A very-low-profile (VLP), two-antenna system formed by two identical monopoles facing each other with a decoupling inductor is presented. The two-monopole design capable of covering the 2.4-GHz (2400-2484 MHz), 5.2-GHz (5150-5350 MHz), and 5.8-GHz (5725-5825 MHz) wireless local area network (WLAN) bands merely occupied a small size of 5 mm h 42 mm. The two antennas were closely packed with 1-mm (0.008λ at 2.4 GHz) spacing only and required nearly no separation distance. An inductor connecting the open ends of the monopoles was employed to reduce the mutual coupling in the 2.4 GHz band. Over the 5.2/5.8 GHz bands was good isolation achieved owing to the devised arrangement of the antenna current nulls of higher-order resonance.

The Open databases Integration for Materials design (OPTIMAdE) application programming interface (API) empowers users with holistic access to a growing federation of databases, enhancing the accessibility and discoverability of materials and chemical data. Since the first release of the OPTIMAdE specification (v1.0), the API has undergone significant development, leading to the v1.2 release, and has underpinned multiple scientific studies. In this work, we highlight the latest features of the API format, accompanying software tools, and provide an update on the implementation of OPTIMAdE in contributing materials databases. We end by providing several use cases that demonstrate the utility of the OPTIMAdE API in materials research that continue to drive its ongoing development. © 2024, CC BY.

Solving the strength-ductility tradeoff in the medium-entropy NiCoCr alloy via interstitial strengthening of carbon

Interstitial solid strengthening is an effective strategy to harden metallic materials, however, it usually deteriorates the ductility. Here, we report that addition of carbon into the medium-entropy NiCoCr alloy successfully enhances the strength at no expense of ductility. It was found that up to 0.75 at.% carbon was completely solid-solutionized in (NiCoCr) 100-x C x (x = 0, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 at.%) without formation of any carbides. With the increase of carbon content from 0 to 0.75 at.%, the yield and fracture strength were increased from 242 to 347 MPa to 727 and 862 MPa, respectively, whilst the ductility kept as high as about 75%. It is noteworthy that the integral of the stress over strain for the alloy with 0.75 at.% carbon reaches a value of 59 GPa %, surmounting the level of many reported multi-principal elements alloys. Our analysis indicates that carbon addition increases stacking fault energy, thus delaying occurrence of twinning and decreasing the thickness of twin lamellas. At the early deformation stage, carbon decreases the stress localization and stimulates dislocation multiplication. After occurrence of deformation twinning, finer twinning structure in the alloys added with carbon not only can obstacle and trigger more dislocations, but also transfer plastic deformation more efficiently, thus promoting the twinning process, postponing the plastic instability and eventually giving rise to a more pronounced work-hardening. Our results not only have important implications for understanding the solid solution strengthening mechanism in medium-entropy alloys, but also shed lights on developing advanced metallic alloys with a unique combination of strength and ductility.

To embrace Gbps data rate with higher through-put performance, 4×4 wireless local area network (WLAN) antennas embedded in the notebook computers can be foreseen in the near future. This will create more challenges for antenna engineers because antenna real estate is already a very limited commodity for current large screen-to-body-ratio notebooks. To deploy more antennas, the single antenna itself must be even smaller and yet does not compromise on its antenna performance. In this paper, a small-sized, 2.4/5-GHz WLAN monopole antenna well suited for large screen-to-body-ratio notebook computers is presented. The antenna height was 4 mm only and constructed on a low-cost dielectric substrate of size 4 mm × 30 mm to be easily placed within the ultra-thin bezel surrounding the top edge of the notebook display. The antenna consisted of two radiating arms of unequal lengths to generate the lower and the higher bands. By properly loading each radiating arm with a shorting chip inductor, the proposed antenna was capable of generating the 2.4-GHz (2400-2484 MHz) and the 5-GHz (5150-5825 MHz) WLAN bands with a very low antenna profile. details of the proposed design are described and discussed in the article.

We report on a subpercent scale determination using the omega baryon mass and gradient-flow methods. The calculations are performed on 22 ensembles of Nf=2+1+1 highly improved, rooted staggered sea-quark configurations generated by the MILC and CalLat Collaborations. The valence quark action used is Möbius domain wall fermions solved on these configurations after a gradient-flow smearing is applied with a flowtime of tgf=1 in lattice units. The ensembles span four lattice spacings in the range 0.06≲a≲0.15 fm, six pion masses in the range 130≲mπ≲400 MeV and multiple lattice volumes. On each ensemble, the gradient-flow scales t0/a2 and w0/a and the omega baryon mass amΩ are computed. The dimensionless product of these quantities is then extrapolated to the continuum and infinite volume limits and interpolated to the physical light, strange and charm quark mass point in the isospin limit, resulting in the determination of t0=0.1422(14) fm and w0=0.1709(11) fm with all sources of statistical and systematic uncertainty accounted for. The dominant uncertainty in both results is the stochastic uncertainty, though for t0 there are comparable continuum extrapolation uncertainties. For w0, there is a clear path for a few-per-mille uncertainty just through improved stochastic precision, as recently obtained by the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal Collaboration.

Integrated approaches for managing natural resources are said to meet increasing demand for water, energy, and food, while maintaining the integrity of ecosystems, and ensuring equitable access to resources. The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus has been proposed as a cross-sectoral approach to manage trade-offs and exploit synergies that arise among these sectors. Although not initially included as a component of the Nexus, the role of nature in sustaining the water, energy, and food sectors and in regulating their interrelationships is increasingly recognised by Nexus researchers and practitioners. To converge existing approaches that integrate nature into the WEF Nexus and suggest a common framework, we – an interdisciplinary group of natural resources management researchers and systems thinkers from the European research network NEXUSNET COST Action – followed a collaborative process of knowledge creation combining literature review, elicitation of expert opinion and collaborative writing. Our results reveal a multiplicity of concepts utilised in the literature to represent, partially or fully, "nature" in the Nexus, such as "environment", "ecosystems", "ecosystem services", "social-ecological systems", and "biodiversity". disparity was also found in the role attributed to nature, represented by three key paradigms: (1) ecosystems as the fourth component of an expanded Nexus, i.e., the WEF-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus;(2) ecosystems as a foundational layer to the Nexus;and (3) the WEF Nexus as a central component of social-ecological systems (SES). By creating a hybrid approach that brings together the benefits of the respective paradigms, we present a forward-looking WEFE Nexus conceptualisation. This paradigm expands the mutual interlinkages among water, energy and food to the entirety of SES, thus acknowledging the social-ecological processes that are affected by and affect the WEF Nexus. The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

Evolution of nanosized precipitates in typical (CoCrFeNi) 94 Ti 2 Al 4 high entropy alloys under irradiation and its effect on the irradiation resistance were investigated in detail. The as-solutionized samples and the aged samples with massive nanosized precipitates were irradiated at ambient temperatures with a dose ranging from 10 to 49 dpa of 4 MeV Au ions. It was found that the ordered precipitates became disordered quickly at the early stage under 10 dpa irradiation, accompanying with the dissolution process which became more and more severer at higher doses. After irradiation, the hardness slightly changed in the aged specimens containing massive precipitates, but increased by> 30% in the as-solutionized ones with no precipitates. The obvious hardness increment in the as-solutionized samples is due to the creation of defects while the small variations of the hardness in the aged specimens can be ascribed to the disordering and dissolution of precipitates. In addition, the size of dislocation loops induced by the irradiation in the aged specimens is much smaller than that in the as-solutionized samples. We confirmed that presence of the nanosized precipitates delayed defect evolution and reduced the sizes of dislocation loops.

Many countries have secured larger quantities of COVId-19 vaccines than their populace is willing to take. This abundance and variety of vaccines created a historical moment to understand vaccine hesitancy better. Never before were more types of vaccines available for an illness and the intensity of vaccine-related public discourse is unprecedented. Yet, the heterogeneity of hesitancy by vaccine types in certain segments of society has been neglected so far, even though factual or believed vaccine characteristics and patient attributes are known to influence acceptance. In this paper, we address this problem by analysing acceptance and assessment of five vaccine types using information collected with a nationally representative survey (N=1000) at the end of the third wave of the COVId-19 pandemic in Hungary, where a unique portfolio of vaccines were available to the public in large quantities. Our special case enables us to quantify revealed preferences across vaccine types since one could evaluate a vaccine unacceptable and even could reject an assigned vaccine to wait for another type. We find that the source of information that respondents trust characterizes their attitudes towards vaccine types differently and leads to divergent vaccine hesitancy. Believers of conspiracy theories were significantly more likely to evaluate the mrNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) unacceptable while those who follow the advice of politicians evaluate vector-based (AstraZeneca and Sputnik) or whole-virus vaccines (Sinopharm) acceptable with higher likelihood. We illustrate that the rejection of non-desired and re-selection of preferred vaccines fragments the population by the mrNA versus other type of vaccines while it generally improves the assessment of the received vaccine. These results highlight that greater variance of available vaccine types and individual free choice are desirable conditions that can widen the acceptance of vaccines in societies. © 2021, CC BY.

Misorientation-dependent solute enrichment at interfaces and its contribution to defect formation mechanisms during laser additive manufacturing of superalloys

A vital issue during selective laser melting of nonweldable polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys is the formation of microcracks. These are cracks occurring during the last stage of solidification and only at high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). Solute enrichment to the remaining interdendritic liquid and its partial back-diffusion into the solid contributes to the crack nucleation mechanism. Here we use atom probe tomography coupled with transmission Kikuchi diffraction to determine the misorientation and chemical composition profiles across HAGBs (with and without cracks) and across crack-free low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). The Gibbsian interfacial excess of solutes (mainly B, C, Si, and Zr) is at least two times higher at the HAGB compared to the LAGB. The chemical profiles show the opposite behavior to established model predictions of the last stage of solidification. Our diffusion calculations elucidate that the chemical profiles are influenced by both microsegregation (of Ti, Nb, and Si) during solidification and solid-state segregation (of B, C, and Zr) during cooling. The chemical profiles in the topmost layer indicate a negligible effect of remelting and reheating. Except for Ti-rich carbides, no secondary phases are found. Additionally, we study an alloy with a reduced content of Zr and Si (by at least 60 wt. %), relative to the standard IN738LC composition. We achieved a 99% reduction in crack length per unit area. However, the grain boundary enrichment of Zr and Si in the modified alloy was similar to the standard alloy. Based on these findings, we critically discuss the contribution of various mechanisms proposed for solidification cracking.
