Quantum state and process tomography via adaptive measurements

We investigate quantum state tomography(QST) for pure states and quantum process tomography(QPT) for unitary channels via adaptive measurements. For a quantum system with a d-dimensional Hilbert space, we first propose an adaptive protocol where only 2d. 1 measurement outcomes are used to accomplish the QST for all pure states. This idea is then extended to study QPT for unitary channels, where an adaptive unitary process tomography(AUPT) protocol of d2+d.1measurement outcomes is constructed for any unitary channel. We experimentally implement the AUPT protocol in a 2-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance system. We examine the performance of the AUPT protocol when applied to Hadamard gate, T gate(/8 phase gate), and controlled-NOT gate,respectively, as these gates form the universal gate set for quantum information processing purpose. As a comparison, standard QPT is also implemented for each gate. Our experimental results show that the AUPT protocol that reconstructing unitary channels via adaptive measurements significantly reduce the number of experiments required by standard QPT without considerable loss of fidelity.

In this paper we discusses some pros and cons of using AJAX for increasing the usability of Web applications. As AJAX allows Web applications look like desktop applications, it can increase the learnability of a Web application. Nevertheless, AJAX can also be the source of end user frustration if the XMLHttpRequest is not supported by the browser, Javascript is not available, or an Internet connection is missing. We also provide some workarounds for server response time gaps, for example by providing visible user feedback messages) and enabling the back button to work properly.

For some time now, researchers have been seeking to place software measurement on a more firmly grounded footing by establishing a theoretical basis for software comparison. Although there has been some work on trying to employ information theoretic concepts for the quantification of code documents, particularly on employing entropy and entropy-like measurements, we propose that employing the Similarity Metric of Li, Vit´anyi, and coworkers for the comparison of software documents will lead to the establishment of a theoretically justifiable means of comparing and evaluating software artifacts. In this paper, we review previous work on software measurement with a particular emphasis on information theoretic aspects, we examine the body of work on Kolmogorov complexity (upon which the Similarity Metric is based), and we report on some experiments that lend credence to our proposals. Finally, we discuss the potential advantages derived from the application of this theory to areas in the of software engineering. Copyright © (2007) by Knowledge systems Institute (KSI).

In this paper we propose a smart repeater that consumes less energy and is suitable for driving global interconnections in nanometre technologies. When there is coupling between interconnects, the effective capacitance of a given wire is a function not only of the physical geometry, but also the relative switching pattern described by the bits on the wire in question (the victim) and the adjacent wires (aggressors). The drive strength of a traditional repeater is static, resulting in a spread of the propagation delay, with the repeater strength being essentially too much for every bit pattern other than the worst-case pattern. In the proposed SMART repeater, the drive strength is dynamically altered depending on the relative bit pattern, by partitioning it into a Main Driver and Assistant Driver. For a higher effective load capacitance both drivers switch, while for a lower effective capacitance the assistant driver is quiet. By disconnecting part of the repeater when it is not needed, the total load capacitance to the previous stage is reduced, resulting in reduced energy consumption for those instances. It is shown that the potential average saving in energy can be as much 15% with a 18% jitter reduction over a traditional repeater for typical global wire lengths in nanometre technologies. A mobile multi-agent system is proposed to create solutions for the university course timetabling problem. It is composed of four kinds of agents: (mobile) Course Agents, and (stationary) Signboard, Publisher and Interface Agents. The key strength of this new approach is to use a fundamental attribute of Agents that of autonomy. This autonomy is manifested in this work in the Course Agent. Each Course Agent in the system is responsible for negotiating with other Course Agents to find satisfactory class resource for the course they represent. This negotiation occurs initially indirectly through a Signboard Asent. A set of rules is used to structure Asent-to-Asent negotiation to find mutually acceptable class resources. The scheduling problem is executed in a natural parallel structure using one Signboard Agent to represent a weekday. The experimental results show that this new approach has merit and can lead to acceptable and flexible solutions to the course timetabling problem. Copyright © IICAI 2005.

A reinterpretation of experimental data on learning was used to formulate a law on data acquisition similar to the Hamiltonian of a mechanical system. A matrix of costs in decision making specifies values attributable to a barrier that opposed to hypothesis formation about decision making. The interpretation of the encoding costs as frequencies of oscillatory phenomena leads to a quantum paradigm based in the models of photoelectric effect as well as of a particle against a potential barrier. Cognitive processes are envisaged as complex phenomena represented by structures linked by valence bounds. This metaphor is used to find some prerequisites to certain types of conscious experience as well as to find an explanation for some pathological distortions of cognitive operations as they are represented in the context of the isolobal model. Those quantum phenomena are understood as representing an analogue programming for specific special purpose computations. The formation of complex chemical structures within the context of isolobal theory is understood as an analog quantum paradigm for complex cognitive computations.

Equilibrium structure of ternary blends of A and B homopolymers and symmetric AB block copolymer is investigated using self-consistent field theory by means of computer simulations. This paper considers an optimization problem of a 3-dimensional truss whose vibration is controlled in the case of sensor/actuator collocation. The design variables are cross sectional areas of truss members and locations of the collocated sensors/actuators. The problem has three objectives, the structural weight, the function that represents the influence of the initial state of the system and the number of sensors/actuators. By minimizing the second objective, we can suppress the vibration to some degree. Moreover, in this paper, we consider the uncertainty of the initial state of the system which is dependent on the initial loading conditions. We treat these three objectives by the weighing method for multiobjective problem. The optimization is carried out by the use of Genetic Algorithm. It is shown through numerical simulation that the improvement of the vibration suppression is accomplished by the small control input for the structure designed by the present formulation.
