Point-of-interest (POI) recommendation faces challenges in managing data sparsity and cold-start problems, particularly in terms of personalized recommendation. Firstly, most existing users only visit a small number of POIs, which results in severe data sparsity and makes most conventional methods unsuitable because they require adequate historical data from each user to learn the model. In addition, new users have little or no historical record. Existing ask-to-rate methods for cold start user scenarios treat user answers as historical data, which is inappropriate and causes difficulty in capturing user preferences. Therefore, in this paper, to tackle the data sparsity problem, we propose a user-experience model (UEM) to uncover user behaviors from several aspects. The proposed UEM involves four factors: Who (does it), What (the user does), Where (the user does it), and When (the user does it). In contrast to other methods that model user behavior from individual records, our model introduces a latent variable of user experience to extract similarity among users. This feature makes our model suitable for mitigating the severe sparse-data issue in POI recommendations. Furthermore, to handle the cold-start problem for new users, we propose a pseudo-rating mechanism (PRM) to capture new users’ preferences and recommend POIs. For new users, photos are provided for rating, and these ratings are then used to capture their preferences and estimate the probability of their visits. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better recommendation performance and fairness than the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, user study results validates that the users’ preferences captured via PRM are satisfactory, and UEM provides satisfactory POI recommendations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Ret3D: Rethinking Object Relations for Efficient 3D Object Detection in Driving Scenes

Current efficient LiDAR-based detection frameworks are lacking in exploiting object relations, which naturally present in both spatial and temporal manners. To this end, we introduce a simple, efficient, and effective two-stage detector, termed as Ret3D. At the core of Ret3D is the utilization of novel intra-frame and inter-frame relation modules to capture the spatial and temporal relations accordingly. More Specifically, intra-frame relation module (IntraRM) encapsulates the intra-frame objects into a sparse graph and thus allows us to refine the object features through efficient message passing. On the other hand, inter-frame relation module (InterRM) densely connects each object in its corresponding tracked sequences dynamically, and leverages such temporal information to further enhance its representations efficiently through a lightweight transformer network. We instantiate our novel designs of IntraRM and InterRM with general center-based or anchor-based detectors and evaluate them on Waymo Open Dataset (WOD). With negligible extra overhead, Ret3D achieves the state-of-the-art performance, being 5.5% and 3.2% higher than the recent competitor in terms of the LEVEL-1 and LEVEL-2 mAPH metrics on vehicle detection, respectively. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human society, facilitating the exchange of information and beliefs among people. Despite the advancements in large language models (LLMs), recent agents built with these often neglect the control over discussion tactics, which are essential in communication scenarios and games. As a variant of the famous communication game Werewolf, One Night Ultimate Werewolf (ONUW) requires players to develop strategic discussion policies due to the potential role changes that increase the uncertainty and complexity of the game. In this work, we first present the existence of the Perfect Bayesian Equilibria (PBEs) in two scenarios of the ONUW game: one with discussion and one without. The results showcase that the discussion greatly changes players’ utilities by affecting their beliefs, emphasizing the significance of discussion tactics. Based on the insights obtained from the analyses, we propose an RL-instructed language agent framework, where a discussion policy trained by reinforcement learning (RL) is employed to determine appropriate discussion tactics to adopt. Regardless of the rapid development of sequencing technology, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array has been widely used for many large-scale genomic studies due to its cost-effectiveness. Recently, in parallel with the advancement in imputation strategies, several genotyping platforms for various species have been developed. Despite the importance of imputation accuracy in SNP array design, to the best of our knowledge, there are no systematic studies for evaluating tag SNP selection methods based on this metric. In this paper, using the leave-one-out cross-validation approach on the 1000 genome high-coverage dataset, we comprehensively evaluated four well-known tag SNP selection algorithms based on imputation accuracy. Our results showed that although all widely used methods for SNP array design can provide reasonable imputation accuracy, pairwise linkage disequilibrium based tag SNP selection algorithm achieves the best performance. Abstract: Equations of state are considered that correspond to a model of static concentration waves which describe order–disorder phase transitions of the substitution type in binary alloys. A phase diagram associated with a three-dimensional order parameter that describes ordering in Cu–Au alloys is presented as an example. It is established that the equations of state of the theory of concentration waves allow additional solutions not considered in existing theories of ordering based on the hypothesized predominant role of pair interactions. These solutions correspond to states that are partially ordered and stable over a wide area of the phase diagram. © 2021, Allerton Press, Inc.

Drones performing an autonomous mission need to adapt to frequent changes in their environment. In other words, they have to be context-aware. Most current context-aware systems are designed to distinguish between situations that have been pre-defined in terms of anticipated situation types and corresponding desired behavior types. This only partially benefits drone technology because many types of drone missions can be characterized by situations that are hard to predict at design time. We suggest combining context-awareness and data analytics for a better situation coverage. This could be achieved by using performance data (generated at real-time) as training data for supervised machine learning – it would allow relating situations to appropriate behaviors that a drone could follow. With the development of communication technologies and the increasing bandwidth of optical fibres and transmission speeds in current 5G and future 6G wireless networks, there is a growing demand for solutions organising traffic in such networks, taking into account both end-to-end transmissions and the possibility of data processing by edge services. The most pressing problems of today’s computer networks are not only bandwidth and transmission delays, but also security and energy consumption, which is becoming increasingly important in today’s climate. We are witnessing a tremendous expansion in computational power, leading to monumental technological advances with various practical applications. The need for parallelism originated from the limitations of single-processing performance. Increasing the transistor density on integrated circuits was the way to go, thus creating faster and more complex monolithic processors. However, these circuits approached their limits of hardware expansion, so the single-processor model has become unreliable and insufficient overall. This is how multicore architectures were born and, with them, the notion of parallel computing. Our research background in the Drop Computing paradigm and Interest in studying parallel programming paradigms encouraged us to propose a new approach towards parallel processing in mobile, ad-hoc, opportunistic networks. This paper adapts one fundamental message-passing standard for parallel architectures within the Drop Computing context. We define a new library DroMPI. Besides the challenges of parallel programming, the solution has to address the challenges imposed by hardware constraints, limited resources, and the decentralized model specific to Drop Computing.

StylizedNeRF: Consistent 3D Scene Stylization as Stylized NeRF via 2D-3D Mutual Learning

3D scene stylization aims at generating stylized images of the scene from arbitrary novel views following a given set of style examples, while ensuring consistency when rendered from different views. Directly applying methods for image or video stylization to 3D scenes cannot achieve such consistency. Thanks to recently proposed neural radiance fields (NeRF), we are able to represent a 3D scene in a consistent way. Consistent 3D scene stylization can be effectively achieved by stylizing the corresponding NeRF. However, there is a significant domain gap between style examples which are 2D images and NeRF which is an implicit volumetric representation. To address this problem, we propose a novel mutual learning framework for 3D scene stylization that combines a 2D image stylization network and NeRF to fuse the stylization ability of 2D stylization network with the 3D consistency of NeRF. We first pre-train a standard NeRF of the 3D scene to be stylized and replace its color prediction module with a style network to obtain a stylized NeRF. It is followed by distilling the prior knowledge of spatial consistency from NeRF to the 2D stylization network through an introduced consistency loss. We also introduce a mimic loss to supervise the mutual learning of the NeRF style module and fine-tune the 2D stylization decoder. In order to further make our model handle ambiguities of 2D stylization results, we introduce learnable latent codes that obey the probability distributions conditioned on the style. They are attached to training samples as conditional inputs to better learn the style module in our novel stylized NeRF. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is superior to existing approaches in both visual quality and long-range consistency. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Paper presents the results of a study of the self-timed fused multiply-add-subtract unit (FMAS) alternates. All FMAS alternates comply with the IEEE 754 standard and use the modified Booth algorithm to multiply two input 64-bit operands, followed by the addition and subtraction of the third operand. They differ from each other by internal signals self-timed coding: dual-rail, redundant ternary, or redundant quaternary code. The paper analyzes and compares their features, offers their optimized pipeline implementations and recommendations for their use. FMAS alternates have approximately the same performance but different hardware costs and layout sizes. © 2020 IEEE.
