Critical Infrastructure (CI) is the term used to describe assets that are of utmost importance, or in other words, essential in the functioning of an environment. Societies depend on their critical infrastructure in order to maintain and continuously improve on their standards of living. As these systems increasingly depend on cyber-technology, their security on networked environments become crucial. The modern smart grid has become part of CI through the enhancement it provides to regular electricity grid infrastructure. The application of biologically inspired systems to ensure security in aspects such as intrusion detection, access control, anomaly detection and others has become a widely researched field in when dealing with networked computing systems. This paper discusses the importance of CI, the application of artificial immune systems in the protection of CI information systems and proposes a new model for smart grid protection using biologically inspired concepts.

The computation of grain burning surface regression plays a very important role in the internal ballistic performance evaluation of solid rocket motor, however, the traditional methods such as geometry-based one could not handle the self-intersection and characteristic geometric element disappearing problems. This paper presents an effective and efficient framework to simulate 3D grain burning surface regression with level set method which is combined with Fast Marching technique to constrain the calculation area only around the burning surface. At last, a typical grain example is given by our framework to verify our method's effectiveness and efficiency. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications.

Background: Change propagation analysis helps predict the parts of the software that may be affected if a change is made. Existing research on change propagation focuses on design and code level changes. However, as a software evolves, the requirements that drive these changes also have intricate dependencies. Understanding the effect of these requirement dependencies on change prorogation is useful but not trivial. More than twenty requirements dependency types have been identified in the literature, however there still lacks an evaluation of the applicability of these dependency types in requirements and change propagation analysis. Aim: We aim to investigate whether these dependency types are useful for change propagation analysis. Method: We conducted a case study in a real-world industry project. This case study evaluates two representative dependency models covering twenty five types of dependencies. Results: Our initial evaluation has found that five dependency types are particularly useful in change propagation analysis and practitioners with different backgrounds have various viewpoints on change propagation. Thus change impact analysis should involve a wide range of stakeholders including project managers, requirements engineers, designers and developers. Conclusions: Our case study provides insights into requirements dependencies and their effects on change propagation analysis for both research and practice.

Categorizing the consecutive video frames into shots is the first and prerequisite step for contentbased video indexing and retrieval. With a considerable amount of research focusing on the shot boundary detection, traditional classification for common shot transitions has achieved satisfactory results. However, most of the existing algorithms are susceptible to the effect from thresholds, and can't avoid missing the long gradual shot transitions hard to detect. To address the two problems, a novel method which uses context feature vector and Tabu-SVM is presented in the paper. The major advantages of the proposed algorithm are quite accurate detection performance and optimization towards the classification model. Experimental results show that our proposed method is effective and robust, especially the boundaries of long transitions are detected with minimal inaccuracy. © 2012 Binary Information Press.

In this paper, a novel concept of multilayer synthesis and a general framework for texture synthesis method are presented. Within this framework, we first decompose the texture into the supposed pattern layer and material layer in the frequency domain by an E-texton extracting algorithm, then manipulate and extend them respectively according to their own personalities, and finally merge the newly synthesized pattern layer and material layer again to generate the final output. Experiment results show that our method not only greatly improves the synthesis quality for those cases that single-layer synthesis cannot handle well but also provides an ability of achieving various special synthesis effects.

Mutation analysis is widely employed to evaluate the effectiveness of various software testing techniques. In most situations, mutation operators are uniformly applied to the original programs, while the faults tend to be clustered in practice. This may result in the inappropriate simulation of faults, and thus cannot deliver the reliable evaluation results. To overcome this, we propose a distribution-aware mutation analysis technique and conducted empirical studies to investigate the impact of the mutation distribution on the effectiveness evaluation of testing techniques. As an illustration, we select the commonly practiced random testing technique and two versions of dynamic random testing techniques and apply them to testing Web services. Results of empirical studies suggest that the mutation distribution significantly affects the evaluation results. This observation further indicates that the effectiveness of testing techniques previously evaluated with the uniform mutation analysis needs further realignments. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose an OBDD-based algorithm called greedy clique decomposition, which is a new variable grouping heuristic method, to solve difficult SAT problems. We implement our algorithm and compare it with several state-of-art SAT solvers including Minisat, Ebddres and TTS. We show that with this new heuristic method, our implementation of an OBDD-based satisfiability solver can perform better for selected difficult SAT problems, whose conflict graphs possess a clique-like structure. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

As concept maps are useful for knowledge organization, representation and sharing, people used to draw concept maps by pen in their daily life. And some concept maps are closely related to physical world. In this paper, we propose a kind of context-aware hand-drawn concept map with RFID tags, which is especially useful for pen-based mobile devices. First, the structure of the hand-drawn concept map is extracted. And then users can assign RFID tags to concept nodes. With the RFID labeled concept nodes, concept maps are linked to the physical world, which can facilitate users’ understanding and retrieval of hand-drawn concept maps.
