Recently, graphics processing units (GPUs) have opened up new opportunities for speeding up general-purpose parallel applications due to their massive computational power and up to hundreds of thousands of threads enabled by programming models such as CUDA. However, due to the serial nature of existing micro-architecture simulators, these massively parallel architectures and workloads need to be simulated sequentially. As a result, simulating GPGPU architectures with typical benchmarks and input data sets is extremely time-consuming. This paper addresses the GPGPU architecture simulation challenge by generating miniature, yet representative GPGPU kernels. We first summarize the static characteristics of an existing GPGPU kernel in a profile, and analyze its dynamic behavior using the novel concept of the divergence flow statistics graph (DFSG). We subsequently use a GPGPU kernel synthesizing framework to generate a miniature proxy of the original kernel, which can reduce simulation time significantly. The key idea is to reduce the number of simulated instructions by decreasing per-thread iteration counts of loops. Our experimental results show that our approach can accelerate GPGPU architecture simulation by a factor of 88X on average and up to 589X with an average IPC relative error of 5.6%.

Over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) systems provide wide-area surveillance capabilities to detect and track targets far beyond the range of conventional line-of-sight radars. Because of the narrowband waveforms, OTHR systems do not achieve reliable altitude estimation. In this paper, we develop a new technique to track the instantaneous altitude of maneuvering targets by exploiting the estimated multi-component Doppler signatures. The main contribution of this paper is to apply effective non-stationary signal analysis for estimating the time-varying Doppler signature of each individual multipath, which is then applied to an extended Kalman filter to reliably track the instantaneous target altitude.

Signatures of dynamic screening in interfacial thermal transport of graphene

The interaction between graphene and various substrates plays an important and limiting role on the behavior of graphene films and devices. Here we uncover that dynamic screening of so-called remote substrate phonons (RPs) has a significant effect on the thermal coupling at the graphene-substrate interface. We calculate the thermal conductance hRP between graphene electrons and substrate, and its dependence on carrier density and temperature for SiO2, HfO2, h-BN, and Al2O3 substrates. The dynamic screening of RPs leads to one order of magnitude or more decrease in hRP and a change in its dependence on carrier density. Dynamic screening predicts a decrease of ∼1 MW K−1 m−2 while static screening predicts a rise of ∼10 MW K−1 m−2 when the carrier density in Al2O3-supported graphene is increased from 1012 to 1013 cm−2.

Nowadays, many users are spending their time with enjoying multimedia, and this trend spreads rapidly according to the propagation of smartphones. Multimedia services have tried to attach tag for information of merchandizes related to multimedia, so the multimedia consumers can get detail of those merchandizes, such as price or purchasing information, using attached tag. However, multimedia provider can provide only limited tags while they even cannot support real-time video. In this situation, Multimedia Matching as a Service (MaaS) system is conceptually suggested to let the consumers find items as their preference on real-time video. This system extracts images from video stream, and finds various objects from those images. © 2012 AICIT.

A grid-tied multi-string PV inverter with a high-frequency ac (HFAC) link and soft switching operation is introduced. This single-stage topology can handle an arbitrary number of PV strings with different electrical parameters, locations, and orientations. Using a dedicated maximum power point tracker for each PV string, this inverter can harvest the highest possible power from each string independently, even though they might be at dissimilar irradiance levels and operating temperatures. The HFAC link is formed by an ac inductor and small ac capacitor without the use of bulky short-life electrolytic capacitors. The link is responsible for transferring the PV strings' power to the grid along with creating zero-voltage switching for the power devices. Therefore, the converter is expected to have high power density, high reliability, as well as high efficiency. If galvanic isolation is desired, a small-sized HF transformer can be easily employed in the HF link. After describing the control scheme and operating algorithm of the proposed multi-string inverter, a detailed analysis is carried out. Experimental results are also given to prove the effectiveness of the proposed PV topology.

In this paper, efficiency analysis and design of contactless electric energy transmission systems using inductive method are elaborated. Large leakage inductances of the systems are to be compensated to achieve resonance conditions for maximum efficiency in energy transfer from a launch side to a receiving side where compensating circuits are utilized in both sides. Considering the circuit models of a contactless electrical energy transmission system, the effects of different system parameters including the compensating capacitors are analyzed for a specified frequency range and coupling factor. An algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal compensating capacitors and system resonance frequency to achieve high efficiency. © 2012 IEEE.

The spatial uncertainties of atom force microscopy (AFM) tip position hinder the AFM based nano-manipulation. Although the landmark based tip localization can be applied to improve the tip position accuracy in the task space, the PZT nonlinearity and system drift are still a challenge to compensation performance when the tip is positioned far from the landmark. Therefore this paper proposes an active landmark configuration. This method first estimates the nearby area called as the landmark domain around the target position, and then actively manipulates the landmark into the landmark domain by using virtual hand to improve the positioning accuracy. Simulation and experiment illustrate the validity of the proposed method.

Scalar field mapping has many applications including environmental monitoring, search and rescue, etc. In such applications there is a need to achieve a certain level of confidence regarding the estimates at each location. In this paper, a cooperative and active sensing framework is developed to enable scalar field mapping using multiple mobile sensor nodes. The cooperative and active controller is designed via the real-time feedback of the sensing performance to steer the mobile sensors to new locations in order to improve the sensing quality. During the movement of the mobile sensors, the measurements from each sensor node and its neighbors are taken and fused with the corresponding confidences using distributed consensus filters. As a result an online map of the scalar field is built with a certain level of confidence of the estimates. We conducted computer simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed algorithms
