altered. The grains are not deformed while they are relatively small. The emission of dislocations from the crack-tip is observed, after the crystal phase covered the crack-tip surfaces. The grain size appeared small in the vicinity of the crack-tip, and becomes gradually large as it separates form the crack-tip.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. Separability conditions are formulated for multilayer nets to have solutions by a set of normal vectors orthogonal to separation hyperplanes. Comparing separability conditions to distributions of normal vectors with weights and biases initialized ordinarily by random numbers with a zero mean, we found that bipolar nets are superior to unipolar nets in convergence of the back propagation learning initialized in such an ordinary manner. © 2004 Fuji Technology Press. Relationship between Condensation Energy and Anisotropy in Bi‐2212 Superconductor

The condensation energy of Bi‐2212 superconductor in various doped states was evaluated from the flux pinning strength of columnar defects. For the purpose the collective flux creep theory was used to estimate the virtual critical current density in creep‐free state and the summation theory was used to estimate the elementary pinning force of the columnar defects. The values of obtained thermodynamic critical field are in the range of other observations and this proves a validity of the present evaluation. The obtained condensation energy strongly depends on the anisotropy determined by the superconductivity in the block layer. It is found that the condensation energy is drastically enhanced with decreasing temperature below the critical point.
