A fast algorithm for web service composition based on dynamic description logic

Dynamic Description Logic (DDL) is an extension of description logic. In dynamic description logic, both services and the service composition can be expressed in formulae, but there is still much room to promote the efficiency. In this study, a fast and effective method for web service composition is proposed for the services which perform in sequence. This method takes advantage of the partial order relation among services, dividing the service composition into two phases: On the first stage, the partial order diagram is generated in the registration server;on the second stage, the fast algorithm is run based on the partial order diagram to return web service composition to meet requests of users. By analysis and verification, the fast algorithm for web service composition presented in this study can be implemented in a linear time complexity, greatly shortening response time of the system. © 2010 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

In this paper, we propose a computational approach for adaptation in mission planning, an important process in the chain of command and control. In this area, it has been highly regarded that military missions are often dynamic and uncertain. This characteristic comes from the nature of battlefields where the factors of enemies and terrains are not easy to be determined. Hence, it is necessary to generate plans that can adapt quickly to the changes during the missions, while avoiding paying a high cost. In addressing such an adaptation process, the issue of multi-objectivity can not be avoided. Our approach first mathematically models the dynamic planning problem with two criteria: the mission execution time and the cost of operations. Based on this quantification, we introduce an evolutionary multi-objective mechanism to adapt the current solution to new situations resulted from changes. We carried out a case study on this newly proposed approach. A modified military scenario of a mission was used for testing. The obtained results strongly support our proposal in finding adaptive solution dealing with the changes. © 2010 IEEE.

Military missions are highly dynamic and uncertain. This characteristic comes from the nature of battlefields where such factors as enemies and terrains are not easy to be determined. Hence disruption of missions is likely to occur whenever happening a change. This requires generating plans that can adapt quickly to changes during execution of missions, while paying a less cost. In this paper, we propose a computational approach for adaptation of mission plans dealing with any possible disruption caused by changes. It first mathematically models the dynamic planning problem with two criteria: the mission execution time and the cost of operations. OSGi is a widely used service-oriented platform which provides support for the development and execution of component-based e-business applications. The component monitoring of OSGi-based software is important to the software reliability analysis and abnormality diagnosis. However, current approaches not only bring significant overhead, but also lack interaction behavior analysis. This paper focuses on monitoring components from resource utilization and interaction behavior perspectives. We propose an approach to trace thread execution for updating the relationship between threads and bundles, so that the CPU and memory utilization of bundles are calculated, and the service invocation graph is updated at runtime. A prototype tool is implemented and applied in an application server OnceAS based on OSGi. The experiments using TPC-W benchmark validate our approach without significant resource and performance overhead. Furthermore, simulation results show that our approach is of high accuracy for monitoring CPU utilization of bundles.

As applications grow more and more complex, the current software faces a great challenge in dynamism. This paper proposes to modernize legacy software towards runtime plug-and-play architecture using service-oriented component model. Our object is to provide runtime plug-and-play feature for software to simplify development and adapt to changing execution environment. We propose a two-stage modernization approach and take OSGi as the foundation framework. After designing software architecture, modernization principles are discussed, and the presented approach is guided and validated by a case study involving the modernizing of a Java EE application server.

In a publish/subscribe (pub/sub) system, information (referred to as events) published by publishers and interests submitted by subscribers are sent to the network, which conducts matching between events and interests, and only delivers those events satisfying the interests. When the pub/sub infrastructure is untrusted, it is often desirable to keep both events and interests secret from the pub/sub network. In this paper, we formulate this goal as the private subscription problem. We then describe cryptographic schemes to solve this problem in some types of publish/subscribe systems. The algorithms we present are efficient in that they are based on symmetric encryptions requiring O(n) cipher operations for a message of length n.

Compilers play an important role in software development, and it is quite necessary to perform abundant testing to ensure the correctness of compilers. A critical task in compiler testing is to validate the semantic-soundness property which requires consistence between semantics of source programs and behavior of target executables. For validating this property, one main challenging issue is generation of a test oracle. Most existing approaches fall into two main categories when dealing with this issue: reference-based approaches and assertion-based approaches. All these approaches have their weakness when new programming languages are involved or test automation is required. To overcome the weakness in the existing approaches, we propose a new automatic approach for testing compiler. Our approach is based on the technique of metamorphic testing, which validates software systems via so-called “metamorphic relations”. We select the equivalence-preservation relation as the metamorphic relation and propose an automatic metamorphic testing framework for compiler. We also propose three different techniques for automatically generating equivalent source programs as test inputs. Based on our approach, we developed a tool called Mettoc. Our mutation experiments show that Mettoc is effective to reveal compilers' errors in terms of the semantic-soundness property. Moreover, the empirical results also reveal that simple approaches for constructing test inputs are not weaker than complicated ones in terms of fault-detection capability. We also applied Mettoc in testing a number of open source compilers, and two real errors in GCC-4.4.3 and UCC-1.6 respectively have been detected by Mettoc.

Low-power Wireless Networks (LWNs) have become increasingly available for mission-critical applications such as security surveillance and disaster response. In particular, emerging low-power wireless audio platforms provide an economical solution for ad hoc voice communication in emergency scenarios. In this paper, we develop a system called Adaptive Stream Multicast (ASM) for voice communication over multi-hop LWNs. ASM is composed of several novel components specially designed to deliver robust voice quality for multiple sinks in dynamic environments: 1) an empirical model to automatically evaluate the voice quality perceived at sinks based on current network condition, 2) a feedback-based Forward Error Correction scheme where the source can adapt its coding redundancy ratio dynamically in response to the voice quality variation at sinks, 3) a Tree-based Opportunistic Routing (TOR) protocol that fully exploits the broadcast opportunities on a tree based on novel forwarder selection and coordination rules, and 4) a distributed admission control algorithm that ensures the voice quality guarantees when admitting new voice streams. ASM has been implemented on a low-power hardware platform and extensively evaluated through experiments on a testbed of 18 nodes.

Design patterns have been widely accepted as a solution for solving recurring design problems in object-oriented development. Reifications of design patterns can vary from one development environment to another, and use of inappropriate reifications may impose a serious threat to quality of a software system. In this paper, we propose an approach to applying the profile mechanism in reifying a design pattern. Central to this approach are stereotypes that are defined in a profile and used to represent different roles in a design pattern. Developers can apply these stereotypes in their application model when design patterns are used. The advantage of the profile mechanism is that developers can 1) define their own reification of a pattern in a profile based on a specific software system, and 2) find errors in an application model via the conformance checking of the model against the profile. More importantly, we apply our existing tool called ICER, which is based on the profile mechanism, to provide automatic checking for the application of design patterns. To illustrate the advantage of the profile mechanism supported by ICER, we show the different reifications for the Observer pattern. Last, experimental results show that ICER does not suffer from the scalability problem as the size of an application model increases.
