The main challenge of facial landmark localization in realworld application is that the large changes of head pose and facial expressions cause substantial image appearance variations. To avoid high dimensional regression in the 3D and 2D facial pose spaces simultaneously, we propose a hierarchical pose regression approach, estimating the head rotation, facial components and landmarks hierarchically. The regression process works in a unified cascaded fern framework. We present generalized gradient boosted ferns (GBFs) for the regression framework, which give better performance than traditional ferns. The framework also achieves real time performance. We verify our method on the latest benchmark datasets. The results show that it outperforms state-of-theart methods in both accuracy and speed. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) are currently on the early stages of production. PHEV interacts with the electric grid to exchange power through a power conditioner unit (PCU). Developing a PHEV PCU is a subject of growing interest in industry and academia. The related standards are currently under development and the required guidelines to design and develop PHEV PCU are not well established. This paper investigates the available standards regarding grounding requirements and the role of galvanic isolation among the concepts affecting the design procedure of onboard PHEV PCUs. Both isolated and non-isolated PCUs are studied in relation to operating conditions, and safety concerns. The high impedance reference grounding method is suggested as a possibility of grounding connection and compared to the direct grounding connection for both isolated and non-isolated PHEV PCUs. © 2013 IEEE.

As the smartphone market grows, tracking a person's own positions become easier and popular. Especially for the bicycling, file based GPS data make it easier to manage and access personal trajectories. In this paper, we propose an effective color coding method for massive bicycle trajectories visualization. The motivation of the method is based on characteristics of the bicycle trajectories which have different spatial aspects compare to the automobiles. The proposed method modifies the color of the line segments based on the direction and flow, and provides visually enhanced trajectories. GPS data collected from Han riverside bicycle tracks were applied to the proposed visualization methods, and shown the potential possibilities for trajectory analysis. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media.

A contents authoring software with device management for interactive shows and performances is proposed. The proposed system allows user to register and to manage various stage-related devices such as lighting system, fog generator, robots or multimedia players. In this paper, we describe software architecture, XML specification for unified protocol description, and user interface of the proposed system. The system can control multiple devices of heterogeneous protocols in timely manner. Once devices are registered, user can browse commands of each device and can organize commands to step-based list according to the performance scenario. Unlike current commercialized products, the system allows to manipulate authored list of commands during the show instantly. The proposed system also supports to control playback of authored commands by sensor inputs so that a player can trigger devices to execute according to events. The contributions of this paper can be summarized to three points;(1) define unified protocol description with XML structures for simplicity (2) give sensor triggering capability to control devices, and (3) implement fast and instant manipulation user interface during the show. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media.

Recently, graphics processing units (GPUs) have opened up new opportunities for speeding up general-purpose parallel applications due to their massive computational power and up to hundreds of thousands of threads enabled by programming models such as CUDA. However, due to the serial nature of existing micro-architecture simulators, these massively parallel architectures and workloads need to be simulated sequentially. As a result, simulating GPGPU architectures with typical benchmarks and input data sets is extremely time-consuming. This paper addresses the GPGPU architecture simulation challenge by generating miniature, yet representative GPGPU kernels. We first summarize the static characteristics of an existing GPGPU kernel in a profile, and analyze its dynamic behavior using the novel concept of the divergence flow statistics graph (DFSG). We subsequently use a GPGPU kernel synthesizing framework to generate a miniature proxy of the original kernel, which can reduce simulation time significantly. The key idea is to reduce the number of simulated instructions by decreasing per-thread iteration counts of loops. Our experimental results show that our approach can accelerate GPGPU architecture simulation by a factor of 88X on average and up to 589X with an average IPC relative error of 5.6%.

Due to their remarkable merits, the soft-switching ac-link universal power converters have received noticeable attention during the last few years. These converters, which can appear as dc-dc, dc-ac, ac-dc, or ac-ac, are compact, reliable, and expected to offer longer life time compared to the other types of converters. However, they require more switches, which make the control process more involved. The sparse ac-link buck-boost converters were proposed to partially solve this problem. The sparse configuration reduces the number of switches from 24 to 20 in a three-phase ac-ac configuration. This paper proposes a modified configuration, which further reduces the number of switches without changing the principles of operation. This converter, which is named Ultra-Sparse ac-Link Buck-Boost converter, reduces the number of switches from 24 to 16, in a three phase ac to ac case, and from 16 to 10, in a dc to three-phase ac configuration. The proposed converter is applicable to systems with unidirectional flow of power, such as PV and wind power generation. Despite reducing the number of switches, the partial resonance time, during which no power is transferred, is as short as the original configuration. The proposed converter is expected to offer higher reliability compared to the original converter;and higher reliability and efficiency compared to the sparse configuration. Another important feature of this configuration is that it can be fabricated by IGBT modules, which are more compact and more cost-effective compared to the discrete devices. This paper presents the principles of the operation of this configuration, and compares the efficiency, the failure rate and the current rating of the switches in the ultra-sparse, sparse and original configurations. Moreover, it evaluates the performance of the proposed converter through simulation and experiment.

This paper proposes a novel bi-directional inverter, named series ac-link inverter. This three-phase inverter belongs to a new class of partial resonant ac-link converters in which the link is formed by a series ac inductor/capacitor (LC) pair having low reactive ratings. The input and output of this converter can be either dc, ac, single-phase, or multi-phase. Therefore, they can appear as dc-dc, dc-ac, ac-dc, and ac-ac configurations. In all of these configurations the ac capacitor is the main energy storage element, and the inductor is merely added to facilitate the zero current turn-off of the switches and their soft turn-on. Due to zero current turn-off of the switches in the proposed converter, the use of SCRs with natural commutation is possible as well. Since the current and voltage of the link are both alternating, no bulky dc electrolytic capacitors are required in this converter. This paper mainly focuses on bidirectional dc to three-phase ac conversion. This single-stage inverter can step-up or step down the voltage in a wide range. If galvanic isolation is required a single-phase high-frequency transformer can be added to the link. In the proposed inverter the power can flow in both directions and therefore, it is an excellent candidate for battery-utility interface and electric vehicle applications. In this paper the principles of the operation of the proposed inverter along with its design and analysis is studied. Moreover, the performance of the proposed configuration is evaluated in this paper. Both simulation and experimental results are included in this paper.
