Previous years have seen rapid growth of online services that rely on large-scale server clusters to handle high volume of requests. Such clusters must adaptively control the CPU utilizations of many processors in order to maintain desired soft real-time performance and prevent system overload in face of unpredictable workloads. This paper presents DUC-LB, a novel distributed utilization control algorithm for cluster-based soft real-time applications. Compared to earlier works on utilization control, a distinguishing feature of DUC-LB is its capability to handle system dynamics caused by load balancing, which is a common and essential component of most clusters today. Simulation results and control-theoretic analysis demonstrate that DUC-LB can provide robust utilization control and effective load balancing in large-scale clusters

As a key part of next generation network (NGN) infrastructure, next generation broadband satellite networks are expected to support a variety of applications with diverse performance requirements. Research on the onboard routing protocols is the primary step to meet the various QoS related requirements, which becomes feasible with the rapid development of onboard processing capacity of satellite. In the paper, we evaluate the more fundamental metric of convergence rate of RIP, OSPF, DRDT and MLSR routing protocols under various satellite network scenarios based on simulation. Though many literatures have argued that the routing protocols running in terrestrial networks do not fit well for satellite networks, this paper presents the simulation-based evaluation of typical terrestrial routing protocols in satellite settings quantitatively and serves as a benchmark for satellite network routing protocol development and performance evaluation

Connectors are used to realize component interactions in component systems. Apart from their primary function, which is mediating the communication, their implementation can also support additional features that, while unrelated to the primary function, may benefit from their placement in connectors. Such features are often optional in the sense that they can be activated and deactivated at run-time. The problem is that even if they are disabled, their very presence in the connector incurs certain overhead. In this paper, we describe an approach to eliminate this overhead by reconfiguration of the connector implementation. Besides connectors, the approach is applicable to similar technologies such as reflective middleware and other architecture-based component systems and frameworks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

To use verification tools for reliability analysis of a software component, it is desirable to specify the behavior of the component by a finite-state model. This is often impossible at design time if the component practices unbounded parallelism. In that case, the behavior of the component widely depends on the environment the component is instantiated in. Unfortunately, covering all possible environments results in an infinite-state model. In this paper, we introduce a solution based on the concept of template-to-model transformation: at design time, a developer describes the behavior of the component by a behavior template, which is automatically transformed into a concrete behavior model when the component is instantiated in an environment. As the concrete behavior model is finite-state, it is a suitable input for verification tools

The analysis and verification of security protocols is an important field in the security of computer nowadays. Model checking technique to the analysis of security protocols has proved remarkably successful, which involves three parts: modeling of system behaviors, description of system properties and system verification. Modeling of system behaviors is a highly challenging task because of its complexity, especially modeling of intruder capability. A general method is proposed to construct a Promela model of the cryptographic protocol, and make use of this way to model the Helsinki protocol. The Promela model of Helsinki protocol is automatically verified by model checker Spin and an attack to Helsinki protocol has successfully been found. Experimental result shows the verification validity via message sequence chart. The general method may become a good guideline for verifying similar cryptographic protocols

H.264 is the new multimedia compression standard developed by VCEG and MPEG. In order to maximize the compression performance, H.264 adopts RDO mode decision techniques at the cost of very remarkable computational complexity. To reduce encoder complexity associated with the intra-prediction mode selection, in this paper, a fast intra prediction mode selection scheme is proposed. It is based on three improvement parts, including improvement of the intra prediction algorithm structure, fast selection between intra 4×4 block mode and intra 16×16 block mode, and the fast 4×4 luma block mode selection based on the luma similarity between reference pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms Pan's method, and compared with the test model JM8.6 provided by JVT, the proposed scheme reduces 83.10% coding time for intra frames and 50.94% coding time for all the frames while maintaining the PSNR and bit rate. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Unit test is major part of the software quality assurance. The unit test quality directly affects the software quality. The software enterprise takes more and more attention on unit test. However, beside the mature technical, tools and process of unit test, the effect of unit test is not very good. Base on an overall analysis of the unit test work, the paper indicates that people is the kernel and ties of the test jobs. The key point to improve the unit test level is the improvement of the Personal Capability of test personnel. The paper introduces the concepts of capability and Personal Capability in unit test. The three characters of Personal Capability for unit test are test efficiency, test quality and forecast. Personal Capability is reflected and developed by specific activities and practices. Three key practices for capability improvements are plan practice, track practice and evaluate and improve practice. The paper introduces three key practices in detail. An enterprise case is studied and the result shows that the experience of Personal Capability improvement process will provide foundation for next turn of improvement activities, and act as reference to the software enterprise that want to improve their unit test process.

Certificateless public key cryptography (CL-PKC) as a new paradigm was introduced by Al-Riyami and Paterson in Asiacrypt 2003, which removes the use of certificate to ensure the authenticity of the user's public key in the traditional certificate-based public key cryptography and also overcomes the key escrow problem in the identity-based public key cryptography. Motivated by the conflict between authenticity and privacy in the digital signature, the notion of limited verifier signature was introduced by Araki et al.. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we give the first precise definition and security notions for certificateless convertible limited verifier signature and then the first concrete signature scheme which is provably secure under the CDH assumption. We also extend our signature scheme into a certificateless convertible two limited verifiers scheme for certain applications at the end of this paper

In this paper, circuit design of an arithmetic module applied to cryptography - modulo multiplicative inverse is presented and implemented using FPGA hardware technology. This modular arithmetic function contains iterative computations of division, multiplication and accumulation with variable loop times. In this paper a novel approach is described for tree visualization using nested circles. The brother nodes at the same level are represented by externally tangent circles;the tree nodes at different levels are displayed by using 2D nested circles or 3D nested cylinders. A new layout algorithm for tree structure is described. It provides a good overview for large data sets. It is easy to see all the branches and leaves of the tree. The new method has been applied to the visualization of file systems. Copyright 2006 ACM.
