this third edition (2023) continues to reflect the Edge service roadmap and journey with evolving key drivers and developments. It replaces the two earlier versions. 5G deployments have reached critical markets and are fast evolving towards 6G promising higher performance and near sub-millisecond latency. Higher automation in use cases fueled by AI (e.g. like ChatGPt) is expected to be the core of future applications and services. the service providers have started re-focusing on use cases that can leverage the new and improved capabilities for better average revenue per unit (ARPU) for both consumers and enterprises. Some of the edge relevant Service oriented use cases are based on key constraints (low latency, high throughput, low jitter) ▪Industrial Internet of things (IIot) Industry 4.0 ▪Vehicle to anything - V2X (autonomous vehicle / intelligent transportation / traveling edge) ▪telehealth / telemedicine / remote diagnostics ▪Content delivery (with caching, real time, rich media internet applications) ▪Ad hoc, temporary or on as needed mission specific edge services (emergency, ad hoc major events, DoD combat mission, and more) ▪Enabling sustainable development edge applications. Key elements of the edge-inspired infrastructure to support such services may be noted as follows: ▪Enabling edge with AIML, e.g., OpenAI / *ChatGPt ▪Radio-based Multi-Access Edge (MEC) to provide different services ▪Real-time / near real time enabled radio control, management, and xApps based on O-RAN ▪Constraint-based edge infrastructure to optimize power, form factor, and updates to NFV-SDN with the Iot middleware standards OneM2M from EtSI to cover Iot applications ▪the focus on data privacy, security, data “localization and analytics” ▪Intelligent edge microservices and applications deployed using newer infrastructure components from Semiconductor innovations e.g. DPU, IPU, etc. ▪MEC and 5G integration to support location-based edge platform API adaption ▪Small cells and private B

the rapid changes in the telecommunications environment demand that new services are developed and deployed quickly, and that legacy systems are integrated seamlessly. While emerging technologies and standards such as CORBA allow rapid solution integration via shared reusable components, new issues arise for interoperability and performance assurance in highly heterogeneous environments. In this paper, we first identify these issues in a multi-vendor and multi-ORB telecommunications environment. We then propose a systematic approach for interoperability verification using a reference ORB and industry-standard test suites. We extend our interoperability testing framework to performance verification, where the scope of the tests is detailed and the design strategy is analyzed.

Internet service providers face a daunting challenge in provisioning network resources, due to the rapid growth of the Internet and wide fluctuations in the underlying traffic patterns. the ability of dynamic routing to circumvent congested links and improve application performance makes it a valuable traffic engineering tool. However, deployment of load-sensitive routing is hampered by the overheads imposed by link-state update propagation, path selection, and signaling. Under reasonable protocol and computational overheads, traditional approaches to load-sensitive routing of IP traffic are ineffective, and can introduce significant route flapping, since paths are selected based on out-of-date link-state information. Although stability is improved by performing load-sensitive routing at the flow level, flapping still occurs, because most IP flows have a short duration relative to the desired frequency of link-state updates. to address the efficiency and stability challenges of load-sensitive routing, we introduce a new hybrid approach that performs dynamic routing of long-lived flows, while forwarding short-lived flows on static preprovisioned paths. By relating the detection of long-lived flows to the timescale of link-state update messages in the routing protocol, route stability is considerably improved. through simulation experiments using a one-week ISP packet trace, we show that our hybrid approach significantly outperforms traditional static and dynamic routing schemes, by reacting to fluctuations in network load without introducing route flapping.

Achievement of a more physically diversified multiple vendor environment is desirable. Despite the ubiquity of SONEt equipment, the absence of a true mid-span meet in long-haul SONEt optical transmission systems makes this a challenging achievement that leads to an examination of the network transport architecture for other opportunities to facilitate other multiple vendor transport infrastructure environment. One such opportunity can be created by the separation of the optical and SONEt layers through the use of optoelectronic converters and the utilization of low-cost standardized optical interfaces. the resulting `stand-alone' WDM optical transmission systems can be directly connected to SONEt equipment or other optical transmission equipment.

An empirical study is described using data collected during 50 architecture audits of large industrial telecommunications systems performed over a period of two years. the goal of this study was to develop metrics that could be used to differentiate between projects that are at high risk of failure and those at low risk. these metrics would be computed following an architecture audit before coding has begun, allowing measures to be taken to correct identified problems very early in the development lifecycle. Detailed information is presented about the use of the proposed risk prediction metric for seven of the systems for which we provided architecture audits.

A strategy is presented for determining when it is advantageous to take some action to restore a system to full capacity. A determination is made of the types of data that need to be collected and circumstances under which the strategy is likely to be useful. Production traffic data is presented for a very large industrial telecommunications project, and the strategy is applied. An investigation is made of when the application of the strategy leads to increased system availability and decreased packet loss experienced by users.

three algorithms designed to enforce different quality of service criteria are presented, as well as empirical assessments of the algorithms for three large industrial telecommunications systems. these assessments are made in terms of the simulated performance of each system on average loads selected from operational distributions collected during beta release and field use. In addition, synthetic heavy loads designed to cause the overall CPU utilization rates to exceed 90% of capacity were run. the algorithms build on previously defined load testing algorithms, and use parameters and operational distributions computed for that purpose. this makes the quality of service enforcement algorithms particularly efficient. the primary bases for the assessment of the algorithms were the overall deviation of the response time from the average, and the fraction of service requests that were throttled from clients under varying conditions.

Operational testing is expensive and time-consuming in applications with highly critical but infrequent event occurrences, and procedures are needed for obtaining valid software reliability estimates. two such procedures are accelerated stress testing and experimental design techniques. Examples of accelerated stress in software include: a higher request arrival rate, increasing data traffic "burstiness", and so on. Furthermore, when the software is tested by executing the system under emergency conditions or exception events, it is critical that experimental design techniques are used to account for "carry-over" effects in failure performance. An application of software reliability testing of a telecommunication system node controller is used to describe the issues and our overall approach to software reliability assessment. the reliability projections based on our approach are compared to reliability estimates derived analytically and through simulation. Our results suggest that these statistical techniques are useful techniques for measuring reliability performance under critical events that have a low probability of occurrence.

Standard object-oriented languages do not provide language support for modeling changing collections of interdependent objects. We propose that R++, an integration of the rule and object-oriented paradigms, provides a mechanism for easily implementing such models. R++ extends C++ by adding a new programming construct called the path-based rule. Such data-driven rules are restricted to follow pointers between objects, and are like "automatic methods" that are triggered by changes to monitored objects. Path-based rules encourage a more abstract level of programming, and unlike previous rule integrations, are not at odds with the object-oriented paradigm and offer performance advantages for natural applications.
