AsyCo: an asymmetric dual-task co-training model for partial-label learning

Partial-label learning(PLL) is a typical problem of weakly supervised learning, where each training instance is annotated with a set of candidate labels. Self-training PLL models achieve state-of-the-art performance but suffer from error accumulation problems caused by mistakenly disambiguated instances. Although co-training can alleviate this issue by training two networks simultaneously and allowing them to interact with each other, most existing co-training methods train two structurally identical networks with the same task, i.e., are symmetric, rendering it insufficient for them to correct each other due to their similar limitations. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an asymmetric dual-task co-training PLL model called AsyCo,which forces its two networks, i.e., a disambiguation network and an auxiliary network, to learn from different views explicitly by optimizing distinct tasks. Specifically, the disambiguation network is trained with a self-training PLL task to learn label confidence, while the auxiliary network is trained in a supervised learning paradigm to learn from the noisy pairwise similarity labels that are constructed according to the learned label confidence. Finally, the error accumulation problem is mitigated via information distillation and confidence refinement. Extensive experiments on both uniform and instance-dependent partially labeled datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of AsyCo.

This paper situates itself within the broader medical imaging field, focusing on applying generative modelling techniques for anomaly detection in retinal images. Given the complexity of retinal structures, detecting subtle abnormalities that signal disease requires models that can learn intricate patterns and discern deviations. This study explores the use of a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) to reconstruct healthy retinal images and identify anomalies through reconstruction loss and latent space analysis. With the use of a dataset with an imbalance of healthy and abnormal samples, the model was trained exclusively on healthy images to capture a baseline of normal retinal features. The findings suggest that while the VAE can effectively reconstruct broader structural patterns, it needs to work on finer details, impacting its sensitivity in anomaly detection. These results highlight the challenges inherent in applying generative models to medical diagnostics and emphasise the need for advanced techniques, such as contrastive learning, that may enhance feature extraction. Thus, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on the suitability of generative models for medical imaging and supports continued research into more nuanced methods to meet the specific demands of retinal anomaly detection. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The integration of artificial intelligence in agriculture has revolutionized farming practices, enhancing crop yields and resource efficiency. However, existing machine learning systems primarily focus on livestock, overlooking the impact of wildlife on agricultural productivity. This study addresses the gap by introducing two classification pipelines utilizing VGG16 and ResNet50 models for identifying five major classes of wildlife (foxes, rats, pigeons, raccoons, and squirrels) affecting agricultural sectors. A comprehensive dataset, comprising existing datasets and trail-camera footage, is compiled for training and validation. The results show that models trained on clear images struggle to generalize to real-world environments (the best accuracy being 48.19%). Grey-scaled models perform worse with a 2-6% decrease. Training on the training dataset and evaluating the validation set yields better average results for the weaker-performing model. This study contributes to invasive animal control in agriculture, providing a foundation for effective wildlife management with computer vision. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) have gained popularity as one of the main approaches for generating diverse and high-quality synthetic images. This study examines the suitability of evaluation metrics, specifically Inception Score and Fréchet Inception Distance (FID), for assessing these images. Particularly, the study focuses on the generation of synthetic images based on the MNIST handwritten digits dataset. Through the use of VAE-generated MNIST image samples, the study analyses the abovementioned metrics alongside alternative methods that can be used to assess image quality and diversity. The findings made from the study reveal the strengths and limitations of each metric in evaluating image quality and diversity. This paper underscores the need for tailored metrics to enhance the evaluation of generative models, while specifically using the performance of a VAE as the domain of investigation. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Most of the research conducted in action recognition is mainly focused on general human action recognition, and most of the available datasets support studies in general human action recognition. In more specific contexts, such as basketball, datasets that are as comprehensive and publicly available are limited. This study proposes taking three popular and mature methods in the field of action recognition, namely Temporal Segment Networks (TSN), Two-Stream CNN using Inflated 3D-convolutional Neural Networks (I3D) and Pose-C3D, and applying them to the SpaceJam dataset, which is a basketball-specific action dataset. All three experiments used pre-trained ImageNet models and were fine-tuned on the SpaceJam dataset. TSN was the oldest of the methods but obtained the best results of the three experiments, scoring a top-1 and top-5 accuracy of 59% and 96%, respectively. I3D was second best, with a top-1 and top-5 accuracy of 41% and 85%, respectively. Pose-C3D came in third, scoring a top-1 and top-5 accuracy of 15% and 50%, respectively. The results show that the models cannot distinguish significantly between some actions, such as ball in hand, pass and dribble. The study shows that it is feasible for context-specific fine-grain action recognition, but more needs to be done to discriminate against similar actions. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This paper examines the escalating ransomware threats faced by government-managed educational institutions, focusing on their vulnerabilities, case studies, and mitigation strategies. With the adoption of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies, schools increasingly expose their networks to cyber risks, making them attractive targets for cybercriminals. Case studies, including attacks on the Los Angeles Unified School District and the university of California, San Francisco, illustrate the profound impact of ransomware incidents and the diverse responses of institutions. Effective cybersecurity measures are crucial, emphasizing the need for prioritized spending, comprehensive security training, and advanced detection and response strategies. The role of government is also vital, as it develops legislation, guidelines, and funding opportunities to enhance educational cybersecurity. Recommendations include technical measures to secure networks and collaborative educational initiatives to share best practices. Ultimately, this research study underscores the necessity of continuous adaptation and government support in fortifying defences against ransomware threats. Small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) are obliged to adopt digital technologies to render services to their clients and remain competitive. The COVID-19 global crisis has accelerated the cyberfication of systems and services. The move to digital platforms has afforded SMMEs opportunities to offer their services to a broader geographical area. However, this has also presented opportunities for cybercriminals to invade the digital infrastructure. Adopting digital transformation has put SMMEs in a vulnerable position since they need to manage their cybersecurity while lacking the necessary skills and ICT infrastructure. The inability of SMMEs to defend themselves against cyberattacks compels them to outsource their security needs to external security service providers. These external security service providers offer security services based on a hierarchical operating model. Essential security services are offered at a lower level. If the paying clients require advanced security services, they may be provided as an add-on to the contractual agreement resulting in additional cost. This paper explores the active cyber defence (ACD) approach to enhance cybersecurity defence while minimising service costs. Therefore, the primary objective and outcome of this paper are to identify some of the essential drivers that will contribute towards developing the active cyber defence framework for SMMEs in developing countries. For purposes of clarity, essential drivers are the gaps highlighted during the literature review and will be referred to as "essential drivers" throughout the paper. The essential drivers, together with suggested recommendations, will be consolidated. The essential drivers were drawn from existing literature by going through peer-reviewed academic papers and company whitepapers. The most common application of artificial immune networks (AINs) is on unsupervised learning tasks. This is due to the fact that AINs are inspired by the adaptive immune system, which consists of a network of antibodies that self-organises to form a memory of external antigens. The self-organising nature of AINs makes them a natural approach for solving problems involving learning and adapting to patterns or structures present in a dataset to form an abstract representation. Training AINs in this fashion means that the dataset need not have class labels because the typical aim of the learning process is not to perform classification. However, there have been attempts to use AINs for classification tasks by considering the resulting clusters of antibodies as representative of the classes present in a dataset. This has also been done when applying AINs to the task of recognising handwritten characters. However, in all the approaches found in the literature, the common method was to leave the task of discovering classes to the AINs. Doing so is contrary to how other models are trained to do classification tasks where data samples are provided along with their class labels to guide the learning process. Therefore, this paper presents a novel supervised learning approach to training AINs for multi-class classification. The proposed approach was tested on the MNIST handwritten digits dataset and achieved a classification accuracy of 99.45%. © 2023 ACM.

In recent years, there have been intensifying cyber risks and volumes of cyber incidents prompting a significant shift in the cyber threat landscape. Both nation-state and non-state actors are increasingly resolute and innovative in their techniques and operations globally. These intensifying cyber risks and incidents suggest that cyber capability is inversely proportional to cyber risks, threats and attacks. Therefore, this confirms an emergent and critical need to adopt and invest in intelligence strategies, predominantly cyber counterintelligence (CCI), which is a multi-disciplinary and proactive measure to mitigate risks and counter cyber threats and cyber-Attacks. Concurrent with the adoption of CCI is an appreciation that requisite job roles must be defined and developed. Notwithstanding the traction that CCI is gaining, we found no work on a clear categorisation for the CCI job roles in the academic or industry literature surveyed. Furthermore, from a cybersecurity perspective, it is unclear which job roles constitute the CCI field. This paper stems from and expands on the authors prior research on developing a CCI Competence Framework. The proposed CCI Competence Framework consists of four critical elements deemed essential for CCI workforce development. In order of progression, the Framework s elements are: CCI Dimensions (passive-defensive, active-defensive, passive-offensive, active-offensive), CCI Functional Areas (detection, deterrence, deception, neutralisation), CCI Job Roles (associated with each respective Functional Area), and Tasks and Competences (allocated to each job role). Pivoting on prior research on CCI Dimensions and CCI Functional Areas, this paper advances a proposition on associated Job Roles in a manner that is both intelligible and categorised. To this end, the paper advances a five-step process that evaluates and examines Counterintelligence and Cybersecurity Job Roles and functions to derive a combination of new or existing Job Role

Researchers have recently achieved significant advances in deep learning techniques, which in turn has substantially advanced other research disciplines, such as natural language processing, image processing, speech recognition, and software engineering. Various deep learning techniques have been successfully employed to facilitate software engineering tasks, including code generation, software refactoring, and fault localization. Many studies have also been presented in top conferences and journals, demonstrating the applications of deep learning techniques in resolving various software engineering tasks. However,although several surveys have provided overall pictures of the application of deep learning techniques in software engineering,they focus more on learning techniques, that is, what kind of deep learning techniques are employed and how deep models are trained or fine-tuned for software engineering tasks. We still lack surveys explaining the advances of subareas in software engineering driven by deep learning techniques, as well as challenges and opportunities in each subarea. To this end, in this study, we present the first task-oriented survey on deep learning-based software engineering. It covers twelve major software engineering subareas significantly impacted by deep learning techniques. Such subareas spread out through the whole lifecycle of software development and maintenance, including requirements engineering, software development, testing, maintenance, and developer collaboration. As we believe that deep learning may provide an opportunity to revolutionize the whole discipline of software engineering, providing one survey covering as many subareas as possible in software engineering can help future research push forward the frontier of deep learning-based software engineering more systematically.
