Big Data Analysis in Smart Manufacturing: A Review

The technological evolution emerges a unified (Industrial) Internet of Things network, where loosely coupled smart manufacturing devices build smart manufacturing systems and enable comprehensive collaboration possibilities that increase the dynamic and volatility of their ecosystems. On the one hand, this evolution generates a huge field for exploitation, but on the other hand also increases complexity including new challenges and requirements demanding for new approaches in several issues. One challenge is the analysis of such systems that generate huge amounts of (continuously generated) data, potentially containing valuable information useful for several use cases, such as knowledge generation, key performance indicator (KPI) optimization, diagnosis, predication, feedback to design or decision support. This work presents a review of Big Data analysis in smart manufacturing systems. It includes the status quo in research, innovation and development, next challenges, and a comprehensive list of potential use cases and exploitation possibilities.

In the globally competitive market landscape, companies, in order to remain sustainable, must shift their focus towards constantly improving their PSS offerings by incorporating lean thinking approaches. PSS are complex, dynamic, and multi-dimensional systems, which are supported by appropriate infrastructure and networks. At the same time, PSS require robust engineering methods and tools for their design, which allow multi-dimensional exchange of knowledge between the designers and the relevant stakeholders across the value chain. Currently, enabling technologies such as Cloud technology, social media and networking, knowledge management, and context sensitivity present new possibilities to enhance the knowledge exchange and the collaborative process of PSS design. These technologies allow the gathering and analysis of big volumes of data from scattered heterogeneous IT systems and, at the same time, allow PSS design improvements by processing the experiences of the business customers, consumers, designers, shop-floor, and provide feedback to the design phase. However, a number of challenges are encountered during the gathering, visualization, monitoring, and assessment of related data, such as the lack of context sensitivity. Simultaneously, PSS evaluation approaches are still immature and there is limited work that correlates the impact of the entire PSS lifecycle with the performance assessment of the PSS design. The present work includes a review of the aforementioned technologies from academic, market, and industrial perspectives. Based on an extensive literature review and on constructive discussions with three European SMEs, several barriers and limitations of adopting the aforementioned technologies in practice are identified. Finally, a conceptual eco-innovative framework for lean PSS design is presented, explaining how these technologies could be combined for the improvements of PSS design and evaluation procedures.

Modern manufacturing companies are betting on the application of intelligent and more integrated monitoring and control solutions to reduce maintenance problems, production line downtimes and reduction of manufacturing operational costs while guarantying a more efficient management of the resources and an improved quality of products. The shoe industry provides a fertile ground in this direction since traditionally the production and manufacturing of shoes involves a wide variety of materials and a large number of both operations and machines characterized by a huge number of parameters as well. Thereby, the optimization of manufacturing process parameters during production activities is recognized as one of the most important task. As a matter of fact, the selection of the best set of manufacturing process parameters can improve final product quality, cost effectiveness while reducing anomalous situations that potentially may cause a line stopping. The present paper describes the research background that has driven the design and development of the Self-Learning methodology and reference architecture as the foundation for a new generation of monitoring and control solutions. Furthermore, a real application scenario from the shoe industry is also described to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed solution.

The manufacturing processes of today are caught between the growing needs for quality, high process safety, efficiency in manufacturing process, reduced time-to-market and higher productivity. In order to meet these demands, more and more manufacturing companies are betting on the application of intelligent and more integrated monitoring and control solution to reduce maintenance problems, production line downtimes and reduction of manufacturing operational costs while guarantying a more efficient management of the manufacturing resources. In this scenario, the research currently done under the scope of the Self-Learning Production systems (SLPS) tries to fill these gaps by providing a new and integrated way for developing monitoring and control solutions based on novel technologies and especially on self-adaptive, context awareness and data mining techniques. This paper introduces the research background that has driven the design of the generic SLPS architecture and focuses on the Adapter component responsible for adapting the system behaviour according to the actual operative context. The proposed Adapter architecture together with its core components are introduced as well as the generic adaptation process, or rather, the way the Adapter adapt the system behaviour to cope with the current context. Finally, to demonstrate the applicability of the SLPS methodology into real industrial context as well as the Adapter capabilities to learn and evolve along system lifecycle an application scenario is presented.

In the field of Construction Industry (CI), identification of the appropriate activities for the built objects restoration, particularly cultural heritage objects depends highly on the previous experience of the involved workers and companies which is mainly transferred from one to the next generation in the form of tacit knowledge. The increasingly high number of restoration projects imposes a need to support experiencebased problem diagnostics and to facilitate identification of the appropriate restoration measures. It appears that Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), as a problem solving approach that uses specific knowledge of previous experiences for solving new problems, in a very similar way to how humans rely on their previous experience, is a very promising approach. A CBR-based problem diagnostics application, proposed here, is intended to support CI workers on the restoration site in problem solving in the specific area of the built stock restoration in a fashion resembling the experienced workers' approach.

The understanding and applying of knowledge can be difficult if it is isolated from the context under which the knowledge is generated and managed. Despite the importance of contextual information, there has been limited support for utilizing context in existing knowledge management solutions. This paper presents a set of integrated services for context aware enhancing of knowledge and knowledge management: monitoring services monitor human computer interaction to implicitly capture their interactions with the explicit or implicit data;context extraction services extract activity centric knowledge context from the monitoring data, as well as support users to manage their knowledge-based activities;knowledge enhancing services enhance knowledge and knowledge management by taking into consideration the context and topic of the knowledge-based activity. The services are provided in a loosely coupled service oriented framework which can be easily integrated with existing information and knowledge management systems to maximize its usability and extendibility. © 2010 IFAC.

A proactive collaboration with customers facilitates serving of their explicit as well as implicit requirements. However, current supply chain organisation and installed information systems have often problems with dynamic interfacing of supply chain actors and with supporting real life interaction principles. Therefore, specifically interaction between supplier's suppliers with customer's customer is hardly to achieve, notably if distributed and asynchronous interaction takes place in between those peers. Therefore, the paper presents a research approach, which tackles this problem scenario by aiming at an intelligent usage of networked devices like e.g. PDAs and mobile phones, combined with the enabling technologies 'Radio Frequency Identification' and 'Global Navigation Satellite systems'. Furthermore, the key technical characteristics of a potential solution environment are presented, outlining the major components with respect to an architectural and security infrastructure as well as software agents and services for supporting decentralised coordination of tasks in supply chains. © 2008 Nottingham University.
