Leveraging online shopping behaviors as a proxy for personal lifestyle choices: New insights into chronic disease prevention literacy

Objective: Ubiquitous internet access is reshaping the way we live, but it is accompanied by unprecedented challenges in preventing chronic diseases that are usually planted by long exposure to unhealthy lifestyles. This paper proposes leveraging online shopping behaviors as a proxy for personal lifestyle choices to improve chronic disease prevention literacy, targeted for times when e-commerce user experience has been assimilated into most people's everyday lives. Methods: Longitudinal query logs and purchase records from 15 million online shoppers were accessed, constructing a broad spectrum of lifestyle features covering various product categories and buyer personas. Using the lifestyle-related information preceding online shoppers' first purchases of specific prescription drugs, we could determine associations between their past lifestyle choices and whether they suffered from a particular chronic disease. Results: Novel lifestyle risk factors were discovered in two exemplars-depression and type 2 diabetes, most of which showed reasonable consistency with existing healthcare knowledge. Further, such empirical findings could be adopted to locate online shoppers at higher risk of these chronic diseases with decent accuracy [i.e., (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) AUC=0.68 for depression and AUC=0.70 for type 2 diabetes], closely matching the performance of screening surveys benchmarked against medical diagnosis. Conclusions: Mining online shopping behaviors can point medical experts to a series of lifestyle issues associated with chronic diseases that are less explored to date. Hopefully, unobtrusive chronic disease surveillance via e-commerce sites can grant consenting individuals a privilege to be connected more readily with the medical profession and sophistication. For routine pathology diagnosis and imaging-based biomedical research, Whole-slide image (WSI) analyses have been largely limited to a 2D tissue image space. For a more definitive tissue representation to support fine-resolution spatial and integrative analyses, it is critical to extend such tissue-based investigations to a 3D tissue space with spatially aligned serial tissue WSIs in different stains, such as Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) biomarkers. However, such WSI registration is technically challenged by the overwhelming image scale, the complex histology structure change, and the significant difference in tissue appearances in different stains. The goal of this study is to register serial sections from multi-stain histopathology whole-slide image blocks. We propose a novel translation-based deep learning registration network CGNReg that spatially aligns serial WSIs stained in H&E and by IHC biomarkers without prior deformation information for the model training. First, synthetic IHC images are produced from H&E slides through a robust image synthesis algorithm. Next, the synthetic and the real IHC images are registered through a Fully Convolutional Network with multi-scaled deformable vector fields and a joint loss optimization. We perform the registration at the full image resolution, retaining the tissue details in the results. Evaluated with a dataset of 76 breast cancer patients with 1 H&E and 2 IHC serial WSIs for each patient, CGNReg presents promising performance as compared with multiple state-of-the-art systems in our evaluation. Our results suggest that CGNReg can produce promising registration results with serial WSIs in different stains, enabling integrative 3D tissue-based biomedical investigations. © 2023 The Authors

Improving Sharpness-Aware Minimization with Fisher Mask for Better Generalization on Language Models

Fine-tuning large pretrained language models on a limited training corpus usually suffers from poor generalization. Prior works show that the recently-proposed sharpness-aware minimization (SAM) optimization method can improve the model generalization. However, SAM adds a perturbation to each model parameter equally (but not all parameters contribute equally to the optimization of training), which we argue is sub-optimal and will lead to excessive computation. In this paper, we propose a novel optimization procedure, namely FSAM1, which introduces a Fisher mask to improve the efficiency and performance of SAM. In short, instead of adding perturbation to all parameters, FSAM uses the Fisher information to identity the important parameters and formulates a Fisher mask to obtain the sparse perturbation, i.e., making the optimizer focus on these important parameters. Experiments on various tasks in GLUE and SuperGLUE benchmarks show that FSAM consistently outperforms the vanilla SAM by 0.67∼1.98 average score among four different pretrained models. We also empirically show that FSAM works well in other complex scenarios, e.g., fine-tuning on generation tasks or limited training data. Encouragingly, when training data is limited, FSAM improves the SAM by a large margin, i.e., up to 15.1. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we give a full classification of the separable hypersurfaces of constant sectional curvature in the Euclidean n-space Rn. In dimension n = 3, this classification was solved by Hasanis and López [Manuscripta Math. 166, 403-417 (2021)]. When n > 3, we prove that the separable hypersurfaces of null sectional curvature are three particular families of such hypersurfaces. Wireless train communication network (WLTCN) is a promising technology for intelligent rail vehicles. It is responsible for bearer of train control services (TCS) and passenger information services (PIS), with the latter mainly referring to multimedia services. The two services have notably different quality of service (QoS) requirements from traditional telecommunication services. To realize multiple services co-existence bearer with different quality of service (QoS) requirements in a single network, we propose a radio access network (RAN) slicing framework to fully utilize the bandwidth resource within a WLTCN in this paper. Based on the characteristics of TCS and PIS, the communications models for the two services are proposed. Next, the slicing strategy problem is formulated as the system bandwidth minimization problem, and then it is transformed into an equivalent problem as the non-convexity. We proposed a dual-decomposition based bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm to derive the closed-form expressions for the optimal resource allocation. Simulation results show that the proposed slicing strategy enables WLTCN to meet the QoS requirements for TCS and PIS with minimal bandwidth consumption.

Quantitative verification tools compute probabilities, expected rewards, or steady-state values for formal models of stochastic and timed systems. Exact results often cannot be obtained efficiently, so most tools use floating-point arithmetic in iterative algorithms that approximate the quantity of interest. Correctness is thus defined by the desired precision and determines performance. In this paper, we report on the experimental evaluation of these trade-offs performed in QComp 2020: the second friendly competition of tools for the analysis of quantitative formal models. We survey the precision guarantees—ranging from exact rational results to statistical confidence statements—offered by the nine participating tools. They gave rise to a performance evaluation using five tracks with varying correctness criteria, of which we present the results. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

For maintenance conform processing of brittle materials (ceramics, glass), the resulting chips are not continuous, as in the case of soft and tough materials, it is called a brittle chip removal range. In this machining zone, the quality of the produced surface may decline (appears the cracks and pitting of the material) and the tool life also decreases. When defining the cutting technology (technological parameters, tool edges, tool cooling / lubrication, etc.), chip removal must be carried out in the ductile range. However, due to tool wear, this range may cross the transition and then it can work in the brittle chip formation zone. In this paper, the machinability of zirconia oxid ceramics has been investigated. The aim of the research is to find out the correlation between the wear of the cutting tool, the volume change of the manufactured pockets and the transitions between the chip formation ranges measured by cracks and pitting deformations on the edge of the machined material. It was observed that they overlap to a large extent, consequently, these observed phenomena can be easily applied for tool wear and quality monitoring for realising condition-based maintenance, it is the main scientific contribution of the paper.

This paper presents a novel approach for head tracking in augmented reality (AR) flight simulators using an adaptive fusion of Kalman and particle filters. This fusion dynamically balances the strengths of both algorithms, leveraging Kalman filters for computational efficiency and particle filters for handling non-linearities based on real-time factors such as sensor noise and head movement patterns. Our method demonstrates superior tracking precision and reduced latency, making it particularly effective for immersive pilot training in AR-based flight simulations. While focused on flight simulation, our approach holds high potential for broader applications in other AR and virtual reality (VR) environments where precise, real-time head tracking is crucial. These results provide actionable design guidance for developers optimizing tracking systems in environments that require fast response times and high accuracy. Future extensions of this research could explore the generalization of our approach across diverse AR applications, including human-computer interaction (HCI), medical simulations, and gaming. © 1968-2012 IEEE.
