PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) which provides execution environment for applications deployed in cloud is a key technology of cloud computing. However, to meet various requirements of different users on software platform under changing application environment, it's crucial to design and develop extensible, customizable and dynamic PaaS systems. In this paper, we analyze the software requirements of PaaS. Then a PaaS system architecture using R-OSGi as software foundation is designed. Finally, the presented approach is validated by a case study involving a web-based application E-bookstore. © 2010 ACM.

Recent pervasive systems are designed to be context-aware so that they are able to adapt to continual changes of their environments. Rule-based adaptation, which is commonly adopted by these applications, introduces new challenges in software design and verification. Recent research results have identified some faulty or unwanted adaptations caused by factors such as asynchronous context updating, and missing or faulty context reading. In addition, adaptation rules based on simple event models and propositional logic are not expressive enough to address these factors and to satisfy users' expectation in the design. We tackle these challenges at design stage by introducing sequential event patterns in adaptation rules to eliminate faulty and unwanted adaptations with features provided in the event pattern query language. We illustrate our approach using the recent published examples of adaptive applications, and show that it is promising on designing more reliable context-aware adaptive applications. © 2004 ACM.

OSGi is a widely used service-oriented platform which provides support for the development and execution of component-based e-business applications. The component monitoring of OSGi-based software is important to the software reliability analysis and abnormality diagnosis. However, current approaches not only bring significant overhead, but also lack interaction behavior analysis. This paper focuses on monitoring components from resource utilization and interaction behavior perspectives. We propose an approach to trace thread execution for updating the relationship between threads and bundles, so that the CPU and memory utilization of bundles are calculated, and the service invocation graph is updated at runtime. A prototype tool is implemented and applied in an application server OnceAS based on OSGi. The experiments using TPC-W benchmark validate our approach without significant resource and performance overhead. Furthermore, simulation results show that our approach is of high accuracy for monitoring CPU utilization of bundles. © 2010 IEEE.

As applications grow more and more complex, the current software faces a great challenge in dynamism. This paper proposes to modernize legacy software towards runtime plug-and-play architecture using service-oriented component model. Our object is to provide runtime plug-and-play feature for software to simplify development and adapt to changing execution environment. We propose a two-stage modernization approach and take OSGi as the foundation framework. After designing software architecture, modernization principles are discussed, and the presented approach is guided and validated by a case study involving the modernizing of a Java EE application server. © 2010 IEEE.

Cost effective development of secure software is a key goal for many software organizations as they seek to manage the risks of misbehaving software. Employing Formal Methods (FMs) in the Model-Based software engineering (MBSE) paradigm that systematically produces software systems through modeling, simulation, reuse and automation provides a reasonable approach for developing highly secure software in a productive manner. MBSE approaches introduce some complexities at the beginning of the lifecycle, but save substantial time in production and delivery by identifying and resolving defects/errors early and reducing rework. On the other hand, the expertise needed for FMs and the concomitant costs often inhibit their wide employment in securing large and complex software systems. In this paper, we report our experience with Formal Analysis and Design for engineering Security (FADES) an approach we introduced two years ago at this venue. Through systematic and automated transformation from semiformal requirements specifications to formal design, FADES facilitates embedding FMs into the development lifecycle of secure software systems. We outline the case studies and validation of FADES feasibility for the design and implementation of secure software systems. Promising experience with FADES was a necessary precursor to our work on generalizing FADES and our proposal to direct FADES toward being an MBSE approach. We discuss how the formality, transformation, reuse and automation in FADES may further enhance the MBSE-based production and delivery of secure software. © 2010 ACM.

With the great success of internet technology, internetware has become one of the most important software paradigms. But the open, dynamic and uncertain network makes it difficult to guarantee the performance of internetwares. Feed forward control method has been proved to be an effective mechanism for performance guarantee in advance, but it is difficult to work well in such a dynamic environment, in which performance aspects are highly changeable because for the load fluctuation and software updates. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive performance modeling approach to adapt the environment and provide finegrained performance guarantee. In our approach, the service invocation sequences corresponding to the load of internetware are constructed adaptively. And the service time of each service, which is the most performance parameter of our performance tool, is accurately acquired through Kalman filter. © 2010 ACM.

With the rapid development of e-business, web applications based on the Web have developed rapidly. Not only functional but also nonfunctional properties, also known as quality of service(QoS), is becoming the key to the web applications based on the Web. This paper firstly introduces some conceptions of web service and QoS, analyzes the insufficiencies of the current research of web service QoS. At the basis of this, a management framework for web service QoS based on multi-dimension QoS is presented. The applications of multi-dimension QoS in the framework are described and an application example is used to explain how the framework manages QoS of web service interaction in the practical application. ©2010 IEEE.

Soundness is a vital property of Interorganizational Logical Workflow Nets (ILWN) which can efficiently model cooperative systems. But even though each logical workflow net(LWN) is sound, soundness of arbitrary ILWN is hard to decide. This study analyzes the causes of leading to deadlocks of interface transitions and unboundedness of interface data places: the incorrect order of transitions related to interface data places, conditional routing construct and accumulation of tokens in interface data places. Based on the analysis,this paper defines the concept of T-fair LWNs and proposes an important subclass of ILWNs: T-fair ILWNs. For T-fair ILWNs, this study presents the inheritable conditions of soundness and gives a rigorous analysis approach according to their static net structures only. And then an approach of verifying the soundness of ILWNs composed of n T-fair LWNs is proposed. The concepts and techniques proposed in this study are illustrated with a useful example: an online bookstore and customer system. In addition, This paper discusses some cases which have fewer requirements for interface data. Based on that, a rather simple criteria condition is provided for T-fair ILWNs which are marked by restricted logical expressions. © 2010 IEEE.

The effective use of electronic health records (EHRs) can improve the quality of health care services and reduce associated costs. Establishing interoperable EHR systems has been recognized as an important objective in many countries and regions. Here we propose a framework based on three guidelines-the HL7 v3 CDA R2, Basic Medical Data Sets of China (BDS), and SI-LOINC-as a solution for establishing EHR interoperability according to the particular conditions of China's health care system. We also describe in detail the realization of interoperability at each level within this framework.

This paper considers the problem of modelling the topics in a sequence of images with known time stamp. Detecting and tracking of temporal data is an important task in multiple applications, such as finding hot research point from scientific literature, news article series analysis, email surveillance, search query log mining, etc. In contrast to existing works mainly focusing on text document collections, this paper considers mining temporal topic trends from image data set. An extension of the Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis(PLSA) model, which includes an additional variable associated with the time stamp to better model the temporal topics, is presented to track not only topics among images but also how topics change over time. Experiments show the effectiveness of this method. ©2010 IEEE.
