Nano- and microparticles are popular media to enhance optical signals, including fluorescence from a dye proximal to the particle. Here we show that homogeneous, lossless, all-dielectric spheres with diameters in the mesoscale range, between nano- ( 100 nm) and micro- ( 1 µm) scales, can offer surprisingly large fluorescence enhancements, up to F ∼ 104. With the absence of nonradiative Ohmic losses inherent to plasmonic particles, we show that F can increase, decrease or even stay the same with increasing intrinsic quantum yield q0, for suppressed, enhanced or intact radiative decay rates of a fluorophore, respectively. Further, the fluorophore may be located inside or outside the particle, providing additional flexibility and opportunities to design fit for purpose particles. The presented analysis with simple dielectric spheres should spur further interest in this less-explored scale of particles and experimental investigations to realize their potential for applications in imaging, molecular sensing, light coupling, and quantum information processing. © 2023, CC BY.

Performance Optimization for Semantic Communications: An Attention-based Reinforcement Learning Approach

In this paper, a semantic communication framework is proposed for textual data transmission. In the studied model, a base station (BS) extracts the semantic information from textual data, and transmits it to each user. The semantic information is modeled by a knowledge graph (KG) that consists of a set of semantic triples. After receiving the semantic information, each user recovers the original text using a graph-to-text generation model. To measure the performance of the considered semantic communication framework, a metric of semantic similarity (MSS) that jointly captures the semantic accuracy and completeness of the recovered text is proposed. Due to wireless resource limitations, the BS may not be able to transmit the entire semantic information to each user and satisfy the transmission delay constraint. Hence, the BS must select an appropriate resource block for each user as well as determine and transmit part of the semantic information to the users. As such, we formulate an optimization problem whose goal is to maximize the total MSS by jointly optimizing the resource allocation policy and determining the partial semantic information to be transmitted. To solve this problem, a proximal-policy-optimization-based reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm integrated with an attention network is proposed. The proposed algorithm can evaluate the importance of each triple in the semantic information using an attention network and then, build a relationship between the importance distribution of the triples in the semantic information and the total MSS. Compared to traditional RL algorithms, the proposed algorithm can dynamically adjust its learning rate thus ensuring convergence to a locally optimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed framework can reduce by 41.3% data that the BS needs to transmit and improve by two-fold the total MSS compared to a standard communication network without using semantic communication techniques. Iterative Sound Source Localization for Unknown Number of Sources

Sound source localization aims to seek the direction of arrival (DOA) of all sound sources from the observed multichannel audio. For the practical problem of unknown number of sources, existing localization algorithms attempt to predict a likelihood-based coding (i.e., spatial spectrum) and employ a pre-determined threshold to detect the source number and corresponding DOA value. However, these threshold-based algorithms are not stable since they are limited by the careful choice of threshold. To address this problem, we propose an iterative sound source localization approach called ISSL, which can iteratively extract each source's DOA without threshold until the termination criterion is met. Unlike threshold-based algorithms, ISSL designs an active source detector network based on binary classifier to accept residual spatial spectrum and decide whether to stop the iteration. By doing so, our ISSL can deal with an arbitrary number of sources, even more than the number of sources seen during the training stage. The experimental results show that our ISSL achieves significant performance improvements in both DOA estimation and source number detection compared with the existing threshold-based algorithms. The fifth-generation (5G) communication system not only demands compact designs but also calls for innovative beam-steering approaches. The Rotman lens is one of the beam steering devices that can be used for such applications. However, it demands a considerable amount of real estate to accommodate transmission lines attached to its beam, dummy, and array ports. These tapered transmission lines act as impedance transformers and the entire performance of the lens degrades significantly unless these lines are properly designed. In this work, we show how to use Klopfenstein taper lines to design the Rotman lens. The lens designed in this manner not only has small footprints but the design methodology also paves the way for software design to automate the design of such lenses.

The growth of the popularization of blockchain technology has caused new concepts to emerge. Non-Fungible Token (NFT) is one of these concepts introduced based on blockchain technology in 2017. As newly-emerged concepts, NFTs have rapidly become a popular technology in industry and academic research. NFTs currently have various applications in the industry, which are reviewed in the present study. They have also attracted a broad spectrum of research. Metaverse is another exciting blockchain-based technology that enables people to connect with digital avatars in a virtual universe. The importance of this study is to identify new applications of NFTs in the Metaverse making NFTs more applicable. Assisting with identity management and ownership right of digital assets are examples of NFT applications in the Metaverse that are explained in this study in detail. Ultimately, this study presents some future directions of NFT applications in industry and academic research.

Data integrity becomes paramount as the number of Internet of Things (ioT) sensor deployments increases. Sensor data can be altered by benign causes or malicious actions. Mechanisms that detect drifts and irregularities can prevent disruptions and data bias in the state of an IoT application. This paper presents LE3D, an ensemble framework of data drift estimators capable of detecting abnormal sensor behaviours. Working collaboratively with surrounding ioT devices, the type of drift (natural/abnormal) can also be identified and reported to the end-user. The proposed framework is a lightweight and unsupervised implementation able to run on resource-constrained IoT devices. Our framework is also generalisable, adapting to new sensor streams and environments with minimal online reconfiguration. We compare our method against state-of-the-art ensemble data drift detection frameworks, evaluating both the real-world detection accuracy as well as the resource utilisation of the implementation. Experimenting with real-world data and emulated drifts, we show the effectiveness of our method, which achieves up to 97% of detection accuracy while requiring minimal resources to run.

The measurement of the optical transmission matrix(TM)of an opaque material is an advanced form of space-variant aberration *** imaging,TM-based methods are emerging in a range of fields,including optical communications,micro-manipulation,and *** many cases,the TM is very sensitive to perturbations in the configuration of the scattering medium it ***,applications often require an up-to-the-minute characterisation of the fragile TM,typically entailing hundreds to thousands of probe ***,we explore how these measurement requirements can be relaxed using the framework of compressive sensing,in which the incorporation of prior information enables accurate estimation from fewer measurements than the dimensionality of the TM we aim to *** of such priors include knowledge of a memory effect linking the input and output fields,an approximate model of the optical system,or a recent but degraded TM *** demonstrate this concept by reconstructing the full-size TM of a multimode fibre supporting 754 modes at compression ratios down to∼5%with good *** show that in this case,imaging is still possible using TMs reconstructed at compression ratios down to∼1%(eight probe measurements).This compressive TM sampling strategy is quite general and may be applied to a variety of other scattering samples,including diffusers,thin layers of tissue,fibre optics of any refractive profile,and reflections from opaque *** approaches offer a route towards the measurement of high-dimensional TMs either quickly or with access to limited numbers of measurements.

Epilepsy affect almost 1% of the worldwide population. An early diagnosis of seizure types is a crucial patient-dependent step for the treatment selection process. The selection of the proper treatment relies on the correct identification of the seizure type. As such, identifying the seizure type has the biggest immediate influence on therapy than the seizure detection, reducing the neurologist’s efforts when reading and detecting seizures in EEG recordings. Most of the existing seizure detection and classification methods are conceptualized following the patient-dependent schema thus fail to perform well with unknown cases. Our work focuses on patient-independent schema for seizure type classification and pays more attention to the explainability of the underlying attention mechanism of our method. Using a channel-wise attention mechanism, a quantification of the EEG channels contribution is enabled. Therefore, results become more interpretable and a visualization of brain lobes contribution by seizure types is allowed. We evaluate our model for seizure detection and type classification on CHB-MIT and the recently released TUH EEG Seizure, respectively. Our model is able to classify 8 seizure types with an accuracy of 98.41%, directly from raw EEG data without any preprocessing.
