Motivation is the driving force to initiate and sustain learner participation in e-Learning environment. Since identifying the extent of motivation is important, this study aims to develop an e-Learning Motivation Index that quantitatively measures motivation concisely and intuitively, capturing the different impact of factors on learner participation. Index development starts with the General Function Establishment. Grounded in the Expectancy-Value Theory and the Self-Regulated Learning Theory, learning motivation is defined as value, cost, cognitive regulation, and scheduling. These act as motivational factors impacting on learner participation, defined in the General Function. Measures for independent and dependent variables are designed to utilize a survey and an experiment on MoodleCloud. After an experiment, analysis using SPSS provides the result that value and scheduling are two factors that significantly impact learner participation. The more learners value learning and have scheduling skills, the more they participate in e-Learning. These results were expressed in a regression function and normalized to derive an e-Learning Motivation Index. This index can assist learners in building learning strategies and educational providers in providing tailored strategies for learners’ characteristics to promote learner participation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

A comprehensive understanding of the topology of the electric power transmission network (EPTN) is essential for reliable and robust control of power systems. While existing research primarily relies on domain-specific methods, it lacks data-driven approaches that have proven effective in modeling the topology of complex systems. To address this gap, this paper explores the potential of data-driven methods for more accurate and adaptive solutions to uncover the true underlying topology of EPTNs. First, this paper examines Gaussian Graphical Models (GGM) to create an EPTN network graph (i.e., undirected simple graph). Second, to further refine and validate this estimated network graph, a physics-based, domain-specific refinement algorithm is proposed to prune false edges and construct the corresponding electric power flow network graph (i.e., directed multi-graph). The proposed method is tested using a synchrophasor dataset collected from a two-area, four-machine power system simulated on the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) platform. Experimental results show both the network and flow graphs can be reconstructed using various operating conditions and topologies with limited failure cases. © 2024 IEEE.

The approach of (fixed-) time-synchronized control (FTSC) aims at attaining the outcome where all the system state-variables converge to the origin simultaneously/synchronously. This type of outcome can be the highly essential performance desired in various real-world high-precision control applications. Toward this objective, this article proposes and investigates the development of a time-synchronized reinforcement learning algorithm (TSRL) applicable to a particular class of first- and second-order affine nonlinear systems. The approach developed here appropriately incorporates the norm-normalized sign function into the optimal system control design, leveraging on the special properties of this norm-normalized sign function in attaining time-synchronized stability and control. Concurrently, the actor–critic framework in reinforcement learning (RL) is invoked, and the dual quantities of system control and gradient term of the cost function are decomposed with appropriate time-synchronized control items and unknown actor/critic part and to be learned independently. By additionally employing the adaptive dynamic programming technique, the solution of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation is iteratively approximated under this actor–critic framework. As an outcome, the proposed TSRL method optimizes the system control while attaining the notable time-synchronized convergence property. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated to be effectively applicable via detailed numerical studies and on an autonomous vehicle nonlinear system motion control problem. © 2020 IEEE.

We have developed a fast method of using Multiple Scattering Theory-Broadband Green’s Function (BBGF-MST) for band field calculations. In this paper, we successfully extended the method to the vector electromagnetic case of 3D periodic structures. In the MST-BBGF approach, the broadband transformation to vector spherical waves for 3D is derived using the Broadband Green’s function. The band eigenvalue problem is expressed in terms of the single scatterer T matrix which is independent of the periodic lattice nor the Bloch vector. For the first five bands, the dimension of the KKR eigen equation is merely 6, as 6 vector spherical waves are utilized for the scattered waves. We make extensive comparisons of the results with the commercial software COMSOL in both accuracy and computation efficiency. The CPU requirement on a standard laptop for the MST-BBGF method is merely 0.309 seconds for the first 5 bands. The MST-BBGF method is accurate and is at least two orders of magnitude faster than commercial software COMSOL. In the band field calculations, we employ the approach of extended coefficient to use the low order eigenvector of 6 to extend to 240 vector spherical wave coefficients without the need of recalculating the eigenvalue nor the eigenvector of the KKR equation. The extended coefficients approach gives accurate band field solutions for the entire (0, 0, 0) cell. © 2024, Electromagnetics Academy. All rights reserved.

The rapid development and usage of digital technologies in modern intelligent systems and applications bring critical challenges on data security and privacy. It is essential to allow cross-organizational data sharing to achieve smart service provisioning, while preventing unauthorized access and data leak to ensure end users' efficient and secure collaborations. Federated Learning (FL) offers a promising pathway to enable innovative collaboration across multiple organizations. However, more stringent security policies are needed to ensure authenticity of participating entities, safeguard data during communication, and prevent malicious activities. In this paper, we propose a Decentralized Federated Graph Learning (FGL) with Lightweight Zero Trust architecture (ZTA) model, named DFGL-LZTA, to provide context-aware security with dynamic defense policy update, while maintaining computational and communication efficiency in resource-constrained environments, for highly distributed and heterogeneous systems in next-generation networking. Specifically, with a re-designed lightweight ZTA, which leverages adaptive privacy preservation and reputation-based aggregation together to tackle multi-level security threats (e.g., data-level, model-level, and identity-level attacks), a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) based Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agent is introduced to enable the real-time and adaptive security policy update and optimization based on contextual features. A hierarchical Graph Attention Network (GAT) mechanism is then improved and applied to facilitate the dynamic subgraph learning in local training with a layer-wise architecture, while a so-called sparse global aggregation scheme is developed to balance the communication efficiency and model robustness in a P2P manner. Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) faces significant challenges in achieving high efficiency and stable output power for charging mobile devices like EVs. Using circular pads (CP) as the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) and a self-oscillating controlled inverter, this paper demonstrates a robust WPT system that maintains high constant transfer efficiency and output power in a defined region regardless of coupling coefficient variations without communication between Tx and Rx or control circuits for the receiver side. In contrast to couplers with non-identical Tx and Rx pads and multiple decoupled coils in the Rx pad, the compact CP-CP magnetic coupler with a single identical coil on the Tx and Rx is more robust at a wider transfer distance (air gap) and lateral and rotational misalignment between the Tx and Rx. The proposed 1-kW robust WPT system with up to a 20 cm air gap between the Tx and Rx and up to 12 cm lateral misalignment in all directions at a 15 cm air gap and all degrees of rotational misalignment can tolerate coupling variations and achieve constant output power with 93% constant transfer efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

Close-space sublimation(CSS)has been demonstrated as an alternative vacuum deposition technique for fabricating organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs).CSS utilizes a planar donor plate pre-coated with organic thin films as an area source to rapidly transfer the donor film to a device substrate at temperatures below 200℃.CSS is also conformal and capable of depositing on odd-shaped substrates using flexible donor *** evaporation behaviors of organic donor films under CSS were fully characterized using model OLED materials and CSS-deposited films exhibited comparable device performances in an OLED stack to films deposited by conventional point *** low temperature and conformal nature of CSS,along with its high material utilization and short process time,make it a promising method for fabricating flexible OLED displays.

Understanding the regions where proteins bind to peptides is vital for studying diseases like cancer, as it sheds light on various cellular processes and aids in drug discovery. Although researchers can experimentally investigate protein-peptide interactions at the region level by analyzing the structures of their complexes, only a limited number of these structures are known. Additionally, experiments to determine these interactions can be both costly and time-consuming. Computational methods provide an alternative and complementary approach to experimental techniques. As a result, using computational methods to predict peptide-binding regions can significantly enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of experimental research. To leverage these advantages, this study introduces a new method named Structure-based Prediction of Residue-level Interaction of Peptides (SPRINT-Pep), designed to pinpoint the binding regions between proteins and peptides. This approach leverages two distinct predictive models: a classification-based model combining DeepResNet with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) and a segmentation-based model called DeepU-Net. Our predictions outperform other state-of-the-art methods in terms of F-measures (by at least 23%), precision (by at least 3.7%), and the balance between sensitivity and specificity (by about 7.7%). These findings demonstrate the proficiency of the proposed method. © 2025 IEEE.

A new type of error-control code is proposed in which a signal point within the modulator signal constellation diagram is selected as the target signal point. An incoming signal point is then encoded by using the number of steps along a pre-defined path to the target point. By introducing a state variable, trellis based decoding is made possible. The encoding process is generalised for M-ary QAM with high rate encoding to present the BER performance of signal point target codes (SPTCs) over quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM signal constellations. Free Euclidean distance calculations are used to modify the encoding algorithm to develop constellation arithmetic codes (CACs) with an improved coding gain. For example, a rate 2/3 CAC code using partial parallel encoding provides a BER coding gain of 5.5 dB over uncoded 64-QAM. Copyright © 2022 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
