Computational investigation into resistance characteristics of a full-scale pusher-barge system

In the presence of hydrodynamic motion interference between pusher and multiple barge configurations, a reliable investigation allowing an accurate prediction of her total resistance is obviously required. To achieve such objective, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach is then proposed to predict the total ship’s resistance of a pusher-barge system in the calm water condition. The various barge’s configurations incorporated with various Froude numbers (Fr) have been considered in the computational simulation incorporated with the full-scale dimension of the pusher-barge. In general, the CFO results revealed that the total resistances of the various configurations of the pusher-barge system had a qualitatively good agreement with the experimental model test results. Merely, the increase of Froude number (Fr=0.128 to 0.308) was proportional to the magnitude of total resistance. In addition, the pusher-barge system of the 33BP configuration provides the highest resistance as compared to others. It should be noted here that the pusher-barges configurations led to the susceptible effect to the total ship’s resistance which resulted in remarkable increase of the effective power values as the substituting their arrangements from the longitudinal configurations and to the lateral ones. This finding provides a very valuable insight aimed at selecting the proper pusher-barge configurations towards reducing the total ship’s resistance.

In this note, the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is applied as a tool for solving the system of non-linear Fredholm-Volterra integral equations. The generalized chain rule is implemented for differentiation of the non-linear kernel functions with many variables, and the non-linear problem is reduced into a sequence of known non-linear integral equa- tions. The proposed method is compared with the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) given in Yusufogli [20] and Biazar and Ghazyini [21]. Numerical results reveal that the proposed method is very effective with high accuracy and dominated the HPM.

Riverbank erosion is an undesired phenomenon and was always given a special attention by engineers and authorities in the past. Human activities are believed accelerated the process of erosion at either terrestrial area or in the river system. The hydraulic force will prompt toe erosion at the water edge while percentage of soil composition always induced potential mass wasting at the upper riverbank section. The second category of erosion was given special attention in this study. The aftermath of 2014 catastrophe flood in Kelantan initiated gradual erosion along the Kelantan River network. It is believed that the vegetative cover at the riverbank section was washed away by the flooding event. The exposure of bare soil is susceptible to have erosion should the rainfall erosivity exceeds the capacity of soil to withstand the interlocking texture. Therefore, this study was performed to assess the potential risk of riverbank erosion at the area where no vegetative cover was detected. The study area was focused on the downstream part of Sg Kelantan River basin due to dense of population and active socio-economic activities. The hand Auger was deployed to extract the soil composition along the riverbank section. The device was hammered at an approximate 50 mm- 1 meter beneath the ground surface to sample the undisturbed soil. The soils were brought to the lab for sieving and hydrometer analysis. The main purpose laboratory work is to obtain a complete grain size distribution. The final grain size distribution was mapped against the RON index to obtain the potential risk of either “low”, “moderate”, “high”, “very high” or “critical” erosion. The output of this study revealed that point number 3 (N 6°11’50”, E 102°14’5”) and point number 4 (N 6°12’22”, E 102°14’5”) are susceptible to have critical erosion risk level based on soil composition. In recent years, considerable interest in fractional differential equations has been stimulated due to their numerous applications in the areas of physics and engineering. Many essential phenomena in electromagnetics, acoustics, viscoelasticity, electrochemistry, and material science are well described by differential equations of fractional order (Podlubny [8]). In certain circumstances, many exact solutions for linear fractional differential equation had been found. However, in general, there exists no method that yields an exact solution for nonlinear fractional differential equations. In this note, we consider the following nonlinear mixed Volterra-Fredholm integro-differential equation (VFIDEs) of fractional order. cD0+αu(t)φ(t)+λ∫0t ∫0Tk(x,s)F(u(s))dxds,(1)u(i)(0)=bi, i=0,…,n−1, n−1<α≤n,(2)where t ∈ Ω = [0; T], k : Ω × Ω → ℝ, ϕ : Ω → ℝ are known functions, F : C(Ω, ℝ) → ℝ is nonlinear function, and u(s) is unknown function to be determined, bi (i = 0,…, n − 1) and λ are constants, cD0+α is the Caputo fractional derivative of order α. At first, Eq. (1)-(2) is written into operator form and applied standard homotopy analysis method (Liao, 1992) to reduce it into a sequence of known integral equation problems. Solving the latter equations step by step using the truncated Taylor series, an approximate solution is obtained. Description of the method and discretization of the problems together with the control convergence parameter are thoroughly studied. In addition, one example is illustrated to show the accuracy and validity of the proposed approach. Numerical results reveal that the proposed method is highly accurate and quickly approaches the exact solution when the number of iteration increases.

Global fossil fuel and diesel consumption have been increasing steadily for the past decade. Despite the increasing demand, the production of crude oil has been fluctuating. It is crucial to find an alternative to fossil fuel to preserve and prolong its oil supply. A good way of this is replacing public vehicles with hybrid vehicles, since good public transport will dissuade the public from using personal transport, reducing the number of cars on the road. The bus is the best choice since they are more prevalent than other forms of public vehicles. This research aims to design the electric machine model for hybrid buses, determine the parameters and specifications, derive a detailed model, and validate and analyse the developed electric machine (EM) with Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR). The parameters and specification for the EM are determined before designing an EM model in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The model is then validated and analysed in the ADVISOR software. From this research, the ideal E M for hybrid buses can be developed. The results from this study suggest the possibility of using our built model as the basis for the components to be used in BAS KiTe PHEB. Using the BAS KiTe PHEB model, it expects that the diesel consumption will be significantly reduced, thus reducing the cost and environmental impact of the buses.

Bas KiTe is the public bus in Kuala Terengganu currently consume diesel as the primary source to operate the bus. To reduce diesel usage, Bas KiTe plug-in hybrid electric bus (KITEPHEB) is introduced. In KITEPHEB, the combination of ultracapacitor and battery in energy system storage (ESS) is studied. The aims of this study to determine the parameters and specification of ESS, design a model of the ESS components using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, and validate the ESS model using ADVISOR using standard driving cycle. KITEPHEB battery voltage, battery power, ESS demand power, fuel economy and emission were analysed using Kuala Terengganu driving cycle. The results have shown that the ESS model for KITEPHEB may be used for building the plug-in hybrid electric bus prototype in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.

Synthesis of graphene oxide from synthetic graphite utilizing oil palm trunk waste via modification of hummers’ method

The synthetic graphite was produced from oil palm trunk waste at much more lower heating temperature compared to the commercially graphite available in the market, which is produce at the temperature of 2500 °C and above by using inorganic and non-waste sources. However, synthetic graphite being used in this study produced from oil palm trunk waste at the heating temperature of 800 °C, 20 ° per minute heating rate with soaking time 2 hours. The synthetic graphite produce from oil palm trunk waste was less dense than commercial graphite about two times. This synthetic graphite produce from oil palm trunk waste will be further exfoliated to produce graphene oxide through modification of Hummers’ method. The modification has been done in terms of amount of chemical being used in exfoliation process. The amount of chemical been used is triple up from the normal amount. The Graphene Oxide obtained was further characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). From XRD analysis, the graphene oxide peak was observed from 10 to 11 degrees at 2Θ for sample of graphene oxide from triple amount of chemical being used. From the study of AFM, the single layer of graphene oxide also presents in the sample of the graphene oxide produce from triple parameters. All of the functional groups present in graphene oxide produced from commercial graphite also present in graphene oxide produced from oil palm trunk waste with triple parameter.

Bukit Maras, one of the recreational areas in Terengganu enJoys a steady influx of hikers and recreational visitors yearly with an adequate development in terms of facility. Nevertheless, there is no clear indicator to measure the sustainab ility of ecotourism on the economic improvement of the locals. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the impact of tourist, specifically on one of the primary beneficiary of tourism activity which are the local vendors. Questionnaire was developed for two categories of respondents, the visitors and local vendors regarding several elements of Bukit Maras tourism as well as visitors spending habits and vendor’s income. The data obtained were then analysed using the proximity matrix analysis and visualised as heat map. A very positive response regarding tourism of Bukit Maras were recorded for both visitors and vendors. However, most visitors (79%) spend less than RM50 on site. Additionally, several elements evaluated by the visitors such as the facilities, environment and vendors’ behavior have been ide ntified to have a positive correlation with an improvement in the vendor’s income. This indicates that although positive ratings ha ve been given by the visitors on Bukit Maras, it does not affect both the expenditure of visitors and income of the vendors. Thus, there is need for improvement in the current management of Bukit Maras eco-tourism; focusing on the sustainable income of the local vendor.

iAMR: intelligent auto-dispenser mosquito repellent system

Dengue fever has become an increasingly significant health threat worldwide. Currently, due to lack of specific treatment or vaccine against dengue, vector control, which is available in many forms, remains a key strategy for dengue fever prevention. Hence, we introduce an iAMR: Intelligent Auto-Dispenser Mosquito Repellent, an innovative system in line with 'Industry 4.0' concept where it includes current trend of automation and data exchange. It also includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing. The iAMR solves the issues of when to spray (by auto-spray using sensor) and long live batteries (with LORAWAN technology). When combined with the mini aerosol (X'MOS), it provides an even more effective mosquito control. This all-in-one system ensures a mosquito-free environment in your home. The iAMR device relies on the microcontroller and sensor in order to operate the intended spraying task. The microcontroller used is an IoT based device called ESP8266 which is a WiFi-embedded microcontroller that utilized standard everyday WiFi band frequency which is at 2.4 GHz. A DC geared motor sensor for dispenser device is used. The main contribution of iAMR is to monitor and track for the mosquito repellant (X'MOS) to be refilled. The implementation shows the iAMR system able to update the level of each X'MOS in iAMR devices which reducing the cost of manual human checking for X'Mos refill.

Supersingular integral equations of the first kind and its approximate solutions

In this note, we consider a supersingular integral equations (SuperSIEs) of the first kind on the interval [−1,1] with the assumption that kernel of the hypersingular integral is constant on the diagonal of the domain D = [−1,1]×[−1,1] . Projection method together with Chebyshev polynomials of the first, second, third and fourth kinds are used to find bounded, unbounded and semi-bounded solutions of SuperSIEs respectively. Exact calculations of singular integrals for Chebyshev polynomials allow us to obtain high accurate approximate solution. Gauss- Chebyshev quadrature formulas are used for high accurate computations of regular kernel integrals. Two examples are provided to verify the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. Comparisons with other methods are also given. Numerical examples reveal that approximate solutions are exact if solution of SuperSIEs is of the polynomial forms with corresponding weights. It is worth to note that proposed method works well for large value of node points and errors are drastically decreases.
