This study introduces an innovative actuator that resembles a motor with a non-uniform permanent magnetic field. We have developed a prototype of the actuator by combining a standard motor, characterized by a uniform magnetic field, with a custom rotary magnetic spring exhibiting a non-uniform magnetic field. We have also presented a systematic computational approach to customize the magnetic field to minimize the energy consumption of the actuator when used for a user-defined oscillatory task. Experiments demonstrate that this optimized actuator significantly lowers energy consumption in a typical oscillatory task, such as pick-and-place or oscillatory limb motion during locomotion, compared to conventional motors. Our findings imply that incorporating task-optimized non-uniform permanent magnetic fields into conventional motors and direct-drive actuators could enhance the energy efficiency of robotic systems.

Modern power grids are fast-changing and thus require real-time monitoring and online stability assessment. With the rapid development of machine learning (ML) techniques, using data-driven models to provide fast and accurate estimations of power system stability marginal information, such as frequency nadir for frequency stability and critical clearing time (CCT) for transient stability, have become possible. However, despite the numerous research on ML-based methods for frequency nadir and CCT prediction, there is limited work on the impact of different network topology changes. Furthermore, most previous studies only focused on small or synthetic systems, and there is a lack of research on actual large power system models. In this paper, the above issues are addressed by studying the actual U.S. Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system model with more than 20,000 buses. Massive simulations are conducted in PowerWorld Simulator to study the impact of various topology change scenarios on both frequency stability and transient stability. System operating information is extracted from the success dispatch cases of various network topologies to generate a comprehensive dataset for ML-based models. Two ML methods, random forest (RF) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network, are trained and tested for both frequency nadir prediction and CCT prediction. Test results have proven the models are capable of online stability assessment for large power networks such as the WECC system with sufficient accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we partly determine the cycle structure of two types of Nonlinear feedback shift registers (NFSRs). Based on these results, the cycle structure of a class of NFSRs with symmetric feedback functions can be completely characterized. Furthermore, an alternative proof of Kjeldsen's results is presented. Compared with the original proof based on abstract algebra theory, ours is straightforward and easy to understand.

This research study addresses the need for renewable energy in residence by discussing the development and building of a solar assisted automation system for homes equipped with a wireless Internet of Things (IoT) enabled technology. The photovoltaic array powers the intelligent home using a highly efficient Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control system. The research's design, analysis, and methodology are all presented here, along with the study's findings on the market. The primary building blocks of a solar UPS are a solar panel and a custom-designed inverter circuit. The inverter circuit was designed in accordance with solar panel specs and requirements. Many other circuits served as inspiration for the present circuit's redesign. The development experts of currently available backup power supplies have also been consulted in order to plan for prospective replacements should a component fail or become unavailable. In this post, we'll look at some of the several ways a solar-powered UPS may be built and how its features might work. This suggests that solar UPSs may soon be able to compete with and even outperform their electrical counterparts. The key components of the design are an outside solar panel equipped with solar cells to convert solar energy towards electrical power and a power conversion circuit to convert the DC current into AC current for usage in household appliances. Two Energy throw electrical parts and one Arduino UNO controller with sensors were used in the development of this prototype automation system. In this paper, we propose developing and implementing a residence energy control system to help individuals and families keep tabs on their energy consumption and adjust their habits accordingly. The purpose of this project is to design, develop, and implement a residential energy optimization system that enables sensing, control, and intelligent algorithms to help clients learn more about and control their consumption of energy. © 2023 IE

Identifying stress is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Current stress-detection methods are relatively slow and subjective and often take place through invasive measurements via medical devices. We instead propose end-to-end, noninvasive detection of stress through video. We incorporate several modalities to perform holistic detection of a user’s stress level. Our framework employs an emotion recognition model to detect expressions through facial recordings. Then, we evaluate a user’s heart rate by amplifying changes in skin coloration through Eulerian Video Magnification. Finally, we analyze differentials in eyebrow and lip movements. We combine these three measurements to output a final stress score per unit of time. Our chosen emotion recognition model achieves an accuracy of 96.46%, and our remote heart rate detection module has a mean absolute error of 5.79 BPM. We provide a web-based application that allows for rapid, contactless stress detection through a webcam. We achieve over 84% accuracy on a dataset of video clips with individuals labeled as undergoing low, moderate, or high-stress levels. All code and data are openly available.

We proposed a new way to represent and reconstruct multidimensional MR images. Specifically, a representation capable of disentangling different types of features in high-dimensional images was learned via training an autoencoder with separated sets of latent spaces for image style transfer, e.g., contrast or geometry transfer. A latent diffusion model was introduced to capture the distributions of the disentangled latents for constrained reconstruction. A new formulation was developed to integrate the pre-learned representation with other complementary constraints for reconstruction from sparse data. We demonstrated the ability of our model to disentangle contrast and geometry features in multicontrast MR images, and its effectiveness in accelerated T1 and T2 mapping. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper deals with the analysis of a discrete-time networked competitive bivirus susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model. More specifically, we suppose that virus 1 and virus 2 are circulating in the population and are in competition with each other. We show that the model is strongly monotone, and that, under certain assumptions, it does not admit any periodic orbit. We identify a sufficient condition for exponential convergence to the disease-free equilibrium (DFE). Assuming only virus 1 (resp. virus 2) is alive, we establish a condition for global asymptotic convergence to the single-virus endemic equilibrium of virus 1 (resp. virus 2) - our proof does not rely on the construction of a Lyapunov function. Assuming both virus 1 and virus 2 are alive, we establish a condition which ensures local exponential convergence to the single-virus equilibrium of virus 1 (resp. virus 2). Finally, we provide a sufficient (resp. necessary) condition for the existence of a coexistence equilibrium.

Contact-free manipulation technology represents a novel approach that offers a fresh possibility for human-machine interaction, aiming to meet the evolving demands of this interface. In this paper, we introduce a contact-free planar display control technique based on imaging. In our research, we employ cameras as sensors and integrate infrared lasers with image processing techniques to detect and localize input signals. By establishing a coordinate mapping relationship between the operational plane and the display plane, we achieved contact-free control over the planar display. Our paper introduces two methods for establishing this coordinate mapping. The first involves constructing mapping functions between the rectified and transformed camera imagery and the display plane, thereby creating a point-to-point correspondence. The second method entails dividing both the camera imagery and the display plane into segments, establishing a one-to-one relationship between regions. We analyze the strengths and limitations of these two approaches. While the former boasts higher theoretical precision, it is more susceptible to equipment factors and exhibits slower response speeds. Conversely, the latter, despite its lower theoretical precision, offers faster response times. Through the setup of an experimental platform, we demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed. © 2024 SPIE.

The cumulative effects of deuteration on the device lifetime of blue OLEDs with emitters based on common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were studied using two anthracene-based host materials. Their deuterated analogues with incremental deuterium substitutions exhibited similar EL efficiencies but progressively prolonged device lifetimes as a function of deuteration. © 2023, John Wiley and Sons Inc.
