Recent years have witnessed the pilot deployments of audio or low-rate video wireless sensor networks for a class of mission-critical applications including search and rescue, security surveillance, and disaster management. In this paper, we report the design and implementation of Quality-aware Voice Streaming (QVS) for wireless sensor networks. QVS is built upon SenEar, a new sensor hardware platform we developed for high-bandwidth wireless audio communication. QVS comprises several novel components, which include an empirical model for online voice quality evaluation and control, dynamic voice compression/duplication adaptation for lossy wireless links, and distributed stream admission control that exploits network capacity for rate allocation. We have extensively tested QVS on a 20-node network deployment. Our experimental results show that QVS delivers satisfactory voice quality under a range of realistic settings while achieving high network capacity utilization. © 2009 IEEE.

Image warping techniques are frequently used to render 3D scenes from images with depth information for VR applications. In this paper, we first propose a spherical representation of image-based models call the Spherical Depth Image (SDI). With two Warping Equations, at runtime we then pre-warp the image onto a view-dependent plane to get an intermediate image, which is further rendered onto the target image plane using standard texture mapping. Compared with other representations, SDI is sampled uniformly and completely, therefore it can reduce much unnecessary rendering overhead and the resultant rendered image is hole-free. To speed up the computation and utilize hardware's rasterization function for image interpolation, we transport the pre-warping process into GPU's Vertex Shader. Besides, high quality rendering effect in Pixel Shader can also be achieved as traditional geometry based methods. Finally, we overcome the approach's limitation of viewing region, and design a real-time walkthrough system with LOD representations of the SDIs. We present a particle-based method for viscoelastic fluids simulation. In the method, based on the traditional Navier-Stokes equation, an additional elastic stress term is introduced to achieve viscoelastic flow behaviors, which have both fluid and solid features. Benefiting from the Lagrangian nature of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, large flow deformation can be handled more easily and naturally. And also, by changing the viscosity and elastic stress coefficient of the particles according to the temperature variation, the melting and flowing phenomena, such as lava flow and wax melting, are achieved. The temperature evolution is determined with the heat diffusion equation. The method is effective and efficient, and has good controllability. Different kinds of viscoelastic fluid behaviors can be obtained easily by adjusting the very few experimental parameters. Copyright © 2009 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc.

Learning systems are very effective tools for discovering knowledge from databases. Most symbolic learning systems face difficulties when discovering knowledge from large databases. Adapting the learning systems to cope with large databases is the traditional solution to overcome these limitations. This paper evaluates a new methodology for partitioning the representation space. The method selects an irrelevant attribute, determined by a utility function, to partition the representation space. Since irrelevant attributes are not needed to describe concepts learned from the original data, the knowledge discovered from all subspaces should be independent of such an attribute. If the representation space is partitioned by a relevant attribute, the knowledge discovered from all subspaces are combined simply using information about that attribute. The method is analyzed using C5 learning system, or See5.

We present a new method for adding furry effects for cartoon characters in images and videos. We synthesize furry stylized textures based on 3D texel structure. Given an image or a video as input, realistic fur texels are generated and mapped onto the region of interest(ROI) which is obtained using the Snake method. The 3D texels are rendered using Ray Marching algorithm on GPU for fast synthesizing the furry stylized textures. Specifically, fur texels of triangular prism shape are generated in order to be possibly mapped onto the traditional triangular mesh. Gaussian function is also introduced to provide parameters for users to control the fuzz degree. For the video applications, we use SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm to extract feature points and calculate the feature matching of the ROI along with the timeline. Experimental results show that the presented method is able to synthesize the furry stylized textures in the input image and generate dynamic fur in a video for better realistic rendering. © 2009 IEEE.

In China, there are some wide and environmentdisgusting offshore, which is not easy for manpower or ordinary ship to monitor. What’s more, ship with special materials is too expensive. This paper introduces a Human-Robot named OFFSHORE_ 1. It’s a half-intelligence robot, which can be used in the disgusting offshore environment. The robot can explore remote environment for monitoring, research and object identify etc.. Conclusion is drawn from the experiment that this robot can overcome the defect of manpower monitoring, share cost and improve the effect of monitoring, thus implements real-time and effective monitoring of the offshore.

Learning user preferences is a complex area, especially difficult for performing experiments - every person is different and has different preferences, which often change in time. In this paper, we propose a method for testing a preference learning method that is in a sense more general than our previous attempts of testing an inductive method. We address the issue of limited rating set that results on larger datasets into more objects with the highest rating.

In this paper we present a fuzzy system which provides a fuzzy classification of textual web reports. Our approach is based on usage of third party linguistic analyzers, our previous work on web information extraction and fuzzy inductive logic programming. Main contributions are formal models and prototype implementation of the system and evaluation experiments.

Logic Petri nets (LPN) can describe and analyze batch processing function and passing value indeterminacy in cooperative systems and its practical applications are shown with some nontrivial examples. This study focuses on the analysis of the modeling power of LPNs and the equivalency between LPNs and Petri nets with inhibitor arcs (IPN). The equivalency is proved formally and a constructing algorithm of equivalent IPNs from LPNs is proposed based on the disjunctive normal forms of logic input/output expressions. Moreover, the size of an LPN model is smaller than that of the equivalent IPN model. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Modeling and design for dynamic workflows based on flexible activities

A rapidly changing environment forces the workflow management systems to change their workflow processes ever more frequently. In order to improve the flexibility of workflow management systems, a dynamic workflow model is proposed in this study. The concepts of flexible activities and historical execution information are put forward to construct dynamic workflow models in this method. Each flexible activity is used to encapsulate a group of indeterminate factors, e.g., the constraint rules and optional sub-activities when reifying a flexible activity. Historical execution information is the executive logging of a previous workflow instance. Two algorithms are put forward to guarantee the correctness of sub-workflows and the global control of dynamic processes. Furthermore, a simple example is given to validate the proposed dynamic workflow model. However, this method cannot perform well if there existing loop structures in sub-workflows and the reifying processes of flexible activities are not intelligent enough. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.
