Particle-based Bayesian inference methods by sampling from a partition-free target (posterior) distribution, e.g., Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD), have attracted significant attention. We propose a path-guided particle-based sampling (PGPS) method based on a novel Log-weighted Shrinkage (LwS) density path linking an initial distribution to the target distribution. We propose to utilize a Neural network to learn a vector field motivated by the Fokker-Planck equation of the designed density path. Particles, initiated from the initial distribution, evolve according to the ordinary differential equation defined by the vector field. The distribution of these particles is guided along a density path from the initial distribution to the target distribution. The proposed LwS density path allows for an efficient search of modes of the target distribution while canonical methods fail. We theoretically analyze the Wasserstein distance of the distribution of the PGPS-generated samples and the target distribution due to approximation and discretization errors. Practically, the proposed PGPS-LwS method demonstrates higher Bayesian inference accuracy and better calibration ability in experiments conducted on both synthetic and real-world Bayesian learning tasks, compared to baselines, such as SVGD and Langevin dynamics, etc. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)

The optical diffraction effect imposes a radical obstacle preventing conventional optical microscopes from achieving an imaging resolution beyond the Abbe diffraction limit and thereby restricting their usage in a multitude of nanoscale *** the past decade,the optical microsphere nanoimaging technique has been demonstrated to be a cost-effective solution for overcoming the diffraction limit and has achieved an imaging resolution of up to about k6k8 in a real-time and label-free manner,making it highly competitive among numerous super-resolution imaging *** this review,we summarize the underlying nano-imaging mechanisms of the microsphere nanoscope and key advancements aimed at imaging performance enhancement:first,to change the working environment or modify the peripheral hardware of a single microsphere nanoscope at the system level;second,to compose the microsphere compound lens;and third,to engineer the geometry or ingredients of *** also analyze challenges yet to be overcome in optical microsphere nano-imaging,followed by an outlook of this technique.

In the era of big data, the escalating volume and velocity of data generation pose significant challenges in data processing. Traditional systems like Spark [1] and Hadoop [2] manage the increasing amount and velocity of data by improving data placement and processing speeds. However, they face inherent limitations due to the essential data movement required for processing. In this paper, we explore the Skyhook framework, a novel extension of the Ceph distributed system, which significantly reduces the need for data movement. We present an extensive case study using the Skyhook framework, applying it with the TPC-H and K-means clustering algorithms. More specifically, we leverage the TPC-H benchmark to distinguish between CPU-intensive and I/O-intensive tasks. We explore the integration of K-means clustering into SQL, coupled with a near-data processing system to offload the computational burden of the K-means clustering algorithm to storage nodes. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of distributed data processing applications across three processing approaches: traditional layout (baseline), optimized layout, and near-data processing. Additionally, we introduce the use of the FIO tool to simulate real-world system workloads, enabling the measurement of performance metrics such as average latency and CPU utilization. Our research is a significant advance in understanding how to optimize data processing systems to meet the demands of the modern data landscape. © 2024 IEEE.

Reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHSs) have been proposed as a cost-effective and power-efficient solution for extremely large-scale arrays, where the amplitude of electromagnetic waves radiated at each element is controlled to achieve high directive gain. However, the complexity of acquiring real-time channel state information (CSI) required for beamforming is prohibitively high, especially when the near-field expansion brought by the large-scale RHS is considered. In this paper, we propose a codebook-based beam training scheme for a large-scale RHS-enabled communication system to bypass CSI estimation. Unlike traditional phase-controlled arrays, the amplitude-controlled property of the RHS implies that each RHS element can be selectively activated. This motivates an array reconfiguration method where a scale-changeable RHS array is constructed to generate gain-flat beams with different coverage in the angle-range domain. A hierarchical RHS codebook is then proposed where the coverage of the codewords in each layer is progressively refined. To address the substantial beam search overhead in the near-far field, a two-stage beam training scheme is performed in the proposed codebook, thereby reducing the overhead to a logarithmic level of the element number. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs better than phased arrays given the same input power in terms of sum rate, and it also approaches the upper bound achieved by the exhaustive search at a significantly reduced overhead. © 2024 IEEE.

In a multi-agent system, agents share their local observations to gain global situational awareness for decision making and collaboration using a message passing system. When to send a message, how to encode a message, and how to leverage the received messages directly affect the effectiveness of the collaboration among agents. When training a multi-agent cooperative game using reinforcement learning (RL), the message passing system needs to be optimized together with the agent policies. This consequently increases the model's complexity and poses significant challenges to the convergence and performance of learning. To address this issue, we propose the Belief-map Assisted Multi-agent System (BAMS), which leverages a neuro-symbolic belief map to enhance training. The belief map decodes the agent's hidden state to provide a symbolic representation of the agent's understanding of the environment and other agents' status. The simplicity of symbolic representation allows the gathering and comparison of the ground truth information with the belief, which provides an additional channel of feedback for the learning. Compared to the sporadic and delayed feedback coming from the reward in RL, the feedback from the belief map is more consistent and reliable. Agents using BAMS can learn a more effective message passing network to better understand each other, resulting in better performance in the game. We evaluate BAMS's performance in a cooperative predator and prey game with varying levels of map complexity and compare it to previous multi-agent message passing models. The simulation results showed that BAMS reduced training epochs by 66%, and agents who apply the BAMS model completed the game with 34.62% fewer steps on average. © 2023 The Authors.

A 1.65 to 1.84 GHz Filtering SPDT Switch With Fully Tunable Insertion Phase Using NRN and Mixed Electromagnetic Coupling Techniques

This brief presents a novel filtering single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) switch with continuously tunable center frequency and insertion phase. It is comprised of six varactor-loaded microstrip resonators and three tunable non-resonating nodes (NRNs) at source and loads. The controllable mixed electromagnetic couplings are introduced on the two main paths of each channel of the switch. At ON-state, the designed filtering switch can generate a 4th-order bandpass filtering performance with high selectivity, and the insertion phase can be continuously tuned with a full 360° tuning range by changing the reactances of NRNs and switching the dominated modes of the mixed couplings. At OFF-state, the mixed electromagnetic couplings are set to zero, and hence high isolation can be realized. To validate the proposed technique, a circuit prototype is designed and fabricated. The measured results suggest that the designed filtering SPDT switch can operate with a tunable center frequency ranging from 1.65 GHz to 1.84 GHz, and its insertion phase at ON-state channel can be continuously tuned from -180° to 180°. During the whole tuning process, the measured in-band isolation for OFF-state channel keeps better than 40 dB. © 2023 IEEE.

Perceived environment and neighbourhood satisfaction: introducing a fuzzy modeling approach

The present study aims at developing the existing methodology to determine the predictors of neighborhood satisfaction under an uncertain environment. To achieve this purpose, required data are gathered from 320 households living in Shiraz, Iran, including their perceptions of neighborhood social characteristics and neighborhood satisfaction through a questionnaire survey. Due to uncertainty among the numeric independent variables, a set of fuzzy estimation systems are developed, each of which predicts the value of neighborhood satisfaction using the values of one specific subset of the influencing independent variables. According to the findings, the environmental characteristics of neighborhood contribute to improving neighborhood satisfaction more effectively than individual attributes of residents. Fuzzy results, also, show that perceived security, social control and trust are important predictors of neighborhood satisfaction among single variables, while the combination of trust and perceived security has the strongest effect among all variables and can determine neighborhood satisfaction with a high accuracy. Parts of the results were consistent with prior research. There are important implications for researchers and policy-makers in the findings. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Opinion target extraction (OTE) or aspect extraction (AE) is a fundamental task in opinion mining that aims to extract the targets (or aspects) on which opinions have been expressed. Recent work focus on cross-domain OTE, which is typically encountered in real-world scenarios, where the testing and training distributions differ. Most methods use domain adversarial neural networks that aim to reduce the domain gap between the labelled source and unlabelled target domains to improve target domain performance. However, this approach only aligns feature distributions and does not account for class-wise feature alignment, leading to suboptimal results. Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has been explored as a solution, but is limited by the quality of pseudo-labels generated by the model. Inspired by the theoretical foundations in domain adaptation [2], we propose a new SSL approach that opts for selecting target samples whose model output from a domain-specific teacher and student network disagree on the unlabelled target data, in an effort to boost the target domain performance. Extensive experiments on benchmark cross-domain OTE datasets show that this approach is effective and performs consistently well in settings with large domain shifts. © 2023 ACM.
