Over the past few decades, the use of drones for applications such as defense, reconnaissance, agriculture, law enforcement, and others has dramatically increased. Although drones are useful for these applications, they can also be utilized to perform malicious activities, thus compromising the safety and integrity of physical infrastructures. To address this issue, various techniques have been developed to detect and identify drones, including radar, visual analysis, and radio-frequency signal processing. Furthermore, deep learning algorithms based on the recognition of acoustic drone features have been proposed to automate the detection process and overcome the current limitations in modern drone detection systems. This paper presents an auditory drone detection and identification system based on the sparse, event-driven communication nature of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). We investigate the use of a spiking reservoir computing model, known as a Liquid State Machine (LSM), that offers a computationally light alternative to the deep learning approaches of previous works. The LSM based auditory drone detection and identification system is demonstrated on a publicly available acoustic drone dataset, achieving an accuracy of 97.13% and 93.25% on the detection and identification tasks, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first spike-based implementation of an auditory drone recognition system. Moreover, this paper highlights the potential for low size, weight, and power neuromorphic hardware deployment for drone applications that may be limited to energy-constrained environments. © 2022 IEEE.

Amorphous multi-element materials offer unprecedented tunability in composition and properties, yet their rational design remains challenging due to the lack of predictive structure-property relationships and the vast configurational space. Traditional modeling struggles to capture the intricate short-range order that dictates their stability and functionality. We here introduce ApolloX, a pioneering predictive framework for amorphous multi-element materials, establishing a new paradigm by integrating physics-informed generative modeling with particle swarm optimization, using chemical short-range order as an explicit constraint. By systematically navigating the disordered energy landscape, ApolloX enables the targeted design of thermodynamically stable amorphous configurations. It accurately predicts atomic-scale arrangements, including composition-driven metal clustering and amorphization trends, which are well-validated by experiments, while also guiding synthesis by leveraging sluggish diffusion to control elemental distribution and disorder. The resulting structural evolution, governed by composition, directly impacts catalytic performance, leading to improved activity and stability with increasing amorphization. This predictive-experimental synergy transforms the discovery of amorphous materials, unlocking new frontiers in catalysis, energy storage, and functional disordered systems. Smart windows are attractive because of their numerous advantages such as elegance in construction design and energy conservation. Smart windows with variable transmission are especially desirable for obvious reasons. The simplest way to make a variable transmission smart window is to use two patterned polarizers, and control the transmission by changing the relative position of the two polarizers. We have demonstrated a high-dichroic-ratio polarizer by photoalignment and proposed a simple one-step photo-copy method to realize a continuous axis varying polarizer. The patterned polarizer shows high optical performance, and its thickness is as thin as 100 nm, which is favorable in practical window applications. © 2018, Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Ultra-thin broadband polarizers with high performance are urgently demanded as the prosperous development of ultra-thin and flexible displays. We have realized high-dichroic-ratio AD-1 polarizers by the photoalignment technique, and its functional band is in the blue region. To obtain a broadband polarizer in the whole visible region, a simple additional iodine doping process is investigated. We also compare the final broadband polarizers by doping the iodine in both the atmosphere and vacuum. Moreover, by in situ exposure of polarized light during the doping process, the maximum dichroic ratio is improved to 29, which is satisfactory for the ultra-thin and flexible OLED displays. Therefore, a simple and economical technique is offered to realize advanced displays with low cost, ultra-thin profile, flexible style, and high performance. © 2018 SID.

A dichroic polarizer with a high dichroic ratio of up to 60 is achieved by photoalignment induced anisotropic azo dye ordering. The film thickness is well controlled in 200 nm, and it is 500 times thinner than a conventional iodine Polaroid polarizer, which is desirable for ultra-thin high performance liquid crystal display applications. © 2016, Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Most of today's intelligent video surveillance systems are based on Linux core and rely on the kernel's socket mechanism for data transportation. In this paper, we propose APRO, a novel framework with optimized zero-copy capability customized for video surveillance networks. Without the help of special hardware support such as RNIC or NetFPGA, the software-based APRO can effectively reduce the CPU overhead and decrease the transmission latency, both of which are much appreciated for resource-limited video surveillance networks. Furthermore, unlike other software-based zero-copy mechanisms, in APRO zero-copied data from network packets are already reassembled and page aligned for user-spac applications to utilize, which makes it a 'true' zero-copy solution for localhost applications. The proposed mechanism is compared with standard TCP and netmap, a typical zero-copy framework. Simulation results show that APRO outperforms both TCP and localhost optimized netmap implementation with the smallest transmission delay and lowest CPU consumption. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

It is crucial for real-time embedded system to design and verify for a little fault may lead to a catastrophe. Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) is a modeling language used to design and analysis the architecture of real-time embedded system based on Model Driven Architecture (MDA). Code generation of AADL model to codes running on the Real-time Operation System can avoid hand-writing mistakes and improve the efficiency of development. Partitioning is introduced into embedded system to control fault transmission. This paper presents a mapping approach to generate codes from AADL model for partitioned system, and the generated codes which include configuration codes and C codes will run on a partitioned platform. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

We propose a new random beamforming technique in forward link multiuser MIMO systems that exploits efficient multiuser diversity and spatial multiplexing gain. The common channels are allocated to more than one user simultaneously and multiple antennas at the receivers are used for interference nulling, resulting in higher throughput and reduced average waiting time. We show that the throughput of the proposed scheme outperforms the upper bound of the conventional scheme. © 2005 IEEE.

Creating descriptors for trajectories has many applications in robotics/human motion analysis and video copy detection. Here, we propose a novel descriptor for 2D trajectories: Histogram of Oriented Displacements (HOD). Each displacement in the trajectory votes with its length in a histogram of orientation angles. 3D trajectories are described by the HOD of their three projections. We use HOD to describe the 3D trajectories of body joints to recognize human actions, which is a challenging machine vision task, with applications in human-robot/machine interaction, interactive entertainment, multimedia information retrieval, and surveillance. The descriptor is fixed-length, scale-invariant and speed-invariant. Experiments on MSR-Action3D and HDM05 datasets show that the descriptor outperforms the state-of-the-art when using off-the-shelf classification tools.

This paper reports a facile, high-resolution, and cleanroom-free technique to fabricate grooved microneedles for ISF sampling using capillary action. A master mold for grooved MN array with high aspect ratio is fabricated using two photon polymerization based 3D printer. Biocompatible photo-curable resin is casted into molds to realize microneedles;molding makes this approach scalable for large volume production. A sodium polyacrylate-based bead is placed on the distal end of the grooved microchannels as an absorbent to sustain interstitial fluid (ISF) sampling. The ISF is easily recovered from the swollen sodium polyacrylate beads for further analysis. The MNs' continuous fluid extraction has been successfully tested and validated in the lab. © 2022 MicroTAS 2022 - 26th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences.
