We study a new mode of the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double-beta decays in which one of the electrons is emitted from the atom, while the other is directly produced in one of the available s1/2 or p1/2 subshells of the daughter ion. We calculate the phase-space factors, estimate the half-lives and derive the single-electron spectra for 0+ → 0+ ground-state nuclear transitions of the most relevant double-beta-decay isotopes: 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 100Mo, 136Xe and 150Nd. The relativistic electron wave functions are evaluated at the nuclear radius by means of the multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock package Grasp2K. We discuss the prospects for detecting these new modes in the tracking-and-calorimetry experiments NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO.

A brief survey of known results, open problems and new contributions to the understanding of the nonexistence of nontrivial solutions to nonlinear boundary value problems (BVPs) whose linear part is of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type is given. Crucial issues discussed include: the role of so-called critical growth of the nonlinear terms in the equation (often related to threshold values of continuous and compact embedding for Sobolev spaces in Lebesgue spaces), the role that hyperbolicity in the principal part plays in over-determining solutions with classical regularity if data is prescribed everywhere on the boundary, the relative lack of regularity that solutions to such problems possess and the subsequent importance to address nonexistence of generalized solutions.

A reinterpretation of experimental data on learning was used to formulate a law on data acquisition similar to the Hamiltonian of a mechanical system. A matrix of costs in decision making specifies values attributable to a barrier that opposed to hypothesis formation about decision making. The interpretation of the encoding costs as frequencies of oscillatory phenomena leads to a quantum paradigm based in the models of photoelectric effect as well as of a particle against a potential barrier. Cognitive processes are envisaged as complex phenomena represented by structures linked by valence bounds. This metaphor is used to find some prerequisites to certain types of conscious experience as well as to find an explanation for some pathological distortions of cognitive operations as they are represented in the context of the isolobal model. Those quantum phenomena are understood as representing an analogue programming for specific special purpose computations. The formation of complex chemical structures within the context of isolobal theory is understood as an analog quantum paradigm for complex cognitive computations.
